Little House in the Big Woods

The Little House at Jericho is an early American farmhouse located on the Abington side of Pomfret, Connecticut, in a secluded storybook location on 144 acres of preserved land adjacent to the Airline Trail, the Wolf Den State Forest, Mashomoquet State Park and the New England Forestry Foundation's Chase Kimball Memorial Forest. The site is ideal for bird-watching from the deck over-looking the pond or at the Audubon Society's preserved sanctuary nearby, for long walks in the woods, cross-country skiing, or just for a place to get away from it all. Use of the tennis court is allowed, but hunting is strictly prohibited, as is use of any off-road vehicles. It is ideal for an artist or author's retreat.
The Little House has been lovingly preserved by eight generations of the same family who have lived at Jericho since 1814. This antique house has one large and two small bedrooms, a spacious living/dining room with a huge granite fireplace, and can sleep up to four people. Furnished with period country antiques, guests feel transported into the 18th century, until they slide back a door to find a modern kitchen with a view over an orchard and pond and a newly updated bathroom.
Jericho is situated close to Hyde, Pomfret and Rectory Schools, as well as the numerous scenic drives, destination restaurants, antique stores and boutiques in Windham County. This historic little house is nestled in the forest, far from the stress of daily life, but only a short drive from Old Sturbridge Village and Mystic Seaport. It is also less than an hour's drive from Hartford, Providence and Worcester and only a 20 minute drive from the University of Connecticut at Storrs. Boston is 90 miles Northeast and New York City 150 miles Southwest.

My friends and I stayed at this house a few days before my wedding and loved the New England charm of the house and its natural setting. The property is very well kept and your stay will feel more like a bed and breakfast with a steadfast inn keeper checking in on you. The unique part of this property is that the owner also lives on the large, pond-side lot. In fact, her door is but a few feet aways from yours. If you are in need, she is right there to service you. The house is definitely a great find!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: This review sounds as if I was hovering all the time and that the houses are too close, when in fact the houses are completely separate and I was away for most of the weekend, only there to let the guests in on Thursday evening, explain how things work, and make sure that they had everything they needed. I returned late on Sunday morning, after the bridal party's departure, though some of them returned later to pick up some wedding supplies/beverages that had been left behind. I was a bit disappointed that the bride had not told me in advance that she was coming for her own wedding, that she would be bringing five people (more than the house accommodates comfortably), moving furniture, assembling goody-bags for the large wedding, needing to borrow an air mattress (and additional linens), that everyone would need to be supplied with new toothbrushes, and that she and her fiance would be bringing a large Penske moving van/truck to drive over the lawn, etc. I wondered if they were going to leave with the entire contents of the house in the van! It would have been much better to have discussed the bride's special needs in advance. It also would have been nice if the guests had made an attempt to put things back as they had found them. However, I do not believe that there was any serious damage and I was thrilled to learn, on her arrival, that the bride had chosen to stay at the Little House for the weekend of her wedding at Tyrone Farm. I am glad that the wedding party enjoyed themselves and wish the young couple a lifetime of happiness.

We were in town for a wedding and opted to rent Little House rather than stay in a hotel. We are so happy we made this decision. The owner was very helpful and gracious. The Little House was clean and comfortable, with loads of bath products for our convenience. There is a wonderful pond in the back with lily pads and frogs. So serene. The house is also filled with original historic details from the 1800's, which were also fun. The property is very peaceful and secluded, so do not forget to bring a car.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children.

We had such a great time at the Little House. My girlfriend and I rented this adorable little place with one of our good friends while attending a wedding in nearby Woodstock, CT. We had a very pleasant experience here that was far more unique and peaceful than staying at a nearby chain hotel. The listing description was very accurate; this is an old house that has been updated to accommodate modern travelers, but with authentic furniture and antique architectural details. The Little House now has a lovely modern porch on which you can sunbathe, have a cocktail with friends, or just appreciate the quite nearby pond. Inside a washer/dryer, a/c unit, and remodeled bathroom give you all the creature comforts. Everything was clean and there were fresh linens and towels provided. The owner was very helpful with directions as well as questions regarding the house. If friends or relatives were travelling in the area I would definitely recommend this as an alternative to a hotel. So much more fun! Check out the Tyrone Estate and We-Lik-it Ice Cream (http://welikit.com/) if you come for a visit!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with young children.

It was a hidden treasure; very private cottage. We felt at home. When we arrived at night, it was so dark. We were worried how we could find the renting house. However, the green street sign to turn to the property was so bright and shining that we did not miss the street. The house was warm and cozy. It was simple and well organized. Everything was perfect. We like the exposed original rustic post and beam structure house decorated with family's antique furniture and accessaries. The beds were comfortable and big enough for us. The kitchen was charming and fully equipped. It was easy to use. The refrigerator was a full of breakfast stuff; bread, a bottle of welcome wine, a collection of home-made jam, gourmet coffee, tea and milk. The bath room was completely remodeled and clean. We also like herbal shampoo, conditioner and lotion, etc. We enjoyed hiking and bird watching in the private property with a year-round creek running through the woods. The owner guided us the hiking trail. It was exciting to find the red cardinal bird. It came to the bush right next to the dinning table window. We also thrilled to find a woodpecker and deer. It was also convenient to visit many interesting museums, popular restaurants, coffee shop and shopping. Major cities, Providence and Hartford are about one hour drive. Boston was also one and half hour. Since the owner lives right next to our little house, it was helpful. We also felt safer. She was so kind and informative. We had a wonderful time at the Little House in the Big Woods. We wish to come back again.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, tourists without a car.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1814
About the owner: After a career as an international civil servant, I retired in 2011 to the farmhouse where I spent summers as a child and with my own children and have restored the guesthouse behind my house. The 'Little House' is an 18th century farmhouse where my great-grandfather was born in 1823 and it has been occupied by the same family for seven generations. The bathroom is entirely new, as is the expansive deck on the back, but the rest is the original house, wide pine floorboards that originally came from a Congregational church nearby (when my parents did the first restoration in 1952) a huge fireplace, exposed beams and a warm cozy atmosphere.
Why the Owner Chose Pomfret:
The Quiet Corner of Connecticut is a delightful area, unspoiled and rural, but only a short drive to Boston, Providence, Hartford and Worcester. Pomfret is a particularly pretty town with a great deal of preserved woodland in a region with a wealth of historical significance. For anyone interested in American history, wildlife and bird-watching, this area has great appeal and is central for day trips to all of Southern New England's attractions
The Unique Benefits at this House:
I love the solitude in this secluded location. The deer feel safe here, and people tend to want to return to this peaceful sanctuary, where wildlife abound. Like most of New England, the weather and the seasons are always changing and bringing new surprises. What I like to do most is walk in the woods, or just sit and read in the serenity of Jericho
