Sound front Sunsets from Dock, Pool, Porch & all rooms. Private Beach access!

Surround Sound is the only name that makes sense once you walk in the front door of this unique home. We have sound and canal views from every room. A highlight is watching the dazzling sunset while crabbing and fishing from the 100 ft. private dock. Or watching the sun or a full moon reflect off of the water like diamonds from the comfort of bed or the couch! Custom pool (closed from November to May) and swim spa (heated at your request for a heat fee typically 4-5 hours a day available rear round). We even have 2 rentable single person kayaks and life vest! This wooded, waterfront, private home is a 20 minute peaceful walk to the OBX beaches. We have a parking permit to the "homeowner's only" beach access with bathrooms and showers (7 min drive).

If the beach and the sound are not enough, we are a bike ride or 5 minute car ride to Duck's boardwalk shopping, restaurants, concerts and other activities. My kids love to bike for a snow cone or Duck Donuts. The area is bike friendly with paved sidewalks. We have 2 bikes for your use. Additionally, any golfers can enjoy Duck Woods Country Club which is just down Dogwood Lane.

Inside of the home we have 3 large bedrooms and 2.5 baths. The "boat house" sits on the canal-side of the house with an additional bedroom, full bath and medium pool table. This is detached from the main house and is a favorite spot for teens or light sleepers! At night, enjoy the sound of the waves crashing ashore from the beach and the owls chatting from tree to tree.

Our family of 4 had a great stay here over Memorial Day weekend. Our kids loved fishing off the dock, the pool & hot tub were great and the screened in porch was an excellent place to hang out during a couple of rain showers. Great quiet location in a neighborhood.

Surround Sound was the perfect setting for our anniversary getaway and our dogs first trip to the beach. The home had everything we needed and more to enjoy fabulous views, beautiful pool / spa, an incredibly relaxing screened in porch to enjoy the sunsets, along with dinners on the porch including a lot of blue crabs we caught right from the dock! Tara was the perfect host, keeping us updated, answering questions and providing a home beautifully decorated with privacy to enjoy nature, fishing, swimming and relaxing. The sunsets were amazing and our dog loved walking the property where we saw osprey, deer, rabbits and blue heron each day. Driving to the parking area for private beach access worked perfectly for morning walks on the beach, then going to Duck to walk the boardwalk for shopping and dining out. Having supplies provided for the beach, fishing, swimming and biking made it easy to enjoy the area, but we spent most of our time enjoying the home, screened porch, dock and pool. Thank you Tara for even leaving a dog toy! We so enjoyed our getaway, didn't want to leave, but look forward to returning in the future.

The BEST house we have rented in 30 years going to Duck! Does not feel like a rental - it feels like a comfortable home you could stay at forever. Tara has provided everything you need to make it very livable - from linens, beach towels and chairs, to bikes and lawn games, even paper products and toiletries! The layout is so practical and inviting. Fantastic views of the water, a first floor en-suite, perfect for our 80 year old parents, and a separate bed/bath above the garage which offered valuable privacy for our daughter and son-in-law. The best part though is the huge screen porch! It stays shaded all day but is right next to the pool deck so you can stay out of the sun and still be a part of all the action around the pool. The back yard is very private with an amazing pool and tons of chairs and floats. The spa felt great in the evenings and easily fit all 8 of us. Gorgeous sunset views from the dock, as well as an easy launch spot for kayaking. The house is in a very peaceful neighborhood only a short mile to private beach access with parking, or 3 miles to downtown Duck. Also super easy to enter/exit island or head south to other beaches or shopping without ever having to get on Rt 12 - which is a huge plus on check-in/check-out days! Tara was a fantastic host and was responsive to all my questions before and during our stay. When I messaged her about one very minor maintenance item, she had someone there to fix it within hours! Five stars all around!!

This was my family's first time staying on the sound side. We all agreed that it was beautiful and relaxing.Access to the beach was easy and not crowded. Teens enjoyed riding the bikes in the neighborhood.Definitely would recommend staying at this lovely house.

Vacation Paradise

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our week at this beautiful home on the water. It was so nice that we never wanted to leave to do any other activities around the Outer Banks! Tara was a wonderful host and very responsive to any questions we had.

Lovely property ... especially the screened-in wrap around porch and the pool/spa! Unfortunately, the extreme heat didn't allow us to enjoy all the amenities.The only problem we had was with the ice maker, but Tara was quick to respond to try and remedy the problem.Would definitely rent again.

Great Family Trip

Location of property was wonderful. Close to everything we wanted to do. Pool was a refreshing addition. Enjoyed kayaking and day trips to beach. Only thing I would change is WiFi - boat house connection very faint and would go in and out.

Amazing Sound Views

Awesome house, very well furnished and conveniently located with multiple different ways to get to the property in case the roads are busy... The dock was great and views of the Sound from there were simply fabulous... it is a short drive to the beach and Duck town... The host is very accessible and great communicator.... highly recommended for a family trip!

August week in Southern Shores

What a beautiful, uniquely situated home! Trees on either side bordering the creek near the sound. Our favorite spot was the incredible screened in porch enjoying river otters, ospreys, cranes, deer, and jumping fish! Very comfortable for movement challenged adult with a main bedroom suite downstairs.

Looks like you only missed out on dolphin. When we purchased the house it had a strange 3 level uncovered deck. I had a vision from the start of a covered porch overlooking all nature has to offer. Then I discovered invisible screen with no seems! The porch is now the hotspot for all guest! So glad my vision can be shared!

The listing and pictures don't do it justice

This property is absolutely incredible. We've been going to OBX for a few years now and we've never stayed on the bay side, the location was amazing letting us get away from some of the ocean side hustle and bustle. The house was right on the bay with a beautiful pool and hot tub that provided our kids with endless fun for our trip. The highlight for me though was the covered (and screened) porch in the back. It's beautiful in the morning and evenings and stays cool and shaded in the afternoons. We loved this place and will be back!

That is my favorite spot too! When I designed the covered and screened back porch, the architect and builder kept questioning why I wanted so much shaded, bug free and cool space. That is why! It is just perfect! Please come again!

Vacation Paradise

Surround Sound has become our family's favorite vacation spot. It is a beautiful home surrounded by water and we instantly feel relaxed. We especially enjoy our evenings on the screened porch watching the sun set over the sound. During the day, we enjoy the wonderful pool, beach, bike riding, kayaking, tennis, and nearby golf. The house is very clean and comfortable and we appreciate that Tara makes it feel like home for her guests. Thanks Tara for being such a responsive host and for allowing our family to enjoy another week in paradise!

Absolutely Amazing!

The house was absolutely amazing and the pictures accurately portray everything about the house!!! Tara made everything so easy for us from initial booking, to providing recommendations to leaving the property. The house was extremely clean and we didn't have one issue the entire time we were there. My family used all of their great amenities such as pier, pool table, basketball hoop game, etc.. We especially enjoyed the pier were my kids spent hours trying to find a fish and crabs. We are already trying to think about next year's rental since everything was perfect!

A Great Getaway for Families of All Ages

I cannot say enough about this amazing rental property . The owners have truly thought of everything. The home was accessible for my elderly grandparents but had more than enough to keep the teenagers busy. From the kayaks and bicycles to the cornhole games, we were busy the entire week and we barely had to leave the house. It was clean and so peaceful, we loved enjoying family meals on the screened in porch. Our Great Dane also had the best week lounging in the yard and watching the wildlife. We truly cannot say enough about this place and are already planning a trip back. Thank you, Tara, for our best family vacation yet.

the best house

We’re two families who have travelled together for nearly 15 years - and without doubt this was our very favorite house. Everything was perfect: right next to the inland water that people call The Sound (we rented kayaks)with a view from every room. We saw a sea otter, an osprey catch a fish, herons… Ten minutes or less to the beach where you have special access - there we saw dolphins. Duck is the nearest town - loved that too. Inside there was thoughtful low key modern decor, orchids, a separate room for our teenagers over the boathouse, impeccably stocked kitchen and bathrooms - plus a host who really went extra mile to put up with an awkward request and was fully available. We’re already talking about next year.

Fantastic home and location

Excellent host and exactly as described. The screened in porch was situated next to the pool with a great view of the sound. It was a great gathering place. The pool is a good size that we could all enjoy. We had the master bedroom on the main floor which was great. The 4 kids were in an upstairs bedroom with the the parents in the upstairs master. We never heard them. My daughter and granddaughter were in the boathouse and they loved the privacy. Kitchen was well stocked with spices, utensils and pots and pans. Tara, the host had a welcome basket with goodies and fun prizes for the kids which was very thoughtful. There was great communication and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended!

I would have given 5/5 on everything but there were a few minor things. The house and location is perfect. Quiet neighborhood in the middle of everything. Pool was awesome and being on the sound was so relaxing. The owner was very responsive and text weeks ahead of time to go through everything with us. The WiFi needs to be upgraded. Very weak and our mobile service was weak too. Not that, that was a huge deal because there was so much to do but definitely a minor fix that could be made. Also the upstairs bathroom toilet was problematic throughout the week. Had to jiggle the handle every time we flushed or it would keep running. And on the last night it stopped flushing completely. Owner knew about the issue so we were a little bummed that hadn't been fixed before we arrived. Again not a deal killer or enough to ruin our stay. We absolutely loved the house otherwise. Would definitely stay here again!

Memorial Day getaway

This property is absolutely beautiful! My favorite feature was the screened-in porch – it quickly became our go-to spot for morning coffee, afternoon reading, and evening wildlife watching. Even though we had some rain during our stay, the porch made it easy to still enjoy the outdoors. With a dining table, loveseat, and comfy chairs, we were able to relax while watching river otters, ospreys, and even a baby deer passing by.A close second favorite was the pier – perfectly situated for the most stunning sunsets! It was peaceful and scenic, and a great place to unwind at the end of the day.The grocery store was minutes away and the kitchen was well-stocked with everything we needed to cook basic meals, which made it easy to settle in and feel at home. The layout of the home is also ideal for multiple couples or families. One bedroom and bathroom has a separate entrance, offering added privacy, and the main bedroom on the first floor is nicely separated from the upstairs bedrooms – a great setup if you’re concerned about noise or different schedules.Overall, this was a fantastic getaway. Whether you're looking to relax, reconnect with nature, or simply enjoy a beautiful view rain or shine, this property delivers. Highly recommend!

Wonderful family getaway!

The property is in a really beautiful setting in Southern Shores with amazing views over the sound -- mornings and evenings well spent watching nature's show from the fully screened-in porch or the end of the dock. The house worked really well for our group of 5 adults, 5 kids (ranging in age from 3-10) and dog. Plenty of room for all 5 kids in the bunk room, two great-sized bedrooms in the house for the adults, and the added benefit of privacy in the separate boathouse accommodation. The pool was ideal for us, as it has a very wide, shallow step, which allowed the 3 yo to play confidently while her older sisters/cousins swam in the main part of the pool. We alternated mornings at the pool with afternoons at the beach -- parking permits for beach access included -- or other nearby activities (water park, dolphin cruise etc.) OBX has much to offer for a family vacation, and Surround Sound was a fantastic base. Owner was really communicative, attentive and available. We would happily return.

What we loved:- Private beach is only a few minutes away, and is much quieter than surrounding beaches. There was always ample parking.- Quiet neighborhood with friendly neighbors. Surrounded by nature - we particularly enjoyed watching the osprey fish. - Beautiful view from the dock, we experienced some beautiful sunsets. Low light pollution - can clearly see the stars at night- Great for pets, the backyard backs to water and the rest fully is fenced off.- Spacious rooms and clean bathrooms. High ceilings in the living room.- Great for families. Lots of games and activities provided. Lots of fishing supplies provided. My son and I enjoy catching crabs right off the deck.- Well stocked kitchen. My wife and I like to cook, and we weren’t missing anything in the kitchen. Great appliances we particularly enjoyed the craft ice maker.- Pool is pretty and is fun in the evening with its colorful lights.Great location that’s close to great restaurants in Duck- Homeowner was responsive and made checkin seamless.Areas for improvement:- Jacuzzi only heated at specific times and for a fee.- Kayaks cost extra, and they are hard to get them into the water - the path was not clear.- The top bunk could use a guard rail, was nervous about having our son sleeping there. - The pedal boat was a little flimsy.- Check-out time was too early.

Thanks so much for the thorough review. We too wish the swim spa was less expensive to heat. Unfortunately, the peddle boat will have to be retired as parts are no longer made and I cannot replace steering mechanism. We and years of guest did enjoy it though. We hope you come back again! Great Home But Not Fully Furnished and Misleading Description

The photos of this home are spot on. It is located in a quiet neighborhood with direct access to the sound. The house is spacious and for the most part comfortable. I did thoroughly enjoy having the sound in the backyard. It is very special and we enjoyed our morning coffee and happy hour on the pier! What I found frustrating was the misleading description as the beach is about a 30 min walk (1.4 miles) and the Duck Boardwalk is a 26 min bike ride (1.9 miles according to Google Maps). So the location is farther than stated. Also, we only had one bike for half the time so that was disappointing. It is just frustrating to be given inaccurate information. I do not appreciate being misled. With this, we found it frustrating not to have a fully furnished home, as it would be with a professionally managed vacation home. We did not have any: *extra pillows *blankets *serving utensils *platters *trivets * starter paper towel * place to hang clothes (wet and dry) in the main bedroom, nor drawers *body soap *chairs on the upstairs balcony. Also frustrating: * only 2 dish towels * a dirty sponge along with a used and dirty rag that was left on the TV shelf *dirty coffee carafe The owner told me to go to Walmart to get these things if I needed them. I found this disappointing and rude. It would have been so easy to have the housekeeper come to drop them off. The other disappointing issue was the owner's closet's lights remained on and that was such a waste of energy. Again, this is a lovely home and the owner was responsive with communicating via text. We would rent it again, knowing that we would need to provide some items. It is just too bad that it is not professionally managed as it could be a 5-star place.

Shari, We do appreciate your feedback. The distance to the beach depends on which beach access you choose. For future renters, we provide starter supplies so you do not have to immediately go to the store. This includes TP, paper towels, dish soap, new sponge, laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and much more! Our goal is to make you comfortable and provide a relaxing experience!

Lovely property, a few comments

Five girlfriends and I rented this house for a week in early June 2021 for a 50th birthday girls trip getaway. The host was overall good with communication and did let me know that this property was new to her and we were her first VRBO guests. The property is lovely and as described. It's roomy, light and bright, and the grounds and dock are charming. But we did have a few issues, the main one being fleas in the downstairs areas (living room/dining area). We contacted the host who offered to send someone in to spray for fleas. But we did not want them spraying chemicals while we were still staying there, which felt like a health hazard to us. The listing includes the promise of a pedal boat, which floated away before we arrived. The host later contacted us to say it had been recovered and was at the Marina if we wanted to go get it. While we did want use of the boat -- it's one of the reasons we rented this particular VRBO -- it would have been difficult to get it, and it would have been great if the owner could have had it brought back to the property for us. Other things to note: the beach is a 25-minute walk, so it would be good to clarify that - much easier to drive or bike. The host supplies enough paper products and soap (toilet paper, hand soap, etc.) to get you started, but you will need to purchase more for the week. We had to clean the outdoor gas grill ourselves (from whomever used it last). There's a small rip in the screened-in porch which makes it buggy and hard to use after dark. None of these things in-and-of themselves are deal breakers. But considering we were paying a competitive price in a sought-after vacation destination, we expected a bit more. The host was very responsive and communicative, and is working hard to improve the property. The location is terrific and overall the property is comfortable and offered many amenities, like outdoor seating areas, the fire pit, pool table, bikes, beach chairs, strong air conditioning and strong wifi. A ladder from the pier into the water would be great too!

Wendy, Thanks for your feedback and again Happy Birthday! The house has been professionally retreated for insects and not a concern for future guest! We would have preferred to address the issue immediately as we offered. We have all options for accessing the beach! Walk - we provide a cooler and beach cart for chairs/towels (20 min stroll) Bike - we provide 2 comfort bikes and lock (5-10 min) Drive - we provide 2 parking passes to the home owners beach access with bathrooms and showers! (5 minutes). Also glad you enjoyed the new air conditioning systems!! Surround Sound is a new acquisition for our family but we are not new to VRBO. We are rated as "premier host" because we work hard for each guest to have a top notch vacation! Thanks so much for your visit and so glad you enjoyed an OBX birthday!

We had a fantastic stay at this property. In fact, my kids are already hoping to return next year. The house was exactly as represented in the listing, the owner was great and easy to communicate with, and the location was lovely. We hadn’t previously stayed in the Southern Shores area and weren’t sure what to expect. It was a quiet community with beach access provided just a short drive away. The pool was our favorite of any house we’ve rented. It has a nice entry (would also be good for babies and toddlers with the extended shallow end to sit and play with supervision) and plenty of space for the 4 of us to enjoy. The screened in porch was my favorite part. It rained the first 2 days we were there. Being able to sit on the porch and enjoy the rain on the water was a bonus. We did bring our dog with us. It was nice not having to walk her down lots of stairs to go out each time. She also enjoyed the screened porch as she could keep an eye on us in the pool. The house had everything we needed to cook and provided extras such as beach/pool towels, floats, fishing poles. I have nothing but great things to say about this stay!

Beautiful, relaxing, quiet, comfortable, quaint, peaceful, & tranquil all at once!!! Can’t say enough about how wonderful a vacation my family had. The Beds were the most comfortable away from home beds I have ever slept.Private Beach access was AWSOME! Planning a return trip!

We had a wonderful stay and truly enjoyed this beautiful OBX property. Check-in was seamless, and Tara was an excellent host — very attentive, polite, and quick to respond. Any minor issues were handled promptly.This trip was especially meaningful for our family, as it had been nine years since we were all able to spend a few days together. Many lasting memories were made, largely thanks to the beautiful property. The views from the house and dock are incredible, and renting the kayaks was a highlight. The only disappointment was that the hot tub was unavailable for the last three nights of our stay. Tara responded right away and offered a refund, which we appreciated, though we were still a bit disappointed as we had looked forward to enjoying it during our family evenings together.The amenities exceeded expectations. The home was well stocked with paper towels, toilet paper, & tissues, and the kitchen had everything needed — plenty of pots, pans, utensils, dishes & more. Plenty of oversized pool towels and bath towels were provided. For guests with dogs, it was a nice bonus to find dog beds, bowls, and shampoo available. Overall, the home had everything we needed, and Walmart and Harris Teeter are just 5–10 minutes away.One small note: the upstairs has only one bathroom, so with two adults and two young girls we coordinated showers and getting ready, not an issue overall, just helpful to know.Overall, we had a fantastic, memorable stay and would absolutely return.
