Historic Farmhouse on 14 Private Acres: Fall Foliage, Fireplaces, Midcoast Maine
Autumn by Day. Fireside by Night.
Dating to the early 1800s and thoughtfully modernized, this historic Maine farmhouse offers a rare combination of authenticity, comfort, and deep quiet. Set on 14 private acres of forest and meadow in rural Waldoboro, the property provides privacy and space while remaining close to Damariscotta Lake, Pemaquid Point, Camden, Boothbay Harbor, and many of Midcoast Maine's most beloved destinations.
Autumn is one of the most beautiful times to experience Midcoast Maine. Wander through colorful coastal villages, drive winding country roads lined with brilliant foliage, hike forest trails in crisp air, visit lighthouses overlooking the Atlantic, browse the shops and galleries of Camden and Damariscotta, or enjoy fresh seafood without the summer crowds.
Then return to your own quiet retreat. As the sun sets and temperatures cool, relax on 14 private acres surrounded by woods and meadow, watch wildlife cross the fields, enjoy an evening by one of the fireplaces, or settle into the library with a favorite book. Lupine Cottage is designed for guests who want to experience the best of Maine during the day, then recharge each evening in peace and comfort.
One of the great pleasures of autumn in Midcoast Maine is the weather itself. Days are comfortably cool for hiking and exploring, while evenings often invite sweaters, open windows, and a fire. Air conditioning remains available for the occasional warm afternoon, but most guests find nature provides all the cooling they need.
The original house retains its wide pine floors, exposed beams, and working fireplaces, while a substantial addition ("the Barn"), completed in the 1980s, provides additional space, natural light, and modern conveniences. The result is a home that feels rooted in history while offering the comfort expected by today's travelers.
The House
The main living areas are warm and inviting, centered around original fireplaces and wood-burning stoves. A dedicated library and reading room with built-in bookshelves offers a quiet place to read, write, or simply unplug, while the main living room is ideal for conversation, board games, or relaxing after a day exploring the coast.
The Barn provides a large, open, and airy gathering space with high ceilings, wrap-around windows, abundant natural light, and additional room to relax or work remotely.
The kitchen is large, bright, and fully modernized, with ample counter space and contemporary appliances. It's well suited for preparing family meals, cooking fresh local seafood, or enjoying produce picked up from nearby farm stands. The dining area overlooks the lawn and gardens.
Sleeping arrangements include:
• Two private bedrooms
• A large loft with an additional bed and dedicated office/workspace
The home comfortably accommodates up to five guests.
A recently renovated bathroom includes a double vanity and clean, modern finishes.
Comfort & Connectivity
• Central heating throughout
• Air conditioning (rarely needed during the fall)
• Three working fireplaces
• Wood-burning stoves
• High-speed internet suitable for remote work
• Dedicated workspace in the loft
Whether you're visiting for peak foliage, a long weekend, or a quiet off-season retreat, the home is comfortable year-round.
Outdoors & Setting
The house sits back from the road, surrounded by forest, stone walls, perennial gardens, open meadow, and mature trees. Wildlife is common, and guests frequently spot deer, wild turkeys, songbirds, and other local wildlife.
Outdoor seating is perfect for morning coffee while the mist lifts from the fields, afternoon reading among the changing leaves, or evening drinks beneath increasingly brilliant stars.
As the nights grow longer, Lupine Cottage becomes an exceptional place for stargazing. Away from city lights, the skies are remarkably dark and the Milky Way is often visible on clear autumn evenings.
Fall Highlights
Fall Foliage
The property itself is surrounded by colorful hardwood forest, making foliage part of the experience without ever getting in the car. As September turns into October, the surrounding landscape transforms into vibrant shades of gold, orange, and crimson.
The scenic drives between Waldoboro, Camden, Damariscotta, Round Pond, and Pemaquid Point are among the most beautiful in Maine.
Jefferson
Just 5 minutes (3.3 miles) from the house, Jefferson offers several local favorites.
Jefferson Market serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, sandwiches, pizza, baked goods, coffee, and prepared meals—perfect after a day of exploring when you don't feel like cooking.
Nearby you'll also find Jefferson Scoop (while open for the season) and Damariscotta Lake State Park, whose beach and walking areas remain beautiful well into the fall.
Windsor Fair
Guests visiting in early September can enjoy the historic Windsor Fair, one of Maine's oldest agricultural fairs. Livestock, local food, exhibits, rides, music, and classic New England fair traditions make it a wonderful seasonal outing.
Explore Midcoast Maine
The farmhouse is centrally located for exploring Midcoast Maine:
• ~5 minutes (3.3 miles) to Jefferson, Jefferson Market, Jefferson Scoop, and Damariscotta Lake State Park
• ~20 minutes to Damariscotta and Newcastle
• ~30 minutes to Camden and Wiscasset
• ~35 minutes to Round Pond and New Harbor
• ~45 minutes to Boothbay Harbor and Pemaquid Point Lighthouse
Popular day trips include:
• Camden Harbor & Camden Hills State Park

• Pemaquid Beach
• Damariscotta & Newcastle
• Boothbay Harbor
• Round Pond
• Local oyster farms

• Monhegan Island ferry departures (seasonal)
Many harbor cruises, sailing excursions, and boat tours continue into early fall. Whale watching, puffin cruises, and Monhegan ferry schedules become more limited later in the season, so guests should check seasonal operating dates.
