Many of the residents still make their livings from the sound and sea, and the island’s charter fleet to the Gulf Stream and into the Pamlico Sound is headquartered in Hatteras. Be sure to schedule a visit to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum just two miles away, check in at the Hatteras Island Ocean Center less than a half-mile from your door, or take a scenic trip on the free ferry over to Ocracoke Island.
