  • Fantastic Vacation!

"This was absolutely one of the most amazing vacations we have ever taken...mainly due to the staff of Epi and Manuel, who are of Mayan heritage and very proud of it! Epi arranged a snorkeling trip with Patrick at the Sittee River Marina (1/2 mile away with a very nice restaurant), brought us back beer from town, and even washed our vehicle before we left! We rented a car from Belize City and drove the almost 3 hours to Hopkins. The main roads are paved, so the trip was relaxing and we were able to just take in the countryside. Epi greeted us and showed us to our unit, which is rather modest in American standards but completely adequate (stocked with everything we needed). As it turned out, we were the only guests there for the entire 8 days. Therefore, we were fortunate enough to really get to know the staff. Manuel is an official tour guide, so we went on 3 different excursions with him. We hiked Antelope Falls in Mayflower National Park (there is a pristine swimming hole at the TOP of the waterfall--the hike is strenuous, but worth it when you get there!). We drove to Xunantunich, which is a very impressive Mayan ruin. What's visible is amazing, but what's incredible is what's under your feet that's not yet been excavated. Then he took us to his home area of Punta Gorda. It's just a completely different area from Hopkins. He took us to swim in the river, and we witnessed 2 ladies doing their laundry in the river with rocks. It's fascinating and humbling! There are more restaurants than we could possibly eat at in the area. Tina's was the most authentic that we tried (had barracuda and gibnut!). We drove to Plancencia twice. This is a more "touresty" area, but a nice change of pace. Just make sure you find the "sidewalk" on the ocean side of the road. This is where a lot of the shops and restaurants are. My daughter is into geocaching, and we even found a geocache in Placencia! That made her trip. I was so sad for this vacation to end. We had fabulous weather and a fabulous time."

  • Even better than described

"This is a very nice home, right on your own private beach as described. The ocean is perfect for kids because it is only 3-4 feet deep to about 200' out, which meant I felt very confident reading in the hammock on the beach without having to look up to check the kids every 30 seconds. The house is very well equipped with beach chairs, floats, kayaks, hammocks with shade all day right on the water....pretty much everything you need for a perfect vacation. This is also the only house I've ever rented in the tropics with no bugs inside at all, a pleasant surprise. I want to directly address the one poor review as well since it isn't representative of our stay at all. We were an off-season, summer stay and the house was completely fresh and clean, no mildew smell at all even in the bathrooms and towels/linens; and we're very sensitive to mildew. The beds were all very comfortable, the house was spotless, and everything worked. We've stayed around the world in rental homes and this one was the nicest we've stayed in as far as condition of the home, not to mention the location. Also wanted to mention that while we were worried about the Sittee River sand gnats/flies, they were really a non-issue. We ate outside frequently, spent all day on the beach, and sat outside every night without noticing any bugs at all except for the few minutes around sunset. Although not in the control of the owners, potential renters should be aware that not only is internet dial-up slow, it frequently goes out altogether. On average we had internet for about an hour a day, and a random hour at that. If you're really on vacation and just need to check and send emails once a day you'll be fine, but if you're on a working trip and really need reliable internet you may find yourself frustrated, a fact mitigated by the fact that the place is so relaxing. Note that this is a Hopkins wide issue, all the local cafe internets suffered similar slow speeds and spotty availability."

  • 60th Birthday Celebration

"The Habaru House was fantastic. It was clean and very comfortable. The only disappointment about the trip were the mosquitos and the water in the front of the house. Because of the rains, the mosquitos were numerous and the water in front of the house was murky and not made for swimming. Anthony and Gilbert were extremely helpful and accommodating. Lots of adventures and vacationing outside the box."
