Villa, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths
Few properties are closer to the Virgin Island National Park beaches on St. John's beautiful north shore. Four minutes to fabulous Maho Bay or Francis Bay and just fifteen minutes from Cruz Bay town, Swogjan's Dragon is a three bedroom villa with 2300 square feet of indoor living space and extensive outdoor decks. There are also a huge pool, a hot tub, and unbelievable panoramic views of the US and British Virgin Islands. See all the way to Virgin Gorda to the East, and to the North the views are of Foxy's on Jost Van Dyke.
The property is perfect for beach loving families and honeymooners alike, with a private but very accessible location. The layout has two king bedrooms on the main floor and a third bedroom with two queens and a twin on the lower floor, accessed by outside stairs.
If hiking is your thing, the Reef Bay trail is only a mile away. Swogjan's is located just minutes from dining and live music in Coral Bay.

The owners, from Massachusetts, are a bit shy... but don't let our personal shyness deter you from enjoying our beautiful home. Our property manager can answer all of your questions.

What makes this Villa unique
Location, location, location. The property is so close to Centerline Road and the North Shore turnoff to the VI National Park beaches, yet it feels worlds away. The views are simply breathtaking. Visit just once and you'll understand why no other property can match this location!

Great Views, Comfortable Villa for 5-6
The views from the main living room and deck/pool/hot tub area are amazing. You get an incredible panorama of Coral Bay, East End, and Norman Island to the east, and Jost Van Dyke to the north. The large pool and hot tub were wonderful--a great way to relax at the end of the day. Beds were comfortable, showers were good (with just enough hot water), and the property managers left a stocked fridge, including chocolates, as we arrived on the Saturday before Easter. They also left plenty of towels, soap, and shampoo/conditioner. The villa was clean and comfortable, though the decor is a little dated. Parking off of Centerline Rd. was easy--it's not one of those crazy hidden driveways with a steep drop, you don't have to go off-roading for 10 minutes, and there's plenty of room to maneuver a large Jeep. Overall, my wife, son, mom, and brother had a really great time. We've stayed on St. John several times, and this has to be the best location we've ever had. Close to the north shore beaches and Coral Bay. Not too far from Cruz Bay, and walking distance to Colombo's Smoothies. My only complaint about the villa's location on its ridge would be the wind, which howled most of the day and night during our 6-day stay. I think it was partly just a particularly windy week on the island. But it's definitely windier at the villa, as there's nothing to block the tradewinds. Finally, my only complaint about the property management is a minor one--the DVD players didn't work. The one downstairs had no connecting cable at all, and the one upstairs had the wrong type of cable. When I tried to get them to address it, they were responsive, but never actually came out and fixed it. Maybe it's harder to get the right kind of cable on the island. Not a big deal, obviously, but they could have done better. But overall, a terrific villa for the price, particularly if, like me, your priorities are great views, good location, a pool, and a hot tub.
Disappointing stay - bugs and other signs of neglect
Our first trip to St. John was a bit of a disappointment, to say the least.
First off, the positives:
Great location close to beaches and Coral Bay
Beautiful view of Coral Bay
Stocked fridge upon arrival
Now, onto the negatives:
While I understand that this is a Caribbean island and bugs and insects are everywhere, there is an obvious insect infestation in the house. Upon arriving (and before unpacking anything), we noticed dozens of ants around one of the sinks. Upon further inspection, we found dozens more just above the oven, at the other sink, on the counters, and near the trash (open trash can with so many insects on the island is probably not the smartest idea). Again, I realize where we are, and that is why I could overlook some small bugs on the walls in the bathrooms and other places, but this is a different issue. Needless to say, we were wiping down the surfaces and washing all dishes within 5 minutes of eating and taking out the trash twice a day, and they were still everywhere. I informed property management through email immediately (It was late and I also decided that I'd rather not waste my vacation on the phone, and email was the only method we had used in our numerous prior communications). The response was slow to start, but ultimately I called the owner of St John Properties halfway through the stay (as the ants had spread throughout the entire villa), and we were moved to another villa. We did appreciate the flexibility of SJP.
Other issues with the villa:
Upon arrival, there was a big noticeable tear in the living room lamp shade.
Multiple hairs on the master bathroom wall.
Missing panel in second bedroom window.
Kitchen window levers are messed up. One window can barely open and close, while the other one can't be closed once it's open. I had to go around outside and push it closed.
The middle of the 3 sets of living room doors are difficult to open. Seems like the doors are off the tracks. I could barely close it properly.
All in all, a very disappointing stay for our 4th VRBO experience.
We are always sad when a guest doesn’t enjoy the St. John experience. But there is no denying that this little piece of paradise is not like most tourist destinations, and not for everybody. Since we are almost ¾ National Park, the island is rural in nature, “in nature” being the operative words. We have all sorts of critters who visit homes, including thrushee birds who will fly right through an open door or window and eat whatever is available!
It’s been widely publicized that the Virgin Islands is experiencing a severe draught, with virtually no rain for the past five months. The normally green hillsides are all brown. Blogs, websites, local news outlets are all talking about the devastating lack of water. These guests were unfortunately visited by sugar ants, tiny critters, desperately looking for something to drink. The guests were inadvertently kind enough to keep providing water in the sink and on the counters for these little guys, who kept coming back for more! All of the St. John Properties villas are on monthly extermination schedules with a professional company. So our villas never have “infestations” (which means the bugs live there, and aren’t just passing through).
The guests arrived Thursday afternoon and didn't call the office or rental manager. They finally called my cell phone Friday evening around six. I sympathized and explained that the bugs they described were sugar ants, tiny and harmless, and obviously in search of water. We dispatched our maintenance man first thing Saturday morning, and as is often the case with these critters, there were none to be found when he arrived at the house. So we asked him to place Terro ant liquid dispensers by the kitchen sinks and in both bathrooms . They called again Saturday around seven pm saying there were ants, and at that time I offered to move them to another house. They chose to wait until the next morning, when I met them and took them to another lovely villa. (it had sugar ants, too)
I hope that everyone who rents a villa understands that these are not hotels, but are peoples’ homes and do have their peculiarities. We hope these folks enjoyed St. John, and are sorry they didn’t stay at Swogjan’s long enough to experience the fabulous180 degree views, wonderful breezes, hot tub and pool as well as everything else the house has offered to so many other satisfied guests for their pleasure.
St John Vacation
A wonderful two weeks with friends and family. The home, pool and hot tub were clean and comfortable. The views from the deck were spectacular. St. John Properties couldn't of been more accommodating to anything extra we needed, which wasn't much. Aqua Blue car rental was a great recommendation, also. Thank you for taking such good care of us. We will be back!
Arriving late at night, all we could confirm was that there was beer/wine in the fridge, chips and salsa, the hot tub worked well, the pool looked great, the burros out by the road seemed nothing more than curious, and it was warm. Hours later the sun came up over Coral Bay (the quieter side of the island) and the place looked even better. Sit and read on the deck, soak in the tub, sway in the hammock, slip into the pool, exchange your coffee cup for a cocktail. There's a (under utilized) stone patio off the front of the house that says "take a nap here". Several great beaches (like something out a travel brochure great) and Coral Bay food/drink are 5-10 winding minutes away. Go 15 minutes the other way to Cruz Bay, the not as quiet end of the island. Luxury is where you find it, I could spend a long time here.
A dragon everyone will love...
We just spent two incredible weeks with family and friends in this beautiful home. Not a new building but charming and welcoming with its own personality (think dragons). Facing east overlooking Coral Bay provides stunning sunrises on a daily basis. A large deck, comfortable chairs, a little black strap rum - who could ask for anything more. Add in an outdoor shower (there are two indoor showers as well) and a good size pool. A car (preferably a jeep) is a must as SD is about 7 miles east (and about a thousand feet above) Cruz Bay. The drive takes about 20 minutes but you're on vacation so take your time and watch for the donkeys. Coral Bay is closer (about 3 miles), much smaller and quieter, but wonderful in its own special way. If you've been to STJ you already know about the beaches, one grander than the other.
This is a unique property that you will never forget, as is the prompt, professional service we received from the gracious staff at St. John Properties. They are the best.
Great Location to Beaches
I was very pleased with our stay at this property. It is in a great location to some of the best beaches on the island. The home was in good shape, and well maintained while we were there. There was a great breeze the whole time, and the fact that the property does not have AC, was not an issue. The pool and the view were awesome! I would definitely stay there again!
