HISTORY: Havana House is steeped in rich hinterland history. The home is built upon the croquet lawn of the first guesthouse established in the Hinterland region. 'Elston' was a Grand Queenslander, built in the late 1800s, that became a popular destination for holiday-makers from the city, soldiers on leave from war, politicians and diplomats. A tennis court, the croquet pitch and a swimming pool constructed at the base of waterfalls (at the rear of the property) were huge drawcards. In the late 1950's, a fierce fire raged through the area, during which the Guesthouse sadly burnt to the ground. All that remains is a small outhouse, pillars of the front fence - and a pecan tree that was planted especially for guests to enjoy it's produce whilst they played croquet on the lawn. Today, the 130 year old tree majestically towers over the rear lawn of 'Havana House', adorned with lanterns that light up at night as a testament to the rich history of this beautiful property. Each Autumn the tree is amass with pecans, ready for for our guests to enjoy. Self Check-in with key safe No Events (without prior approval - Fees apply). No Pets. No smoking.

Joanne was very communicative and welcoming. The house was beautiful presented and clean with the most wonderful gardens. You were made to fee very welcome.
Havana House was the perfect location for our girls weekend. The house is clean and beautifully presented with well stocked and thoughtful inclusions. The property the house sits on is large with multiple areas to gather including a fire-pit. Jo and John were great hosts and their communication leading up to check-in was helpful, giving lots of info to make our stay comfortable.

OUR STORY: Hi, we’re John and Jo – and together with our four sons, live on the spectacular Sunshine Coast in Queensland. We share an intense passion for not only our family, but also bringing old character homes, brimming with charm and history, back to life. We have renovated and re-imagined 26 properties over the past three decades.
John a carpenter-by-trade, grew up on beautiful Magnetic Island, which influences many of our designs. Relaxed and tropical elements, like verandahs, fretwork and balustrades often feature prominently in our projects.
Jo, a tv news presenter and country girl at-heart, has an intense passion for interiors, architecture and landscapes. She conceptualises the home and garden design, drafts plans, and oversees the fit-out and furnishings.
Each of our sons have shared in our renovation journey and helped out along the way – whilst Flynn, our third son, works alongside us as an apprentice carpenter, honing his craft.
Why they chose this property
CREATING THE DREAM: Havana House has been the collaboration of our family to bring what was an old dilapidated country cottage – back to life.
For 9 months, including three months of unrelenting downpours, we worked tirelessly to create our dream.
It is now such a special place, in a beautiful location, where our family and friends love to gather and create lasting memories and where guests can relax and enjoy all that the stunning Sunshine Coast has to offer.
What makes this property unique
AN ENDURING PAST ... Havana House is rich in history, standing where the croquet lawn of the Hinterland’s very first guesthouse once lay.
The original guesthouse, ‘Elston,’ was a grand Queenslander built in the late 1800s. It quickly became a sought-after retreat for city holidaymakers, soldiers on leave, as well as politicians and diplomats.
With attractions like a tennis court, a croquet pitch, and a swimming pool built into rocks at the base of waterfalls (at the rear of the property), Elston drew visitors from far and wide.
Tragically, a fierce fire in the late 1950s destroyed the beloved guesthouse.
Today, Havana House stands proudly on that same croquet lawn, ready to create new memories for a fresh generation of guests.
MOVING INTO THE FUTURE... All that remains of the iconic guesthouse is the posts of the front gate, a small outhouse and this magestic Pecan tree that was planted 130 years ago so guests could enjoy it’s produce whilst they played croquet on the lawn.
Today, the tree towers over the rear lawn of ‘Havana House’, and each Autumn it is amass with pecans, ready for the next generation of guests to enjoy.
