Why Lynn Grady chose Maalaea

We chose Makani A Kai because of its central loction, the gorgeous view from the lanai and the lawn in front and because of the beauty and Hawaiin feel of the condo itself. Over the years we have added Hawaiian art work, bedding and floral arrangements. We want to feel like we are Maui when we are here and are sure you do too. We also enjoy the privacy of our beach. On a 'busy' day there might be 10 other swimmers or boogie boarders! It's quiet and secluded yet if you want to be part of the crowd, you re only 10 to 20 minutes from anywhere you want to go!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Aloha Lynn, Hi as you probably may or may not remember we just finished our stay at your home in Maui. Lynn it was wonderful! I'm not one who usually takes a "chance" on unknown accomodations, however you were true to your word. Your home is lovely, well positioned and the grounds were great. To be honest I am selfishly reluctant to tell others about the best kept secret in the "Hawaiian Islands". This was the best vacation I have had. Mahalo.

Loved this Condo!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this unit for the first week of our two week Maui holiday. I loved that the condo complex was right on the beach, which made for nice sunset walks, turtle and whale watching, plus some nifty snorkelling when the waves aren't too rough. The area is one of the quieter neighbourhoods; No big resorts or clubs are nearby to cause noise or traffic, and the public park right beside the unit was quiet as well.

Being centrally located in Maalaea is handy for those who want to explore; you can head west to Lahaina for shopping/museums, take the road to Hana, drive up to Haleakala, or head south to La Perouse Bay. Close by the condo, within walking distance, is the Maalaea harbour, which features the Maui Ocean center, and where several snorkelling, whale watching and fishing tours depart daily. A short drive north will take you to the Maui Tropical plantation/zip line, Iao Valley, or into Kahului/Wailuku for grocery shopping.

The condo is well appointed, with pretty much every kitchen item you'll need. The fridge freezer has a built in icemaker, which saves having to buy bagged ice. The main floor closet has beach items like an umbrella and boogie boards, and portable coolers for going on adventures around the island. We also found hand soap, shampoo, and a hair dryer in the bathrooms, which not all condos provide.

I love the tropical décor, and the unit was just a nice size for us four travelling as two couples. The bedroom upstairs has its own bath, which is convenient and gave more privacy.

About the only nitpicks/traveller's warnings I can think of are rather minor:

- the kitchen is so well stocked, that there is limited dry goods storage. You may have to do some creative shuffling if you don't want to leave stuff on the counter tops.

- as it's centrally located, the airport flyways can be directly overhead depending on the wind direction

- there WILL be ants. This is a tropical island, so this is unavoidable. (other than a penthouse condo, I've found them in ALL my tropical accommodations.) Keep all your open goods in the fridge and make sure to IMMEDIATELY clean up anything you drop/spill.

***A special shout out goes to our property owner and manager; Lynn was very accommodating with our booking arrangements, and Cindy made special provision for our group's chemical sensitivities, going so far as to purchase/launder the linens in the detergent I use at home. Thank you for your help, ladies, and we hope to return to Maui someday soon!

Dirty Bathrooms, Broken Appliances and Cantankerous Staff

  • 1 of 5

This VRBO is conveniently located in the center of Maui, providing easy access to the rest of the island. The keyless entry system makes for a worry-free entry to/departure from the property. The top room has its own bathroom and is a loft, so privacy should not be expected. The bathroom's toilet is right up against the wall, which forces you to sit at an awkward angle to avoid rubbing your left thigh against it. There is no shower curtain or door, but a small towel was provided to catch any water after showering.

The bedroom in the bottom floor has two twin-sized beds and can fit one person each. If your party has more than 04 people, the rest will have to sleep on the sofa bed. We had a party of 06 and required the sofa bed. Unfortunately, it was very difficult to open between two adults and was very uncomfortable. The two kids sleeping there opted to sleep on the couch, so we just covered it with extra bedsheets every evening.

Right before arriving, the property manager informed us a technician was scheduled to arrive the next morning to repair the microwave; this turned out to be a non-issue and was promptly resolved at 9AM next day. The bathrooms and sink, however, were a different story. The toilet in both bathrooms were broken when we arrived, and the kitchen faucet was leaking into the cabinets below. Although the property manager was notified, it took about 03 days to resolve, making bathroom visits very unpleasant for everyone. The top bathroom's shower was full of black grime and mildew. The bottom bathroom was not as grimy, but the towels in the basket were dusty and there was a live roach between them. After 14+ hours traveling and looking forward to a shower, we instead found ourselves purchasing Chlorox to scrub the showers and new towels.

The property manager visited the unit after being informed of the issues. I was surprised to find her indignant because we did not clean up the kitchen sink's water, especially after being told not to attempt to repair anything ourselves; it's even in the visitor book by the kitchen. Furthermore, after asking for additional toilet paper and towels, she was quick to inform us the 04 rolls provided to our party (03 kids/03 adults for 10 days) should be sufficient and no additional towels would be provided. Perhaps my understanding of "hospitality" is different. Regardless, as a paying customer there is a certain level of expectation that comes with renting a property.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately this guest submitted his review after all of his deposit was not returned due to the condition he left the condo in - extra cleaning and ruined linens. This rental was a back to back reservation and the first guest did not report that the toilets were running or that the sink was leaking. When the housekeeper arrived both were discovered and reported immediately along with a concern that something metal had been put into the microwave and just to be sure a plumber and an electrician were called. The toilets were not broken merely “running” while annoying yes, generally not something to “make bathroom visits unpleasant”. It did take 2 days to get the plumber out to make the repairs. That happens, especially on our fair island! As to the toilet paper, this is a condo not a hotel. Every bathroom has one on and 2 spares to get you started. It’s not meant to last the whole stay. As to the shower upstairs, it’s a European shower. That’s how it is designed and does not splash water outside the tiles! The condo is clearly advertised as a large loft bedroom and a second bedroom with two twin beds - and yes this usually means that only one person fits on the bed!! This wouldn’t be a problem if you truly came with the number of people you indicated. The towels had all just been freshly washed that day so I don’t understand how they could have been dirty. As for the bug, it is the tropics and they do visit on occasion. I do appreciate you letting me know that the couch was stiff however. With the humidity it needs WD 40 on occasion so I will have that seen to right away as well.

This VRBO was not very clean and in some disrepair with old worn out mattresses. Don’t stay here.

  • 1 of 5

This VRBO was advertised as having brand new mattresses. Which the owner confirmed again on the telephone with me prior to our arrival. My elderly parents, my sister and my girlfriend and I couldn’t believe how uncomfortable the beds were. No one could sleep more than a 1-2, maybe 3 hours at a time, and we were all waking up sore. It was so awful. We washed the sheets half way through our 12 night stay and found the mattresses were purchased in 2012 and 2004. I took photos of everything. There was old urine stains on one of the mattress pads. The carpets were dirty and stained. The shower handle comes off in your hand and the shower head is coming out of the wall. The patio door shakes back and forth in its tracks with the wind and a real struggle to open and close because it is so rusty. The upstairs sink has no drain stop, just a hole. There was no dishwasher or laundry soap, there was no paper towel or extra toilet paper. What the television lacked in quality and inches was made up for in the 8 remotes left out for us? When we arrived I found sand and a piece of LEGO under the couch and 2 Cheezies under the bed. The baseboards looked like they had never been wiped down. This condo complex is Oceanfront but this unit is at the back of the complex with an excellent view of the public parking lot next door with partial view of the ocean. Commercial airplanes fly overhead several times a day and night. Many of these issues would not be enough to ruin a vacation but the fact that no one in my family had one decent night of sleep and every single one of us woke up aching is absolutely unacceptable. The fact that the owner lied to me right on the phone regarding new mattresses is incredible. The fact that we paid so much for this experience makes me feel ill.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry to hear that there were issues with this stay. However, at no time did this guest ever contact me or my on island manager with any problems or even a hint of an issue. Between Cindy, my on island manager and myself, we pride ourselves on providing full customer service for all of our guests. Had we known of any of the issues we would have been out immediately to take care of any problems or sent the appropriate trade person. There is always a basic supply of toilet paper, paper towels and dishwashing soap. Laundry detergent is not provided. As to the beds, they are firm mattresses. However at no time did this guest and I ever discuss their age. I would have remembered that conversation for it being unusual. All of the linens are washed between every guest and old or worn out replaced. I will have the shower, sink and sliding glass door looked at immediately. It’s unfortunate that the guest did not call for assistance as she was provided with two numbers for just such purposes.

The property was quiet and beautiful. We were able to settle in and swim with turtles that same evening. The location was perfect, central to the island making it so convenient.
