Cottage on the Farm

Welcome to The Cottage on the Farm. Our Cottage is a split of our 320 year old Farmhouse with two private entrances for guests to use.

The Cottage is set over two floors comprising of a living room with decorative sandstone fireplace and kitchen downstairs. The staircase leads up to the bedroom with a double bed and small single bed creating an open plan family room with en suite.

Outside in the garden guests have the choice of two private seating area's to choose from.

please note that all dogs must be payed for upon booking and are not to be left unattended in the cottage or garden at anytime.

Amenities: Gas central heating. Electric oven and hob, washing machine, microwave, Airfryer, fridge freezer, TV with Freeview and built in dvd player, selection of books and dvds. Bed linen and towels included in your stay. Ample private parking. country cottage garden, including garden furniture and BBQ. Sorry, no smoking inside the cottage. Local shop 1.5 miles, real ale pub 1 mile.

The Cottage does contain traditional low beams (duck or grouse) and some small steps.

This is a working farm so machinery may be in use during your stay.

Region: Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water Lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.

Village: Situated a short 5 minute drive or a 25 minute walk downhill is the attractive village of Bassenthwaite. This charming settlement retains its traditional rural feel and boasts a stream which winds through the outskirts of the village in addition to whitewashed Lakeland cottages, a well-maintained green and a real ale inn, full of character. Bassenthwaite Lake offers rolling hillside scenery and remains one of the most picturesque places in England.

Mirehouse - Historic house and gardens set on the Lake shore.
The Lake District Wildlife Park.
The Lakes Distillery producing its own famous local gin and whisky.
Dodd Wood.

Most of the attractions of the wider region are within easy driving distance whilst the quieter Northern Fells are right on your doorstep.

The towns of Cockermouth and Keswick are close by and both host weekly markets and a good range of other amenities.

Lovely well equipped cottage situated in a picturesque area. Great base for walks and visiting local lakes & Keswick. Matt our host was very welcoming and we enjoyed being able to wander around his farm. Really enjoyed our stay!

Amazing views and excellent walks on the doorstep. Garden has the most amazing seating area to watch the sunset in the evening. BBQ also a welcome addition. Cottage clean and well equipped. Excellent base for exploring the lakes.

Brilliant short stay

Matthew's place was ideal for my husband and our lads who stayed for two nights to extend a holiday. It's a lovely place off the beaten track and Matthew is very helpful and accommodating.

We loved this cottage on the farm. It's right at the foot of Skiddaw and already at 700ft. The views are stunning and we loved being able to explore on foot direct from the cottage. It is generally well equipped (maybe a bit more crockery, cutlery and serving dishes and spoons would be handy). The outdoor areas are very good, designed to catch the sun at various points and in a beautiful well-maintained little cottage garden. Would def recommend. Low ceiling beam in the kitchen will catch anyone over approx 5ft 8".

Wunderbarer 2 wöchiger Aufenthalt auf der Schaffarm von Matthew - 2 wonderful weeks

Wir waren 2 Wochen auf der abgelegenen Farm und haben die Ruhe sehr genossen. Man hört natürlich gelegentlich die Schafe. Das Haus bietet ausreichend Platz und ist liebevoll eingerichtet. Der Garten ist wunderschön. Bis nach Keswick fährt man ca. 15 Minuten mit dem Auto. Matthew, der Gastgeber ist sehr freundlich. We spent 2 weeks on the outlying farm and really enjoyed the peace and quiet. Of course you can hear the sheep occasionally. The house offers plenty of space and is lovingly furnished. The garden is beautiful. Keswick is about 15 minutes away by car. Matthew, the host, is very friendly.

If you are looking for a quiet and out of the way place to stay then this is definitely it! Part of the old farm house I guess, the cottage is very well appointed even to an air fryer. There is also a lovely garden. Thoroughly enjoyed our short stay, hopefully longer next time, we will return…..

Great Location for Hill walking

My son and I walked locally on the night we arrived but ventured further the next day to climb Helvellyn. We live in the States now, and had too return but we miss the Lakes!

Beautiful location & cottage

Everything as described. Cottage was perfect, extremely cosy and peaceful. Well equipped in side which suited our short break perfectly. Matt the host was very welcoming and available if you would need anything. For sure we will be returning.

Lovely rural setting

Very authentic farm experience. We were lucky to visit during lambing. The Cottage is very cosy comfortable and clean. Matt was the perfect host.

Winter break at farm

If you like rural and isolated this is for you it's out the way but still close to the towns plenty of walks the property had wonderful views dogs are welcome the owner was so nice would recommend

Liked: location, communication about the check in process, cottage is clean and nicely furnished - Christmas decorations were a lovely touch. Disliked: dogs barking next door most of the evening of our second night, only one loo roll for a 3 day stay!

Lovely cottage

The cottage is very attractive - it is cosy, spacious and welcoming. The views from the cottage are also stunning. There's plenty of scenic areas nearby the cottage that are great to discover and walk around. It's also an ideal base for visits to the numerous towns and attractions within the Lakes. The hosts are friendly and helpful as well.

On the trail to lake views

It really IS a working farm with real hard working people there who care.Matthew recieved some pygmy goats while we were there and it was fun to see them. The place was thoughtfully decorated and spacious. If you are very tall you need to be carefull here. It is in an old stone structure that has some recent modern upgrades. Very warm and cozy. A 5 minute walk from the front door gets you a million dollar view. TONs of great hiking and mountain biking options nearby. We would gladly stay here again. ssdfsdf

Explore the Lake District

Great accommodations for exploring the Lake District and observing life on a working sheep farm. Efficient kitchen setup, great views from the bedroom and the side yard. Would stay here again.

Such a stunning property hidden away below the mountains in the Lakes. We didn’t want to come home! We genuinely had the best stay. We will be back.
