Beware of property management companies
It does not bode well when you arrive at the “Elegant Georgian Apartment” that you have booked and open the front door of the house to find a hallway full of bulging black rubbish bags and a pile of discarded cardboard. The hallway itself was in need of redecoration. Not shabby chic, just shabby, and the carpet needed vacuuming.
The front door to the apartment was not double locked when we tried it, as the door was out of alignment. Once we had brought our stuff in and unpacked, we sat down to read the ‘welcome’ manual. We were urged not to wear outdoor shoes. A bit late. We were told to always double lock the front door on leaving. We couldn’t. The information pack is out of date – the bin collection schedule is for 2018–2019 – and it is made up of random bits of information in no order. There was a tourist map of Bristol, but otherwise no helpful leaflets about the area. Also, there was nothing to explain the sunken sockets in the kitchen island. We worked it out in the end, but to people not used to such technology, it is a bit baffling.
The apartment itself, although distinctly spartan in appearance, appeared clean, but very stuffy. We tried opening the windows, but those at the front of the property will not stay open unless you find something with which to prop them. The windows at the back of the property will stay open but, as we discovered to our cost, there is a foul stench which is intermittently emitted in the bizarre chimney-like courtyard outside the bedroom and bathroom. It smells as though piles of rotting onions have been deposited there and it permeates the whole flat if those windows are open.
The bed is a disaster. It is probably the most uncomfortable bed I have ever encountered. It is like trying to sleep on lumpy concrete. Sadly, it has the pillows to match. There is no mattress protector, which in a rental property is appallingly unhygienic. There is no bedside table at one side of the bed. There is a hairdryer, but no mirror in the bedroom with which to use it.
There is a problem with drains. The bathroom sink takes an age to empty. The shower tray drain is full of hair and black mould. The cupboard under the kitchen sink is smelly. Everywhere has a vague whiff about it.
Nothing about this place was welcoming. We spent as little time as possible there. In over 30 years of renting holiday properties this must be awarded first place as the worst, narrowly beating something horrible in about 1993.
