This house was perfect for our family reunion, which consisted of 3 couples and 3 singles. The house is large with lots of little sitting areas. So if someone goes to bed early, or wakes up early, there are rooms you can use without disturbing the sleeping. The kitchen and dining room are large. The dining room table seats 10 which worked for my family, although a few of the chairs were really wobbly. If you have larger group you could sit out on the porch (assuming it's not too cold), or bring one of the many tables into the dining room. I think the porch had 5-6 large circular tables, each fitting 8 or so. So there's plenty of table space. The porch is enclosed although not climate controlled, and it smells a bit musty.
Each of the bedrooms was charming and offered good views. I enjoyed my bed, but some of my siblings complained of unevenness. Each bedroom had a bathroom. The four nicest ones had en suites; the fifth one by the kitchen had closeby, but you had to travel a short distance through a kitchen and laundry area. There's another bathroom by the front door, but we avoided it since it would run non-stop after you flushed it.
This house is remote. Jamestown is kind of right across the river, but in order to get there you have to drive about 20 minutes and then catch a (free) ferry, which runs every half hour. (In summer, it's every 15 minutes.) There's a bridge further south which you would take if going down toward Norfolk. There's very little in the way of shopping or take out on the west side of the James River, where the house is placed.
What was provided in the pantry was hit or miss. We didn't see things like salt, laundry detergent, trash bags (found those the last day), coffee filters. So if you are coming here, be prepared to bring things you might need, or call the office first to see what they have.
The house had a lot of rules, noting that they are a Christian organization. I get the no smoking, no drug thing ... but no alcohol? Mind you, I'm not a drinker, but some people enjoy a glass of wine with dinner. I missed the warning in the listing and some family members were put off by it. Just be aware.
The lock box is hard to open. I had to call the office to learn the trick. Many of my family members struggled with that.
The place could use some maintenance. I hope those things get addressed off season.
