I'm so happy you and your family enjoyed OceanVista! I'm sorry you were disappointed when you discovered the round area of the pool is not a hot tub. Hot tubs are pretty rare on Bonaire. Mostly people are looking for ways to cool off, not warm up! We look forward to your return!

Ouch! That’s a headline! Hopefully my 140(+) 5-star reviews for this unit and our other two units in the same complex will serve as a testament to the quality of service and responsive, polite communication our many wonderful guests regularly experience. As for this guest, all communication and activity was absolutely kind and polite and normal until the response I received from him after I contacted him post-stay about a charge he owed for excess electricity and to convey a report of unsanitary conditions left in the kitchen at departure (for which he was not being charged, only notified). His reaction made it clear he was not someone with whom I wanted to further associate, so I sent him a nice note and wrote off the utility overage charge and moved on, taking a good reminder lesson to pay more attention to my gut instincts. I didn't even leave a rating on this site for the guest because "if you can't say something good, say nothing at all". But now comes this public review replete with a personal attack and delusional accusations, compelling me to at least respond in my defense. Regarding the objective items mentioned, yes, it is hot in Bonaire in July, for sure, no matter what floor you are on. Our a/c units are high-efficiency inverter units that are serviced regularly and they work very well. As for the lock, our caretaker lubricated it the same day the guest called about the sticking key, and it is working fine now. And to wrap this drama up, my husband and I call this unit “home” for half of every year. It is well maintained and exactly as represented on the listing. We are very thankful for the 99.9% of our guests, including many regular “return guests” who come every year, some even two or more times a year, and don’t want to stay anywhere else. These great guests treat our homes respectfully and pay according to the agreements they have made, just like they would expect from a guest in their own home.

Indeed Carnival week on Bonaire is a big festival for the locals, and there can be road closures for parades, and at certain times businesses close to let their employees enjoy the celebrations. For some visitors, it is best to avoid visiting during this particular week, while others wish to come for this specific week because the enjoy the unique cultural festivities. It is as close to Mardi Gras as you can get on this small island! Regarding use of the a/c: Some clarification is offered here so readers are not confused by what was mentioned in the review. Guests are never asked to avoid using the a/c (as the review suggests). In the information package, the a/c instructions do request guests to only use a/c in the space they are occupying at a given time (i.e., please don't leave a/c on all night in the livingroom while sleeping in the bedroom with the a/c running in there, or vise versa during the day.) Guests are also asked to turn off a/c units when leaving the unit. With each room having its own a/c (split units, the most common set-up in the tropics), rooms cool off very quickly once the a/c is turned on. About half of the electricity on Bonaire is still supplied by diesel generators (using shipped in diesel fuel), so electricity is quite expensive and further, there is environmental impact relative to energy consumed. Information provided to guests simply asks them to be energy conscious. Some guests have a personal preference to be enclosed in constant cool temperatures while others enjoy open doors and windows for the tropical atmosphere and warm trade winds. That is up to a guest's personal preference and there is no judgment - or "extra charge" - either way. Different strokes for different folks : )
