Alice Howe - a big house with hot tub and cinema for groups to get together in the Lake District.

Alice Howe is a magnificent grade II listed building designed by Augustus AWN Pugin (perhaps more famous for designing the Palace of Westminster) located in the heart of Windermere. Alice Howe, Number 3 The Terrace sleeps 14 in 7 bedrooms with 7 bathrooms. This group accommodation in the Lake District has been awarded 4 stars by Visit Britain. It features a fantastic lounge with huge lush leather Chesterfield sofas all set round an open fire and a dining room which seats 14 around a gorgeous solid oak table.

The house has two kitchens one for prepping and washing up, one for cooking, eating and socialising. The social kitchen has a wood-burning stove and a rustic table where many a late night has been spent with a bottle of wine (or two). Upstairs there are 7 bathrooms, and 7 bathrooms, 5 of which are ensuite.

Outside there is a rear courtyard which is home to a 7-seat hot tub the space has a large table plus a barbecue for alfresco dining. At the front of the house there there is parking for up to 6 cars and access to a fast EV charger located on the maintenance building adjacent to Boston House.. Alice Howe is located in Windermere Village where you'll find a host of restaurants bars and boutique shops. Alice Howe is available to let on its own or along with any combination of our other 5 properties on The Terrace in Windermere sleeping up to a total of 67 guests.

We welcome up to 4 dogs at the property. There is an additional charge per dog, which can be added at check-out.

30th birthday celebration

Alice Howe was a beautiful home for our stay to celebrate our daughter’s 30th birthday. The weekend before Christmas was difficult to book a house for so many people but this was a fantastic place to stay. The location was perfect, very well equipped house with everything you could need for a stay. The cinema room was a hit with everyone as was the hot tub and having a beautiful Christmas tree was a lovely touch a fantastic stay and we will definitely be back

A wonderful family weekend

Had a pre Christmas family gathering at Alice Howe for three nights over the weekend. We have had a wonderful time. The property is fab and it was great for everybody to be able to be in the same house. All the properties in the terrace were occupied but there was no problems with noise levels. The hot tub and the cinema were such a treat. Everyone enjoyed it from great grandmother to grandchildren. The house is in a great location and we were able to pack lots of activities and walks into the weekend. Booths is on the doorstep so brilliant location for food supplies and we also ordered Tesco to be delivered as we arrived. Customer service from Andy before booking was excellent. If you have small children, the fire doors are a bit tricky but I understand the necessity of them due to regulations - if you have little ones, just keep an extra eye on them. My only comment about possible improvement would be that it would be lovely to have some lights around the hot tub but I guess you could take your own. Would recommend in a heartbeat if you are looking for large accommodation for a family/friends gathering.

Our Annual Family Gathering

This beautiful home provides an opportunity for catch ups, rest, a lot of laughter and many memories to be made for wider family from Northern Ireland, Ayrshire, Aberdeenshire and Glasgow. We all love our annual trip. It is really easy to get in touch with the owners if we ever need anything. Thank you!

Great weekend

We had a fantastic weekend at Alice Howe. Andy and Barbara were incredibly helpful on the run up by answering all of the questions we had as we were booking for a large group (26) across two houses. The house had everything we could have needed and the outdoor space was perfect for enjoying the sun. The location was perfect and was only a short walk away from shops, restaurants and the lake. We would definitely return and would recommend this property to anyone looking to host a family gathering or weekend away with friends.

Perfect!

Alice Howe is a lovely large house with everything & more you could need for your holiday. We are a party of 4 couples, the bedrooms with en-suites worked well for us all. The house was spotless, all the rooms are really tastefully decorated. After a day exploring the many attractions we spent a lot of time relaxing in the garden & the lovely hot tub. We even watched a movie in the cinema room which is brilliant! Location of the house couldn’t be better. There’s a supermarket shops cafes bars & restaurants just a short walk away in Windermere & Bowness. Communication with the owners was excellent from start to finish. We had such a great time we’ve already booked to return next year! Thankyou for a lovely holiday.

Overall good but poor service

The rooms were clean and well maintained. When we arrived one cot was faulty, and the manager quickly replaced it, which was appreciated. Niggles were first that the tumble dryer never worked. I contacted the owner on the Wednesday only to be told that it would be dealt with when we left on Friday. Second the hot tub was supposed to be maintained daily. On the Wednesday I reported that the water was cloudy, and no one had seen the maintenance team. The next day they turned up and immedistely drained the water and put in fresh. This would not have been necessary had they visited daily. The state of the water meant we were not inclined to use the hot tub by mid week. The bedrooms are set up for parties of single people which didnt lend itself to families. These points aside we enjoyed the stay despite a very rainy week.

It was the perfect place for us as a family, all rooms were fantastic and the facilities were ideal.

We would 100% stay again, thank you for making a great weekend perfect!! The weather we had the weekend we stayed was amazing, so we had the benefit of the back garden an the front both of which were used by all.

Excellent stay at Alice Howe

Alice Howe is a wonderful property. We stayed as a group of 12 and had a fantastic time. The location was superb, a short walk into Windermere and Bowness and we also included a walk up Orrest Head. Accomodation was clean and had all of the equipment required. Very homely, the cinema room is a great touch and the hot tub is wonderful. Hosts were very responsive to all queries and extremely helpful. Also loved the picture hooks to hang banners on! Fantastic property, highly recommend. I hope to return in the future.

Perfect location for a family celebration

We stayed as an extended family group for one week to celebrate a big birthday. The property was spacious enough for us all. The location was close to all amenities. Walk up Orest Head, railway and buses were excellent ideal for exploring the area without using your car..The property was well fitted out with comfy beds and en-suites ideal for us and our dogs. Good local restaurants.

LOVELY STAY

We where a group of 14 ladies aged 59 - 82 celebrating one of the groups up and coming 60th birthday. The house was spacious enough for us all and accommodated all our needs. We would definitely recommend it to family and friends. Great location too.

50th birthday celebrated in style with friends and family, outstanding place and would defo return

Beautiful residence caters for all, basics supplied on arrival tea, coffee etc. Daily checks on the hot tub . In the heart of the village so close to everything. Extremely happy with our stay to celebrate with family and friends for a milestone birthday .

Amazing property

What a fabulous house and great location! Alice Howe had everything we needed and was spotless. The hot tub and cinema room were excellent additions and there was plenty of seating in the living room, dining room and kitchen for the 12 of us. Everything was lovely! As always. We will be back in 2026 defenitily! The location and the possibilities you have from there are sensentional! It doesn`t matter whether you want to go hiking, shopping, sailing or visit other wonderful places. Nothing is impossible.

ALice Howe Cottage Excellent Stay

I was looking for a cottage to rent for my Daughters Hen party in Windermere with easy access to motorways and Railway and what a perfect location this was. Communication prior to arrival was excellent advising on checkin details and safety info. The cottage is absolutely beautiful stunning location, spotlessly clean and tidy. Love the furnishings and the character of this cottage , two large kitchens with everything we needed for the stay and our private chef to cook for 13 of us , which a lot of places do not cater for this. Every bedroom was spacious and we loved the 2 bedrooms with the four poster beds. There is a lovely seating area outside and hot tub which is undercover, again catering for the weather and lovely seating area at the front of the house. Plenty of parking again ideal for larger groups Loved every minute of this few days break and can 100% recommend Alice Howe Cottage..

Excellent cottage in Windermere!!!

Great cottage in an ideal location. It's spacious and has all the facilities and amenities, including WiFi, TVs, and a cinema theatre. The hot tub is included in the price. All the facilities mentioned in the booking description were available. More importantly, a lady from customer service called a few hours before check-in to ensure our comfort. Will definitely book again. It would have been better if there hadn't been a smell in the kitchen when we first opened it. After opening the window for a few hours, the smell went away.

A great stay!

We stayed in July 2024 as a group of 13 (age range was teenagers to adults) + 2 dogs. Location is great with a good range of shops, restaurants and bars within walking distance from the house and main attractions of Windermere a short drive away. 5 en-suite bathrooms were much appreciated given we were 4 separate families. Also a table we could all sit at at the same time also fab! Hot tub also appreciated!

Fabulous Property

The property is a superb choice for a large group, with ample space and facilities. The condition of the property and the furniture, equipment, cooking and crockery etc. is all excellent with everything needed to cater for a large group. All members of our group loved the stay at the property, and location wise it is perfect with excellent parking arrangements. The only thing I would recommend is to ensure you take washing-up items i.e. washing-up liquid, a dishcloth, pan scrubber etc. as these are not provided and a trip to the supermarket will be required to ensure you are able to keep all of the crockery etc. clean.
