My daughter and I moved into this condo building when she was 2 years old. We lived here for 7 years. I renovated my first unit to make it comfortable to live in year-round or one week at a time! I moved down the street to Beaufort and rented my unit. That went so well, I decided to buy another unit and renovated it just as nice or better. Everything is new, easy to use, and easy to clean. New AC/heat, new appliances, new washer/dryer. The master bath was upgraded to a full bathroom. I chose Southwinds because it is a family oriented complex and kid friendly. My daughter has made many friends with kids coming down during the summer. She learned to swim in the pool by trying to keep up with the 'big' kids while shunning my advice. Usually there are some kids at the pool or beach to make friends with. However, it never gets too crowded or noisy that you can't relax and have a romantic getaway.

Southwinds is at the quiet end of Atlantic Beach near Fort Macon. From the Southwinds beach to the left is a 200-yard walk to the bath houses at Fort Macon State Park with a full concession. Freezer pops and ice cream used to be only 50 cents. Walk a mile further to Beaufort Inlet and Fort Macon - the actual Civil War brick fort that is full of cannons and reenactments. Friday night concerts are held in Fort Macon during the summer. During the day, bunny rabbits run across the front lawn. Sometimes large turtles crawl across the lawn. At night you may see foxes trot across the Southwinds parking lot, but they are shy and run away quickly. Bring a flashlight to the beach at sundown and look for ghost crabs along the edge of the surf. Sea turtles come to the area and lay their eggs during late Spring / early Summer nights and hatch during a full moon in the early Fall. Sea turtle nests are wired off and protected. Volunteers monitor the nests close to hatch time and the public can watch the turtles hatch if you are lucky enough to be there at the right time.

From Southwinds beach to the right is a two mile walk to the Oceana Pier, the Atlantic Beach circle and main public beach. Amos Mosquito's Restaurant is only half a mile down the road from Southwinds, with other restaurants just a little further down the road.
