Why Wendy Simpson chose Capestang

On the outskirts of Capestang, Le a Petit Saint Nazaire is a former wine growers residence surrounded by vineyards.

Served by Beziers, Carcassonne, Montpellier and Perpignan airports, all within an hours reach. Capestang is a thriving village with a town square which holds a bustling twice weekly market. It is dominated by a 14th century church. Situated on the Canal du Midi, now a designated world heritage site. Ideally placed with the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean to the South and the Regional Park of Haut Languedoc to the North.

Welcoming, helpful hosts and clean, well presented property

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous stay at Le Petit Saint Nazaire and cannot recommend it highly enough. We arrived late in the evening but Wendy and Pat were ready to welcome us and show us what we needed to know before the morning. Wendy and Pat had arranged a fantastic welcome gift of wine, bread, cheese, fruit and milk which was a godsend when arriving so late.

The gites are lovely and the kitchen is well stocked with equipment and utensils that you might need. Wendy and Pat were also keen to help with equipment we might need for our 2 year old, providing stair gates, a high chair and a bed guard for us to use.

Our children are 2 and 7 and they loved the pool and garden. Wendy and Pat have worked hard to produce a beautiful garden that is an absolute pleasure to spend time in. The climbing frame, slide, little house and toys kept the children amused when they were not swimming in the pool. There are tables and chairs in various places around the garden so you can sit in the sun or shade, whatever your preference, at different times of the day. There are lovely spots where you can appreciate the sunrise over the fields of sunflowers or the sunset over the vineyards.

The pool was perfect on hot days and there were lots of inflatables for the children to play with. In the evening, when the lights came on, it was stunning to sit outside.

Wendy and Pat are there to answer any questions you might have and gave us some really helpful information about places to visit. We had a lovely time visiting the incredible Carcassone, a beach day at Sérignan Plage and a day swimming and paddling at Bize-Minervois.

My husband is a keen road cyclist and enjoyed several rides around the area.

We hope to go back in the future and still have so much to do and see. We all absolutely loved our stay and look forward to seeing Wendy and Pat again soon.

Fully equipped comfortable base for exploring the region

  • 5 of 5

The gites are situated adjacent to the owner's (Wendy and Pat) house, about 3 km south of Capestang. On arrival, Wendy offered us the choice of either gite - it was a difficult choice as both are delightful, very comfortable, and fully equipped; we opted for the one Wendy had prepared to cause least upheaval. Out gite was spotlessly clean, with an ample relaxation area (with choice of British or French TV!), separate dining area, and a sizeable, fully equipped - and I mean fully! - kitchen area. Upstairs are two nicely sized bedrooms with great views, comfortable beds, and ample hanging/drawer space; the modern bathroom is also found on this floor. Outside, to the front is the entrance drive with ample parking; to the rear, there is a personal alfresco dining table just outside, but also many more to choose from dotted around the large garden. The pool is perfect for cooling off on the typical hot days from May to September - and just as nice to lounge around soaking up the sun.

The whole setting is completely rural, with fantastic distant views all around.

Wendy and Pat are the most delightful hosts, very friendly, informative, and helpful - on arrival, we found that Wendy had provided bread, milk, tea, sugar, biscuits, cheese, and a bottle of a superb wine; living next door, it was reassuring to know there was always help on hand if necessary, but otherwise, they were both completely low profile.

We stayed for a week towards the end of October - for a change, we didn't want the usual hot, sunny, pool-dipping, lounger-reclining sort of holiday, we wanted cooler weather to explore the region thoroughly. Nevertheless, we still enjoyed warm, sunny days, and visited several very interesting historical sites, and, of course, the various seaside resorts. That's another great thing about the location - just far enough away to feel completely rural, but only 30 minutes drive from the coast, 20 minutes from Narbonne, 10 minutes to Capestang, and 5 minutes to Lidl!

All in all, we had a really wonderful stay and can thoroughly recommend either gite to families or couples who can enjoy a lazy, relaxing holiday around the pool, or use the stay as a base for touring the region - or a bit of both.

A gem of a Gite

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week at Le Petit St Nazaire and enjoyed every minute. When we arrived on a Monday afternoon, Wendy and Pat were there to greet us and made us feel very welcome indeed. The Gite was airy and spacious and had all mod cons. There was ample parking in front of the house and the door to the rear lead to our private patio area and on into the lovely garden and pool. What not to like?-!

During our stay, we went out each day visiting vineyards and nearby places of interest (of which there are many) and would return home, as we liked to call the gite, to relax and share a glass or two of wine. Dispite the proximity of the busy road, the evenings were quiet events and we were able to enjoy sitting outside and enjoying the view. Our neighbours in the next door gite were delightful and also two friends joined us for a few nights in the spare bedroom which worked well. This was aided by the fact the the loo was separate from the bathroom and directly across from it.

A newly built Lidl with a fantastic wine section is just a few minutes drive away as was the Intermarche which had the edge foodwise. Capestang is a pretty old town with several restaurants to look out for, and of course the Canal du Midi (the main reason we chose Capestang) is within walking distance from the centre of town (or you can park up over the bridge) and walk or bike along the canal path. Alongside the canal there is just one bar/restaurant and this is reasonably priced and gives you a good view at the passing boats.

The Gite and Capestang is well placed to visit Carcassonne, Cather ruins, Beziers and Narbonne both of whom have long sandy beaches. If you are a wine buff then there are several domaines you can visit in particular Chateau Perdiguier outside Maraussan.

Debbie and Petes Holiday Sept 2017

  • 5 of 5

We arrived to a warm welcome from Wendy and Pat. The pictures on the computer do not do the gite and gardens justice. There are little tables around the garden so you can sit in the sun or in the shade, to eat or read and enjoy a nice glass of wine. We enjoyed the food wine and fruit which was left for our arrival, and was an unexpected bonus. We made use of the information booklet that Wendy had left in the gite. It was a pleasure to stay with Wendy and Pat, thank you.

Warm and welcoming holiday in Capestang

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we stepped in to this gite and found a very generous supply of provisions in our welcome pack Wendy and Pat could not have been kinder and more attentive. The site is extremely well equipped, comfortable, and clean with access to a lovely swimming pool and gardens.

This site made an excellent base to explore the various little villages and walks on the Canal du Midi as well as the more busy but enticing plages on the Med.

Highly recommend.

Wonderful relaxing stay in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay in Gite 1. The gite is clean, comfortable and well equipped. The "welcome provisions" of food and drink was much appreciated and thoughtful. We spent most of the time outside though, enjoying the various places to sit and relax. My favourite place was at a table overlooking the pool on one side and the other side, overlooking a field, surrounded by fragrant rosemary bushes.

Our daughter loved the pool and the garden which extends beyond the pool. She made great friends with the children who were also on holiday in the gite next door. The garden is great for hide and seek and there was plenty of play equipment (swing, tennis racquets, balls, bucket and spades etc).

There are lots of places to visit (Carcassonne, Minerve, Roquebrun etc) but it was always lovely to come back to the gite.

Wendy and Pat are kind and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and they made us feel very welcome.

We thoroughly enjoyed the stay and went home relaxed.
