Home Away from Home!
Everything about this property is top notch! I have stayed at many VRBOs over the last few years and this beats them all hands down. The communication is fantastic prior to arrival and during the stay too. Beverly gave us wonderful recommendations and tips to maximize our time that I would not have thought of on my own. Upon arrival we were greeted by Beverly herself who had guac, chips, (jalepeno margaritas for mom and dad) and juice for the kiddos waiting for us. After a 9 hour drive that was much appreciated! She recommended a little place that would deliver pizza since it was late and we definitely did not want to cook! The entire place sincerely felt like our home away from home. The owners have literally considered every need you might have on your visit and we wanted for nothing. In fact, my 10 year old forgot his toothbrush and there was a spare in the guest bathroom. The kitchen is stocked with spices, oils, sugar, syrup, foil, ziplock bags, napkins, paper plates, etc. The fridge was even stocked with local beers & sodas for us. Everything you need to cook your own meals is available to you. They left us hiking snacks too, which really came in handy! I mean honestly they treated us like we were family members staying at their home. The backyard was so relaxing. My husband and I got up early every morning to have coffee and watch the sunrise. We all enjoyed watching the birds, especially the hummingbirds, but the most exciting part was the wild aoudad sheep that came to visit us one afternoon! They have a water trough on the other side of the fence and there is alfalfa in a tub that you can use to feed them! It was spectacular to be that close to wildlife. We also saw a buck in the neighbor's yard one evening! The pickleball court was an added bonus for us because we just started learning how to play here at our local YMCA. The fact that you are 2 miles down the road from the state park is the icing on the cake. I also cannot recommend enough doing a horseback ride with Palo Duro Riding Stables, also down the road. A family owned and operated business for the last 50+ years! We have already recommended Nocana Lodge to local family, friends, and neighbors. When we come back (and we will be back) this is the only place we will consider staying! Thank you Beverly and Philip for sharing your home with us!
We had a fantastic stay at Nocona Lodge. The setting of the property was spectacular, you have a great view of the canyon and you are secluded from nearby neighbors. The back patio can't be beat and you are minutes away from the entry of Palo Duro Canyon. Beverly was extremely welcoming and friendly and made sure we had everything we needed for a wonderful trip. Couldn't recommend this enough!
The most relaxing vacation ever in Canyon, TX
This rates as the most relaxing vacation ever where the family truly enjoyed a perfect downtime in Palo Duro Canyon. It's truly the biggest house we have stayed in Palo Duro Canyon. Picturesque, idyllic surroundings in beautiful nature.
Perhaps the highlight was the owner, who was a wonderful, hospitable person, with attention to detail, with a warm welcome and very caring touch. Will come back again for sure.
In short, the best value for your money in Amarillo, Canyon, Palo Duro Canyon.
Thank you for this wonderful experience.
Wonderful location and host!!!
I highly recommend Nocona Lodge! The owner is so helpful and responds quickly to any request. Beverly, the owner, met us when we arrived with a batch of her special margaritas...YUM! She made us homemade guacamole while she was telling us all about the VRBO and history of the canyon area. There are so many books in the VRBO to browse through about the area's history, sites, canyon views, trails and more. The VRBO is stocked to the max! We've stayed at several well stocked VRBO's in the past and this one beats them all. The location just couldn't be better, positioned on the rim of the canyon. The VRBO is a short 5 min. drive to the entrance of Palo Duro State Park. If you can't hike, then take a drive through the canyon. The views are absolutely stunning. Sitting on the back patio in the early evening, enjoying the canyon view and watching the hummingbirds on her feeders was so relaxing. If you are lucky, the Barbary sheep will come to the back fence. She provides alfalfa and corn to feed them. She has a water trough for them just outside the back fence. Very cool!
If you like adventure, I recommend you take a jeep tour with Palo Duro Creek Ranch Jeep Tours located just across from the entrance to the canyon. Our guide was Case and he was great. The ride itself was a blast and we learned so much history about the canyon. You will see spectacular views and rock formations called Hoodoos that you don't see in other parts of the canyon.
On Beverly's recommendation, we also drove through Caprock Canyon which is very different and also stunning. Another huge attraction to Caprock are the free roaming bison throughout the canyon. You can get very close in your car and it's thrilling to see these enormous bison and their calves up close.
We loved it here so much that we can't wait to go back and take the grandkids. We will definitely stay at Nocona Lodge again!! Thank you Beverly. You are the best!!
Amazing location, beautiful area, gracious host, lovely home
The home was fabulous, animals came right up to the back! A super short drive to the park. I've stayed in quite a few homes, but never as well stocked a home as this. We would go back in a heartbeat! Thanks for the hospitality! What a gem!
Beverly and Philip Abshere
About Beverly and Philip Abshere
Phil had a dental practice in Oklahoma City when he met Beverly (surgical PA in Albuquerque) at a military medical conference 1980. Both were Reserve medical officers (Phil--Air National Guard, Beverly--Navy/Marines), with several overseas deployments. With 2 weeks notice of OEF deployment, Phil sold his house and private dental practice in OKC and moved to ABQ. Days prior to his flight for duty in Afghanistan, they were married by Navy/Marine chaplain in a hot air balloon over Rio Grande in ABQ, the "Balloon Capital of the World". Very befitting for former Air Force pilot and paratrooper chaplain. Beverly proudly carried US flag as her "bouquet". Phil's Dad (94 y/o WWII veteran) was the best man, and one of Beverly's 5 Texas sisters was her maid of honor. After deployment, Phil worked in group dental practices in ABQ. Currently employed by Pediatric Dental group called "Smiles for Kids". Beverly continued her surgical PA (Otolaryngology) career at the VAMC ABQ, until her last deployment aboard aircraft carrier (USS Eisenhower) in Persian Gulf.
Beverly and Philip Abshere purchased this Lodge in 2016
Why Beverly and Philip Abshere chose Canyon
Although Beverly grew up in a large, High Plains farm family; she had lived elsewhere during her college/medical training, and then subsequent surgical/military career. When Beverly/Phil/Belinda were visiting their Dad in Amarillo Nursing Home for Father's Day 2015, they rented a cabin in Palo Duro Estates. They were mesmerized by the beauty and tranquility of the area. It was shocking that this "area of heaven" existed in the Texas Panhandle (definitely no homes on the Palo Duro Canyon Rim when Beverly/Belinda were growing up on the windy/flat High Plains!). How fortuitous that another similar property became available 6 months later. Their tenacity was rewarded when they insisted on a realtor showing during the 2015 Christmas Blizzard! Definitely meant to be. What is now known as "Nocona Lodge" was handiwork of a premier Texas builder, who designs his custom homes in the style of famous architect Mary Coulter---organic, rustic, and functional. This spectacular house is more spacious than any other Palo Duro vacation rental. It allows Beverly/Phil to comfortably host Beverly's very large extended family, who are scattered throughout the farms and fields of Amarillo/Lubbock area. With it's fenced backyard, her siblings feel more comfortable with their toddlers not "toppling over the cliff". And the "furbabies" can be sequestered while enjoying their wildlife patrols. It is essentially handicap accessible---a plus for their Dad's wheelchair; and later for twin sister with terminal illness. Now Beverly and Phil share Nocona Lodge with others, but still continue to enjoy. When they travel for a weekend or Holiday from Albuquerque, they prefer to "nest". They've made it their Texas resort, with every amenity imaginable. (However, all personal effects/clothing/pictures removed, so this becomes "your resort"!)
