Bleak House A Landmark of Mudgee Heritage
Step into a living chapter of Australian history at Bleak House, where 1860s architecture blends timeless character with modern comfort. Framed by a wide veranda, flourishing gardens, and a grand stone fountain, this award-winning home stands as one of Mudgee’s oldest, carrying forward the legacy of the town’s early settlers. Perfectly positioned in the heart of town and a scenic drive from acclaimed wineries, it’s an inviting base to experience Mudgee’s rich heritage and regional beauty.
Bleak House is one of Mudgee’s oldest and grandest residences, now beautifully reimagined as a refined historic retreat. Featured in Sydney Home Design & Living and The Mudgee Guardian, and winner of the 2025 Master Builders Award for Best Historical House Restoration, this landmark offers a rare chance to experience a piece of enduring history.
You’re welcomed by a striking double-storey façade adorned with ornate ironwork and framed by landscaped gardens. Through the etched-glass front door lies a grand entrance hall, where checkerboard marble floors, soaring ceilings, and a sparkling chandelier set the tone for the elegance within.
The living room exudes old-world grandeur with navy panelled walls, antique-style portraits, a statement chandelier, velvet seating, a TV, and a fireplace — perfect for curling up with a novel or sharing a bottle of local Shiraz. The designer kitchen invites relaxed cooking with a generous island and modern appliances, while a walk-in pantry with timber shelving and a rolling ladder keeps everything within reach. A concealed coffee station delivers barista-style brews at home, and nearby, the dining area features a long table in an inviting setting designed for lingering meals.
Five beautifully appointed bedrooms are spread across both levels — two with king beds, three with queens — each featuring decorative fireplaces, crisp linens, and heritage-inspired styling. Two include private ensuites, one featuring a freestanding bath with treetop views. Additional bathrooms continue the timeless design with floating vanities and rainfall showers. Tucked behind cabinetry in one of the bathrooms, the laundry nook features a washer and dryer for longer stays.
Outdoors, immerse yourself in the romance of the countryside. Start your mornings with coffee on the sun-drenched deck, linger over tea on the wraparound veranda, or wander through the garden, where roses, lavender, and cottage flowers bloom beneath mature trees, and the gentle trickle of a stone fountain sets a peaceful tone. The BBQ is ready for grilling, with multiple outdoor settings designed for alfresco dining under the stars.
Enjoy year-round comfort with central heating and cooling, as well as both wood and electric fireplaces. Secure, automated gates with generous parking for up to seven cars across the carport and driveway. A separate on-site granny flat remains unoccupied and not accessible to guests. Children are welcome but must be supervised at all times, as the heritage-listed home has original low balustrades and an unfenced front fountain.

During your stay, you and your group will have the entire house to yourselves. Please make yourselves at home! Please note: there is a granny flat on the property; however, it is not accessible to guests.
Located just a short walk from Mudgee’s historic town centre, Bleak House offers easy access to some of the region’s finest food, wine, and cultural experiences. Seven minutes from your stay, Church Street buzzes with cafés, boutiques, and local favourites like Dancing Goat, Lawson Park Hotel, and Mudgee Brewing Co. Stop in at Outside the Square for coffee or pick up essentials at Coles. Within six minutes on foot, enjoy tastings at Three Tails Brewery or live music and wine at Roth’s Wine Bar + Cellar. A 12-minute walk leads to Robertson Park, home to Mudgee’s beloved monthly markets. Just a 10-minute drive opens up standout cellar doors like The Cellar by Gilbert, Burrundulla Wines, First Ridge Wines, and Bunnamagoo Estate. Fine dining destinations such as The Zin House, Pipeclay Pumphouse, and The Barn at Blue Wren are within a 11-minute drive from your stay.
