Why the Owner Chose Private Homes
After visiting the Big Island since 1988 my family and I decided to use a rental property we owned in Santa Cruz, Ca. in an IRC 1031 exchange. Our friends in Hawaii helped us evaluate locations and this home with it's proximity to Keauhou Bay, Magic Sands Beach Park, and Kahalu'u State Beach has proved to be a perfect location for us and guests. Our central location allows trips to Keauhou Bay, Volcano National Park, Hapuna State Park, and Paniolo country.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Music and dance presentations at the Keauhou Shopping Center are free and of high quality. Also the shopping center has a multi-plex theater and good restaurants. We can easily walk to Magic Sands Beach and Kahalu'u Beach State Parks. Our two car garage allows for storage of a modest amount of sports gear and we are only 3 miles from the Kona Country Club golf course. Our residential neighborhood has allowed us to get to know Hawaii residents and to become friends.

Ben and Jan - Your house is perfect. My husband and I, along with 9 other members of our immediate family, spent a week at your home and it was absolutely fantastic. We rented the entire house for the 11 of us and it worked out beautifully. There was us, our kyds, grandkyds, and great grandkyds so the amount of room to move around was great. It was so comfortable and the pool was used daily. A short walk to the sandy beach as well as a short walk to the snorkling beach worked out for us also. The weather was beautiful while we were there. Also, our thanks to Carol for doing our shopping for us prior to our arrival on Christmas Eve - it made the holidays worry free having all our food there and not having to do shopping the minute we arrived. We all rate this home a "5" for sure. Very neat, well arranged for our numbers and the owners are great to work with. Thank you so very much for everything. The Fifield Group from Montana

This was an amazing house for our family vacation. The house was very clean and fully equipped with all the necessary amenities. The spacious upstairs with the ocean view from each room was inviting and the pool was enjoyed every day. We love to go for our daily adventures around the island and this was the perfect location for it. Visiting the volcano, Captain Cooks or the Kohala Coast beaches was an easy drive. We were in walking distance to an amazing snorkle area and my husband and 9 year old son were able to enjoy surfing just down the street. I highly recommend this home to any family for a vacation!

Hale Malihini didn't disappoint, We travelled from Australia with a group of 11 people.(5 children) for the Ironman race. We arrived to find a very clean, well stocked house (there was even fresh fruit left for us) The location was perfect, a short walk to magic sands beach which the children loved, good for body surfing and local turtles make an appearance everyday, (this is also a patrolled beach.) The house has beautiful views and lovely pool. Just down the road ( 5mins in a car) is a fantastic snorkelling beach. We were in Kona for the Ironman race, We drove into town for race activities ( around 8mins) and also rode bike into town, the house is located just off Akaii street which is the main road that the run leg comes down. Getting into town on race day was fine, just allow extra time to get home as there are a few road closures. Nice and quiet location but recommend car to get around The only down side is that you cannot access downstairs from upstairs unless you go outside and around the side, (this is because the house can be rented out separately) but everything else outweighed that issue. Ben an Jan couldn't of been more helpful, quick to return emails and answer any questions Kona is a beautiful place and we managed to do and see a lot of new things, there were things we didn't get to do but plan on returning in the future. We would defiantly recommend staying at this beautiful property.

We had a wonderful time staying at this home, and the ocean view and sound of the waves just a few blocks away were a big bonus! Amazing sunsets, beautiful tropical foliage and a laid back neighborhood were reasons enough to just want to hang out at the house with our friends during our week long trip to Kona. The pool is spacious and fun, and we had many tiki-torch lit dinners outside on the back deck. I definitely recommend this home for anyone vacationing with a large family or group of friends. While there is ample space in common areas to enjoy time together, there are also enough rooms and more secluded areas of the home to break away and nap, catch up on reading or just to relax away from the group. I would jump at the opportunity to reserve this home again, for my next trip to Kona with my friends!

This is the perfect spot for a family vacation, a group outing, or a romantic getaway... Tucked away in a quaint residential neighborhood, only minutes from Magic Sands Beach, Hale Malihin provided our group of 9 a true oasis within paradise. The photographs do not do this beautiful home justice! We enjoyed the home’s many amenities while relaxing by the pool and preparing (and consuming) delightful island meals. This is the only way to travel! I have stayed in many rental homes throughout the years, and Hale Malihin has set the bar quite high for the next. We plan to revisit this home take advantage of its beauty and splendor for many years to come! I absolutely recommend this home! As a side note, the home owners were a pleasure to work with – very responsive and kind. Courtney (Seattle, WA)

My best friend and I treated ourselves to this 11-day trip to the Big Island for our 40th birthdays. Our Australian friends flew in with their two children prior to their inter-island cruise and shared the house with us for 6 days, renting the top unit for their portion of the stay. The home was perfectly suited for our needs, offering a pool (there are LOTS of pool and beach toys in the garage), Magic Sands beach just a short drive away (little legs couldn't quite manage the journey), and downtown Kailua-Kona just a few miled down Ali'i Drive which offers many shopping and dining options. We followed a recommendation by Lonely Planet and visited Teshima's, located a short drive south of Kailua-Kona on Hwy 11 at 79-7251 Mamalahoa Hwy in Kealakekua. It is a family-owned restaurant offering delicious shrimp tempura ~ after one visit, we decided we had to go back again the next day! Also along the Mamalahoa Hwy on the ocean side of the road between Kealakekua and the Kahaluu-Keauhou turn off is a great playground/athletic center. It features a fantastic wood play structure for the keiki in each of us. Another wonderful place to take kids is the space center located at the Kona International Airport. It was amazingly well-done with tons of interactive things for kids of all ages to explore. The home is located on a very quiet cul-de-sac, so you hear the chirping of crickets in the evenings and birds in the morning. The kitchen is well-stocked with a coffee maker (must have Kona coffee every morning), blender, pots-n-pans, dishes, cutlery, and eating utensils. You may want to bring your favorite toilet paper from home, as there was just a very small supply in our place (one 1/2 roll in one of the two bathrooms) when we arrived. There is no access to either the pool or the upstairs unit from the lower unit without going out and around the side and front of the house, or through the garage and using the driveway. One thing we discovered while occupying the lower unit is that every footstep made by people upstairs is audible. If this is unacceptable to you, I would suggest you rent the top floor and not the lower. The upstairs unit is VERY spacious and the master bed/bath combo is fantastic! The house and yard were clean, tidy, and well-maintained, though you should be prepared for geckos and millipedes. I would definitely recommend this home to friends and would seriously consider it for our next visit.
