About this property

Make lifelong memories at this New England Quintessential Country Getaway

This beautiful 1905 New England Cottage, that was once a local bakery, is the perfect location to enjoy Connecticut, fun local excursions and activities. Hiking trails are around the corner, and a lake surrounded by rolling, golden hills is 3 minutes down the road, perfect for kayaking. So come and relax, reconnect with nature, or do both! A complimentary, chilled bottle of Prosecco will be waiting for you!

This fully remodeled, light filled, 1900 sqft home includes two working fireplaces, a large Great room, spacious living, dining, and sleeping areas, a dedicated office space, a laundry room, a patio, and a back deck. Its lay-out is convenient, with two bedrooms 2 steps up from the main floor. The bedrooms feature fresh, European style bedding. The twin beds downstairs have new green tea-infused mattresses, the sheets are manufactured by women-owned businesses, and the guest toiletries are all natural and infused with essential oils. Every bedroom has beautiful views of the park-like grounds. The fully equipped, large kitchen with spacious dining area makes it fun to cook and gather, and the private back deck and small front patio are perfect for morning breakfast and evening cocktails! There is fast WiFi and a smart TV in the living room, and, just in case you want to disconnect from it all, a great selection of board games and puzzles, books and magazines. There is also a basket with arts and crafts activities for children. Two functioning fireplaces, one in the kitchen and one in the living room, will bring a special ambiance to your evenings. To start you off, we will supply one deck box full of wood. After that, you are free to collect wood from the property yourself.

(There are also baby supplies, such as a crib, a bassinet, a highchair, and a pack & play.)

This New England Cape sits on what was once a sheep farm. The family who owned the land 200 years ago held Dorset sheep, hence the property's name, and as you explore the area, you will see street names that reflect the history of the property. The barn of the main house still has the troughs where they would feed the animals. At one point, the guest house was a local bakery, and an oven in the basement is witness to that venture. The entire property is surrounded by a wooded Land Reserve, ensuring privacy. We have deer, wild turkeys, and hawks that regularly visit our grounds, and from time to time a red fox will cross the property.

The Center of Brookfield and neighboring towns with their restaurants are between a 5- and 15-minute drive away. Kent Falls, the towns of Kent and Litchfield, at the foot of the Berkshire mountains, are a scenic 40-50 minutes away. Other charming towns close to us (within a 15-mile radius) include Newtown, Bridgewater, Roxbury, and New Milford. There are many restaurants, shops, and art galleries around. The Elephant's Trunk, the famous flea market held on Sundays in New Milford from May to October, is a 10-minute drive away.

We live in the main house on the property, and we will leave you as much privacy as you desire. We are always happy to guide you to our favorite local eateries, the hiking trails, access to the lake, and other local activities.

We are multi-lingual, and apart from English, speak Dutch, French, Swedish, and German.

I was born and raised in The Netherlands, and moved to the USA in 1985, to earn my MBA degree from the Darden School of Business in Charlottesville, Virginia. After my studies, I worked on Wall Street for 4 years, and in 1991 moved to Paris with my French husband. I was a professor of Business English there and thoroughly enjoyed teaching. After 6 years in the city of light, and the birth of our oldest daughter, our family moved to Stockholm, Sweden. Our second daughter was born there, and the family enjoyed the natural beauty and people there very much. However, we always wanted to introduce our children to the beauty of the American landscape and the generosity of the American people and so, when an opportunity presented itself, our family packed up and settled in the United States. First in Tennessee, then Alabama, and finally in Connecticut, where we have been living for the past 12 years. I love the intense beauty of all the seasons in New England, the proximity to New York City, my old stomping ground, and the quiet country life, where you can stroll through quaint little towns, buy your produce and eggs at local farms and hike up to waterfalls and through beautiful natural parks. I am excited to be able to share all that New England beauty through my property and hopes that you will have many beautiful experiences and create lifelong memories there.

Why they chose this property

This property is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind, historical home, which has been fully refurbished in 2009. It is surrounded by stone walls and trees, and offers a lovely, private setting to enjoy nature, or to just relax. It is 5 minutes away from the I-84, about 80 minutes from New York City. The house is fully furnished and equipped with anything you might need for your stay: from pots and pans in the kitchen to a match-ready open fire and wood supply in the winter. The three comfortable bedrooms are tastefully decorated: there's is the American room, the French room, and the Nordic room, reflecting our family's life in different parts of the world. The cottage is set on 4 acres of park-like grounds, which you are free to explore. There are kids' bikes in the basement, and we have two 1-person kayaks you can take to the lake which is about 2 minutes down the road by car. Many beautiful hiking trails are a stone's throw from the house. Nearby, you can visit many quaint New England towns, with fabulous restaurants, art galleries, antique shops, museums, and other attractions. There is something to do for everyone!

What makes this property unique

The cottage provides a very relaxing environment, where you can truly leave everyday life behind and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature and spend quality time with your family or friends.

My ultimate goal is to create a space where you can make lifelong memories for your family and friends.
