History of the House Jaco
In the middle of the XVIII century the land on the which the house was built was occupied by a temporary palace of Empress Elizabeth. After dismantling of the palace the royal kitchens remained there, as did the Throne Hall. The Throne Hall was then given to sculptor E. Falcone for work on the iconic monument to Peter the Great also known as the 'Bronze Horseman'. Falcone moved here in 1766 & he rebuilt the building which housed the former palace kitchen. The monument was constructed in the courtyard. In 1773, Falcone was visited by his friend the french philosopher Diderot, he stayed in the house until 1778, when he returned to France.
After the departure of the French the site housed a warehouse of marble for the construction of a number of buildings which gave rise to the naming of the laneway at the side of the building: Kirpichny (brick) lane. A residential two-storey house was built in 1801 when the site was owned by a prussian merchant (also the consul). In 1822 his heirs divied the land in two. Then in 1836 the side adjacent to the Bolshaya Morskaya Street was sold to architect Paul Jaco who designed many historical buildings in St. Petesburg.
In the years 1837-1838 Jaco built the current four-story building. Iron girders were used in the construction of first floor windows - an innovation for the local civil engineering community. In 1842 Faberge started his business with the opening of a workshop in the basement. During the 1860s Chief Marshal Count Ivan M. Tolstoy lived in the house, he had formerly been a Senator and Minister of Posts and Telegraphs and a member of the State Council. The house remained in the his family until 1917. In the 1930s the kirpichny (brick) lane end of the house become the 'House of Artists', or an artists commune.

Apartment was great. Small issue with hot water but overall very satisfactory time and good value for money. Person taking care of the apartment did seem to be a little short and hard to communicate with in English. Extremely central location and we walked to all major in town activities.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

We just returned from two chilly but fabulous weeks in St. Petersburg. The day after we returned home, I checked the calendar for this property's availability in June! I can't imagine staying anywhere else. The location is better than perfect, and the apartment has everything you could possibly need or want. I had a couple of questions after we arrived, and I was able to get those answered immediately. I can't think of any reason to hesitate - this should be your first choice for a vacation rental in St. Petersburg!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Stayed for a week in early September in this great apartment. Spacious and recently remodeled. Perfect locations - one block to the metro and Nevisky Prospect - 3-5 minute walk to the Hermaitage Museum. The owners, Peter and Yana, live in Ireland but still provided helpful information and Tatiana serves as your local greeter and host and all do a speldid job. Highly recommend this place to all - you won't be disappointed.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/3

Our entire family of 8 persons stayed in Peter & Yana’s apartment on Bolshaya Morskaya this month in august 2012, and we loved it!! The location of the apartment was great -right in the center of the city and a short walk from the Hermitage and all the center city museums & attractions and only 1 minute walk from admiralteiskaya metro station. The service was wonderful, and hospitality was warm. We were treated royally! The apartment also had a nice kitchen with all the appliances including microwave, fridge, stove, oven, & dishwasher; also a washing machine to wash clothes plus towels, soap, hair products & other useful travel items. We greatly recommend this as luxuruous center-city accomodations with great service!!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/3

All was exactly as described. The owners are very helpful, and of course honest. The apartment is very clean, tastefully decorated, and and the kitchen is a treat. The location was incredible -- just off Nevsky Prspt, a few hundred meters from the Hermitage. Restaurants very convenient, as was food and beer/wine/spirits shopping. The McDonalds downstairs was not an issue -- even at night we could never hear noise -- since the walls are so thick. We were there for a week, and the apartment made life easy for us.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

Our stay in St. Petersburg was fantastic. The flat is very modern, open and airy. It was perfectly located within walking distance to all attractions and the kitchen was very convenient for making a few meals at home. It easily slept 6 people and it was obvious that much care and attention has gone into this place as it has all the comforts of home, including a speedy Internet connection! The owners were very helpful when it came to answering questions about visa registration, arranging taxis and being flexible with check in and check out times. Our deposit was returned promptly after check out. We would absolutely recommend anyone to stay in this flat given the opportunity!!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

This apartment is stunning, exceptionally clean with all western amenities provided. We were met promptly at the pre-arranged time and instructions were also provided in English. Our greeter also arranged a taxi home, which met us at the appointed time, knew where we where going and the pre-arranged fair. The location is outstanding, just steps from the Hermitage, many other sights and the metro. Peter was a wonderful, very helpful host! Highly recommended.Did you find this review helpful? We stayed for 2 nights in this apartment, just off of Nevsky and it was perfect. We had 2 families, so we were looking for a place with 2 bathrooms. Between the 2 families, there were 4 adults and 5 kids, ages 6 - 12. The owners were accommodating of our situation and offered to get an extra mattress for the one kid who didn't have a bed (the other 4 doubled up on the sofa beds). The apartment is beautifully remodeled, easy to find, convenient to all the sites of Moscow and has McDonalds on the first floor. We've rented apartments in St. Pete and other European cities many times, and this was by far our best experience. You won't be sorry if you rent this apartment! I highly recommend it.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/2

About the owner: We are Peter & Yana Crowley we live in Ireland but visit St. Petersburg with our three children as often as we can. We bought the apartment in part to preserve a family connection with Russia.
Why the Owner Chose Saint Petersburg:
We visit St. Petersburg regularly, previously staying in vacation rentals at different locations in the city. Soon after we decided to buy an apartment in the city we heard about this apartment. We knew the building as we had stayed in the building previously. We bought it in 2006, then renovated it from top to bottom over the following 2 years.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Feel the bustle of the city around you, enjoy the historical surroundings. People watch from the comfort of the bay windows located in the kitchen.
