Casa Isobel is a true gem, if you don’t mind putting in a bit of work. The house is located about three quarters of the way up the seaward side of the old town of Mojacar. As such, it requires quite a bit of stair climbing to get up to it from the lower portion of the pueblo. However, once you are at the house, the stores, bars, and restaurants (and buses) are located just a short walk down one of the many beautiful narrow streets of the village with minimal climbing. There are some good restaurants to be found nearby, and while we were there, a new bar opened just around the corner that has on Friday and Saturday nights some of the finest quality flamenco that we have seen anywhere. The house is located down a very private side passageway, which puts it out of the main flow of foot and vehicle traffic; however, entering the house requires navigating a fairly treacherous stairwell. The interior of the house shows some wear-and-tear and the kitchen has only a stove top (no oven) which can create some challenges for cooking (we purchased a toaster oven to use during our 4-month stay); but in spite of all of this, the living space is very comfortable and very quiet. What makes this place truly exceptional, however, is a nice-sized south-facing terrace off of the living room. This terrace has one of the most spectacular views I have ever seen in any of the homes or hotels we’ve stayed at. To the right you overlook the portion of the pueblo blanco that runs up the canyon, and in front of the terrace across the canyon you can see the surrounding mountains with limestone caves that serve as nesting sites for the numerous swallows that take to the skies in the evenings. To the left side of the terrace, you look down over the gardens and stone walls to a gorgeous view of the Mediterranean Sea. My wife and I spent many mornings having breakfast on the terrace watching the sail boats and picking out the white caps created as schools of dolphins swam by. Finally, Chris was easy to work with and very engaged during our stay with many suggestions for things to see and do.
