Om vÀrden
Stephanie Koontz Àr vÀrd

We are Donald and Stephanie Koontz and we're both lifelong Alaskans born and raised. We've lived in the Matanuska Valley area for nearly 10 years. We have two kiddos and enjoy the many outdoor activities that Alaska has to offer. We love to travel, renovate homes, & raise our children in one of the most beautiful states in the U.S.
Varför vÀrden valde detta boende
The story behind our name is that we are rehab addicts who enjoy restoring things to their former glory. We watched this particular diamond in the rough for four years before buying it in 2018. We revived it by doing a major renovation that included tearing off a 1970's addition, adding the entryway & fully remodeling both the interior and exterior. We did our best to salvage and display any and all of the original materials that remained including the log construction and Southeast Alaskan fir floors.
Please be aware that since this home is nearly 100 years old some of the quirks (such as some squeaks in the floorboards) were just impossible to remedy during the renovation process. Itâs all part of the charm! Weâve done our best to modernize it for convenience, but still keep its historical value!
This is one of the properties that was part of the New Deal program that President Roosevelt created to help move the United States out of the Great Depression. It was one of many rural rehabilitation colonies to be established. Over 200 families from areas in Michigan, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Minnesota came to the fertile Alaskan valley to start fresh in a new community. Only about 100 families remained after the first year or two. On May 23, 1935, each family drew and received a 40 acre tract. They had a choice between five style homes of log or frame construction. This particular home, the home of Clarence & Beulah Parks, was built out of log and then covered with stucco in later years because the colonists were in such a hurry to get the homes built before winter that they used green logs that shrunk with time which didnât make for a very warm, comfortable environment. If youâre interested to learn more about the history of this property and the community, we have some books here that explain in more detail that you are welcome to read during your stay here or visit the Palmer Visitor Center & Colony House Museum located downtown.
