Wooden Head Cabin Early1800's Log Cabin with a View and Modern Amenities
This rebuilt early 1800's log cabin is located in historic and very scenic Saint Donatus, Iowa. this cabin came from a family owned farm in Bernard Iowa where it was constructed as a family affair. This is evident by the differently spaced adze (similar to an axe) marks on the hand hewn logs which suggests people of differing stature were swinging the adze. The cabin was moved by semi to its current home over looking scenic Tete des Morts valley and beautiful Saint Donatus. A lot of creativity and hard work were put in to reconstructing this cabin and maintain the frontier feel while providing a very comfortable laid back stay. Very close in proximity to the popular Kalmes Restaurant and Gehlen House Inn and Barn Brewery. Bellevue State Park and Bellevue Golf Course are only a 15 minute drive along with biking and walking trails. 10 miles to historic Dubuque where you will find many breweries and other attractions such as skiing at sundown mountain or two casinos.

Such a cool place. Rustic but loaded with everything you need to have a wonderful stay. Property owner was SO easy to work with and very accommodating. Excellent communicator as well. Hope to stay there again.
Great little house for an overnight stay will traveling around the area.
My focus is on the overall cleanliness and amenities. I have no complaints and don’t need to add any additional information about the amenities. Beds and linens were clean and in good shape. Check-in and Check-out were super simple. Everything worked without issue. Your not staying here to cook dinner for you family. It’s more along the lines of a little BnB…. What we were sold and what we expected. Kitchen could use an electric kettle to heat water. Would recommend.
Cons: outlets along the kitchen counter shelf did not work.
No stove/oven, but had some small portable thing, that was supposed to replace an oven. Again outlet didn’t work.
Shower would get hot for a few seconds, then go back to cold. It kept repeating the cycle without ever touching the dial.
No plates.
View was nice, except for the 8-10 cars in the neighbors yard. One on blocks, two in the lawn.
No outside grill.
Way over priced.
Nice garage, my truck was happy.

Great place, authentic and well restored! Quiet and safe, we had such a blast with my friends for my roommate’s birthday. She loved the surprise!
Thank you for your hospitality
Cabin was really a treat. Rustic, beautiful, and had everything we needed. A relaxing evening sitting on the back patio next to the fire pit was awesome. The cabin was super clean. The owner was very helpful and quick to get back on any questions I had. We will definitely be staying again on our next trip in that area.
Great, clean cabin! Really cool memorabilia of the time this cabin was built-but all the comforts of a new build. The views are breathtaking of the rolling Iowa hills, and my nieces loved taking turns on the built in swing.
We loved the location and the porch view from the log cabin! The restoration of this log cabin was done beautifully and didn’t miss a detail. We had the best time and enjoyed the Kalmes restaurant close by as well as the brewery in the Gehlan Barn! The kitchen doesn’t have a regular refrigerator or microwave but it does have an air fryer. That would be our only suggestion. Otherwise it was perfect for our family of 4!
Thank you to the owners who took really good care of this property and were very attentive and kind.
This place is even better in person! The rustic, feel, paired with updated amenities. We love the heated floor! Great location for a girls weekend. Thank you, Alec.
Super cute cabin and town! Cabin had everything we needed for a quick weekend getaway with the family! Beautiful countryside and adorable little town, very close to hiking trails as well as Dubuque which has pretty much everything including shopping, restaurants, casino! Will be back

Not what we had hoped for.
There were cracks in the exterior which allowed flies and hornets into the house. The neighbor's dog barked all day and throughout the night. The previous renter left their dirty linens, garbage and their clothes throughout the house.
We were only there for one night, but we all appreciated the history and the craftsmanship that went into this place. Such a beautiful view and overall just a cool place to visit. Hopefully we can come back next year!
Nice to get away, but still close to civilization.
Woodenhead was a great “home away from home” for my family and I. The house was cozy, with the cabin feel, yet had a modern touch. The garage was perfect for when it snowed and getting the truck ready for excursions. The washer and dryer allowed us to pack light. The snowboarding was great (only 30 minutes to Dubuque and Galena). The owners were extremely nice and answered every little question I had. They were than accommodating and we would recommend anyone to stay here!
