About Jon Varsano

Lauren and Jon Varsano, 2009

Jon Varsano purchased this house in 1998

Why Jon Varsano chose Big Bear

We bought our house so that we could get out of the hustle bustle in Los Angeles to be close with nature. Since buying the place we have a couple of kids who enjoy coming up to the house. We wanted a place up in the mountains for skiing, hiking, and relaxation.

What makes this house unique

Yes we did! It was amazing! It snowed Saturday night and it was really cold! It was great to use the hot tub.

Reviews

Relax and enjoy all the amenities Varsano Villa has to offer.

VRBO Bear stayed here

Jul 23, 2016

The charming Varsano Villa provided a great summer getaway! We arrived and were delighted to see a beautiful wrap around porch with chairs and a swing, the perfect place for doing what bears do best, relaxing! The porch led us to the back deck complete with a gas grill and hot tub – we could hardly wait to dip our tired paws. As we explored the inside of our rustic themed retreat, we found a relaxing living room complete with two full sized couches, an inviting fireplace, and a wall mounted flat screen TV – home away from home. The decorative bathrooms were clean and well equipped. The kitchen had everything making it a favorite location to hang out. The master bedroom has a comfortable king size bed and the second bedroom was complete with a queen bed, bunk beds, a TV (including video games). Next time, we will bring the cubs! The owner provided a plethora of information on the local amenities and activities. This cozy gem is a very short drive to the quaint town of Big Bear where there are great restaurants, breweries, shops and nightlife. Equally as accessible were hiking trails, kayaking and swimming, and a farmer’s market to enjoy local produce and crafts. The locals were wonderful too providing great services like zip lining, fly fishing and gold mining! If you are looking for a relaxing getaway that is close to outdoor adventure, then look no further!

Not Clean, And You Are On Your Own To Make It Right

  • 1 of 5

We had good time with friends, but unfortunately, the cabin was dirty, filthy, and not well maintained.

First we entered the cabin. It smelled very stale and found that the toilet was dirty- as in obvious traces of human waste on the seat. So, we opened all the windows and then cleaned both toilets and sinks. Two sofas were badly worn, stained and dirty. We covered them with blankets for protection. The furniture was dusty and there were sunflower seed shells on the floor next to the living room dirty upholstered chair. The carpet is old and needs cleaning badly. The kitchen was okay, but overall a deep cleaning is needed throughout the cabin. Outside conditions were worn, dry, having lost all finish... The jacuzzi while clean by appearance, was so over-chlorinated that it burned your eyes just to open the cover so we did not get in it.

The grill had very little fuel, so the owner told US to call the care taker. The wi-fi did not work, so the owner told US to call Spectrum for help, as if we (1) know his account info,(2) drove three hours to get on the phone to fix the deficiencies of his property.

Basically, this COULD be a nice, pleasant cabin, but the owner doesn't seem to have the understanding that by listing the property for short term vacation use, he is not renting for residence, but rather he is in the hospitality business...

I hope this review will be taken positively for his awareness so he can turn the place around.

Overall ok but with some problems

  • 3 of 5

Cons- heater malfunctioned requiring me to get up multiple times at night to relight it to keep my kids from freezing. The house is old, outdated and dark.(for the price you get what you pay for so not too much hart burn here)

Pros- good value, good location, hot tub was great.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry that you had problems with the heater, but we did dispatch a service technician as soon as we were notified of the issue. The heater unit has been replaced and is in good working order now.

Needs a deep clean

  • 3 of 5

I think the cleaning fee on this place is hard to wrap my head around. There was a lot of dust and webs and it really could use a deep clean. It could also use more lights. Otherwise, I feel you get what you pay for and this was a low price compared to many others available the weekend I stayed. Unfortunately the hot tub was not working and we later found out that the breaker just needed reset, but after we already called it a night.

Owner's Response: Thank you for letting us know about the dust. We have made our managment company aware of this issue. And they promise to deep clean the place more often.

Good location. Dated, but still a good experience.

Grill was great. Front left burner of the stove does not work and poker for fireplace broke off. Other than those minor things, we enjoyed our stay.

Needs some upgrades/repairs

  • 3 of 5

Ok stay but oven didn't work, table was broken and could use some cleaning. Also I wish we would have known about the fire wood charge and we would have brought our own. $20 for a small pile of firewood is a bit high. You should note that charge in the listing.
