Molyvos house description

LOCATION
Pomegranate Cottage is in a unique position in the heart of historic Molyvos yet with shops, bars and tavernas nearby and the beach and lively harbour only 5 minutes' walk away.

THE HOUSE
The house has been refurbished by ourselves to excellent modern standards and very well equipped, yet retains the charm of a traditional Molyvos town house. Enjoy long leisurely meals on the fabulous vine-draped terrace (seats 8), with breathtaking views of the coast, or relax in the shade of the downstairs walled garden with its orange and pomegranate trees (barbeque). Lovely views from all the spacious rooms which have both style and simplicity. Ideally suited to friends or families sharing with a bathroom upstairs and downstairs and plenty of room to chill out.!

ATMOSPHERE
A charming village with cobbled streets shaded by a canopy of ancient wisteria trees. A traditional butcher and baker intermingle with mini-markets (which stock absolutely everything) and stylish crafts and jewellery
shops. A great choice of cafes, tavernas and cake shops. A few minutes' stroll down the hill takes you to the harbour which comes alive in the evening with its many waterside restaurants and throngs of people enjoying the opportunity to have a fabulous meal in a waterside restaurant on a beautiful warm starlit night.

THE BEACH
The beach is a few minutes' walk down a path or along the road. There are sun loungers and umbrellas for rent as well as watersports provided by Thassos. The sea is very clean and clear with beautiful swimming and snorkelling. The beach is pebby but becomes sandy once you're in the water.

WHAT YOU SAY
'Your house is so lovely. You paid so much attention to detail and results are amazing.'
'We have enjoyed every single minute here, so beautiful, perfection!'

MORE ABOUT THE ISLAND
Lesbos is Greece's third largest island with dramatic mountain scenery and a landscape of olive groves and pine forests with the occasional monastery. It is a great place for walking, bird watching, relaxing on the beach and enjoying some of the best food in Greece. There are several thermal baths on the island including one at Eftalou just outside Molivos. The capital Mytilene is an interesting city to explore with museums and art galleries and a beautiful cathedral. The east of the island is characterised by lunar landscape and the fascinating petrified forest while Eressos, Sigri and Plomari are charming towns with pleasant beaches.

NOTES ABOUT THE HOUSE
Kitchen basics are left in the cupboard for our guests to use. We also leave a small welcome pack for your arrival. There is a video recorder in the study/baby room with a selection of videos (mainly for children).
There are plenty of books and CDs and free wifi.
Air conditioning in the two main bedrooms and several fans. Heaters for early/late season.
It's not possible to park outside the house as it is along a narrow track but parking is nearby.

TRANSPORT
There is a reasonably good bus service across the island, especially between Molyvos and Mytilini and May to September there is a regular bus service along the coast from Molyvos to Petra and Anaxos. There is a taxi rank just outside the town.
There are plans to start a ferry from nearby Petra to Turkey in 2014.
There is a large port in Mytilini with daily sailings to Athens (about 9 hours).and also Turkey and Chios. Domestic flights to Athens take about 45 minutes (Aegean and Olympic Airways).
Direct charter flights from the UK (Gatwick and Manchester and Birmingham) are from May to Mid October on Saturdays (currently operated by Monarch and Thomas Cook). Otherwise you have to fly via Athens (Easyjet, Aegean and British Airways. There are also direct flights from Holland, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Germany.
We can get a taxi from the airport to Molyvos (approx 75 euros) or you can hire a car.

TRIPS
There are some spectacular walks on the island, which are particularly enjoyable in the early and late season (good book if walks in the house).
Bird watching is superb in spring and autumn and Molyvos is about half an hour from the gulf of Kalloni where many interesting birds can be spotted (120 seen by guests!). Mountain bikes can be hired locally and for the less energetic donkey treks can be arranged with local travel agents- usually into the nearby hills and ending up at a taverna. The swimming is good everywhere and you can snorkel around the rocks off Molyvos. Serious beach enthusiasts might prefer to idle the day away at the nearby larger sandy beaches of Petra and Anaxos. Boat/fishing trips along the coast are wonderfully relaxing.

Access to the house is up quite a steep pathway so it is impossible to drive right up to the house. Good parking is nearby but really the joy of this house is that you do not need a car. Molyvos is a delightful town in the north east of the island, dominated by its ancient hilltop castle and with phenomenal sea views. The winding cobbled streets reveal the tranquillity of traditional Greek life, majestic town houses, painted in reds and greens, alongside an array of stylish tavernas, bars and shops. There are a range of mini-markets nearby as well as a good baker and butcher. Nightlife is unsophisticated and mainly centres on the lively harbour front with its many tavernas and bars, some with live music, as well as the occasional nightclub.(Fewer bars, shops etc open in low season) There is an open-air cinema in peak season, with films in English. Minutes away from the house, the small town beach is pebbly, with sand out to sea, but the swimming is great, water sports, sun beds etc are available and there is a lovely open air pool adjacent. Nearby is the pretty village of Petra which has an excellent sandy beach and Eftalou, famous for its popular thermal baths..

Other Activities: Donkey trekking, Bird watching

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2000

About the owner: I'm an English language teacher and my husband is a structural engineer. We live on the south coast in England and for years have enjoyed family holidays on the Greek islands. When we first went to Molyvos, we realised immediately what a unique place it was. It has so much charm and beauty, spectacular views all around and retains its culture and sense of history.

Why the Owner Chose Molyvos:
When we first started looking for a house in Molyvos, there were no estate agents and a local retired school teacher with inside knowledge told us about the houses that were for sale. What first attracted us to Pomegranate cottage was the view of the bay but when we went inside, I was horrified by the dilapidated state of the place. Fortunately, my husband has a vivid imagination and after 2 year's of toil and bureaucratic grief, we managed to create a lovely home, which still retained the typical style of 200 years ago but with the benefit of modern comforts.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
We have grown to love our house. it has a great sense of community and its location is perfect, so near to everything yet tucked away along an old donkey track. We love having a terrace and a garden, which is quite unusual so near the village centre and it's great to be able to walk everywhere and never use the car.
