You are invited to visit our hobby farm and stay in an open, airy, well-appointed one-bedroom apartment inside an Amish-built barn. In our rural area, the call of songbirds or lowing of cows is the loudest thing you will hear. Our property is completely solar-powered, with our own array of 39 solar panels on the roof of the barn. We provide a fully stocked kitchen for your breakfast, including oatmeal, english muffins, yogurt, butter, coffee and tea, and, of course, fresh eggs from our chickens. All nationalities/ LGBTQ/ all humans welcome! We have a small pool on site and are in a great location between the Adirondack Mountains, St. Lawrence River, and the Thousand Islands region.
Our brand-new apartment is located on the second floor of our Amish-built barn. The front door and wood porch lead into a large foyer where you can leave your shoes and coats. Walk upstairs and you've got an open floor plan with amazing views of the countryside from decks on both the front and rear of the barn. The very large barn-width rear deck is the place to be to watch the sunset on warm evenings, while you scan the meadow for white-tailed deer, porcupine, and coyote, while listening to the meadowlarks and savannah sparrows.
Inside the space, we offer one bedroom with a new Tuft and Needle queen-size bed, plus two more sleeping areas in shared space. The very large three-piece couch easily sleeps two adults, and the twin futon can sleep a small adult or child. Our kitchen has a two-burner electric cooktop, toaster oven, microwave oven, coffee maker, and small fridge/ freezer for your pleasure, plus a small kitchen table as well as bar seating. We love the locally-cut white pine butcher block counter top! The open floor plan with exposed beams is pleasing to the eye, and our ceramic tile shower stall will make you linger. Most of the decorations in the apartment come from our travels in South and Central America, East Africa, and Indonesia.
The upstairs guest space and foyer are entirely private. We are happy to give you a tour of our farm and animal areas. In the summer and fall, please feel free to wander through the large vegetable garden.
We live on-site and will be doing what we do on any given day, including farm animal care. We are happy to orient you to the area, show you the amazing views and talk about local wildlife and village life, or give you a tour of our farm.
Our home is close to wonderful sites for adventure, in every season. In the winter, use your cross-country skis on the St. Lawrence University golf course right in the village of Canton, or go into the Adirondacks for a skiing or snowshoeing adventure. In the summer, there are miles of rivers and lakes to explore by canoe and kayak. We are close to the St. Lawrence River and welcome those competing in the summer Bassmaster Fishing Tournaments.
Please note there are animals on site, and you may hear chickens, goats, and cows during your stay, but never a train.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

We greatly enjoyed our stay. The fresh eggs from the chickens were amazing. The host was always available when we needed her. Our visit was very peaceful. The property was clean and very inviting. The decor was fun to admire. The host provided some hiking suggestions that we were able to experience.
Visited St Lawrence county for a wedding, was a wonderful VRBO and experience. Hosts were fantastic and property was beautiful! Will definitely book this property again when visiting the north country.
The location was beautiful and the property exactly as described. Hosts were incredibly responsive and friendly. Fresh eggs were amazing. Came for a college visit, we will be back if he ends up at one of the local colleges!
We had a wonderful visit and enjoyed our stay! A big thank you for going the extra mile and providing fresh farm eggs for breakfast and cream for our coffee! What a nice unexpected treat. We wish we could have stayed longer in order to enjoy the beautiful views and those awesome chickens and goats!
This spacious guest house on the farm overlooks the back field with lots of room for lounging, watching the deer and wildlife, and relaxing. The hosts were welcoming, friendly and accomdating, and this is extremely convenient to downtown Canton and the University. Highly recommend.
This was perfect for our college visit to St Laurence. I accidentally selected 2 guests instead of 4 and the host was very accommodating. They introduced us to the goats and the chickens. Thanks so much for having us.
We stayed for two nights during homecoming for SUNY Canton. It was a girls trip to see our freshman play volleyball and Susan went above and beyond to make our stay both comfortable and memorable. The home is charming, clean and comfortable. We had farm fresh eggs from the host’s very own chickens. The host left us everything we needed to make eggs on English muffins. We had fresh and delicious coffee and we appreciated the butter and extras in the cabinet. The farm animals were a huge bonus for our 8 year old. We had the most memorable trip and will be returning often in the next 4 years.
Great spot for dropping of son at St. Lawrence. Centrally located. Quiet. Farm like atmosphere. Clean & Organized.
Could use a few technology upgrades.
Thank you. We will be back.
It was a perfect stay for 4 family members attending our daughter’s SLU graduation!
The fresh eggs from their chickens was a nice bonus, along with breakfast items given to us to prepare. The goats, chickens, and cats were fun to admire, especially the kitty named Zero! We wanted to take him home.
There is plenty of space. My husband and I gave my sister and brother in law the bedroom and we sleep on the sofa that sections into a bed. I brought a blowup mattress in case, but the sofa bed worked out great and was very comfortable!
Susan and her husband are lovingly people and extremely accommodating! Thank you for making our special weekend great!😊
Sue and Fernando are great hosts and provide a perfect country guest house for those seeking time away in beauty of nature. The space is super clean and so welcoming. Both decks give you a wonderful view of the neighboring farms. We spent most of our time relaxing on the back deck and got to see coyotes and deer, eagles and hawks, the resident red squirrels who were a blast to watch and knock out skies. We also loved their super sweet puppy and the goats and chicken who live in the barn. Sue provided us with information about swimming holes and local water falls, as well as good places to shop and visit. Fernando cooked us a delicious meal (vegetarian) - his food and the view made for a perfect romantic Saturday night. Our experience was exactly what we were looking for. Thank you Sue and Fernando for a terrific vacation.
Hosts were extremely communicative and helpful. Evenings on the deck were gorgeous (bring bug spray though). Beautiful sunsets and view. Animals charming. Great place if you are visiting SLU as it is only a few miles away.
We had a very peaceful stay. The property is very pretty and really clean. The owners were extremely nice and accommodating . I highly recommend this rental.
Comfortable place far enough away from bustle of Route 11 but close to local universities for visits. Peaceful farmland behind the property and well-appointed open floor plan made our stay comfortable. Excellent owner communication.
We loved our time at the Waterman Hill Guesthouse! We needed a reset button from daily life and this was it! We were lucky enough to spend time with the animals and the host family and also get to the ADKs for some hiking. The host family is absolutely lovely and let us help (and eat from!) the garden and have a campfire and marshmallows at night. Perfect place for kids to enjoy being kids! Beautiful location for exploring the North Country. Hope to enjoy another stay here in the future.
Great place and location with Abbreviated kitchen is best for non-cookers
Susan the hostess is great, the bedding and master bed were super comfortable. The view out the back was amazing. They had baby goats that were very fun, especially if you had little kids in your group.
For people who don’t usually cook and eat in while traveling the kitchen is totally fine. My error was not reading and paying close enough attention to the details- due to a food allergy we normally cook full meals and eat in, which was not really possible. They do offer great dinners which probably could have accommodated the allergy issue had we inquired.
This place was big enough for 5 people but is very comfortable and convenient. The owner is spectacular! The best host we have ever had! From the breakfasts to the location, roosters, goats, just a wonderful country experience!!

About the host
Hosted by Susan K Willson
I am a bird biologist and professor at St. Lawrence University. My husband Fernando and I own and live here with our daughter Gigi. Fernando has been involved in all aspects of the construction on the new apartment you will stay in- he is a salsa music DJ, professional chef, and handyman in his spare time. We have both spent lots of time outside of the US, as Fernando is originally from Ecuador, and I have worked in Latin America as an ecologist for over two decades. We are multicultural and bilingual, and welcome people from everywhere, as we encourage human diversity here in the North Country. We welcome all religions, nationalities, genders, LGBTQ, and skin colors here!
Why they chose this property
Absolutely stunning views of the back 60 acre meadow and wetland. We regularly have deer, wild turkeys, coyotes and foxes passing through the meadow, and have also observed black bear, trumpeter swans, and sandhill cranes!
What makes this property unique
Take some time to explore our beautiful garden for Tithonia flowers, heirloom tomatoes, and red raspberries. Have you ever held a chicken? Gigi can show you how. Looking for some goat yoga? Go lay out on the grass with our fabulous Nubian goats!
