About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 7)

The former home of a writer and educator, this 1920's bungalow has been completely restored to provide a very comfortable stay at America's finest beach. Just steps from the boardwalk and beach (three houses from the boardwalk) and near Belmont Park and the Roller Coaster, the house comes equipped with all you will need for the perfect vacation. Boogie board, kayak, beach chairs, sand toys, garage parking and an extra outdoor shower.

The master bedroom has a queen bed and flat screen TV. The second bedroom has bunk beds with a single and double. The comfortable futon in the living room makes into a double, where there is another flat screen TV and IPod/CD music player. We also have a Pack N Play for your toddler.

The shelves are lined with over 300 quality books of all varieties. I keep the prices very affordable compared to any other stand alone house in Mission Beach, so it books out very well. Many people really like this historic-style cottage feel rather than 'all-the-same' condos that line much of the beach, and for good reason. The hard-wood floors and Dutch-door in the front provide a nostalgic step back in time, while enjoying the upgrades to the cottage over the years.

When our kids are grown we're moving back in!! So come enjoy the Mission Beach Cottage while you can. :)

World famous Sea World is five minutes away and the San Diego Zoo is ten minutes. World class dining can be enjoyed in downtown's Gaslamp Quarter, a ten minute drive. Mission Beach offers nightly sunsets, biking, sailing, rollerblading, surfing, boating, a roller coaster and the country's most entertaining people-watching.

Book now, for the vacation you deserve.

About David Simmonds

I first moved to San Diego to go to San Diego State University and landed in Mission Beach, thinking 'why would I ever want to leave here'. Eventually, I was able to buy this house where my wife and I lived for ten years before starting a family. Now we have been vacation renting it for 14 years with plans to move back in when the kids are off to college.

David Simmonds purchased this house in 1990

Why David Simmonds chose San Diego County

One thing that attracted me to buy this house is its location so close to the beach and boardwalk. And it is a single family home with no attached homes, on its own lot. We also loved the historic value in an era when so many others are building new condos.

What makes this house unique

Having a single-family house on its own lot is a huge benefit. There are no common walls and you aren't sharing the yard with anyone. The proximity to the boardwalk and sand is a big plus, too, for a fraction of the price of the oceanfront properties which have very little privacy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our stay at this restored vintage cottage was perfect for my husband and I and our two girls. I am the GM at a very popular hotel in SoCal and my standards are very high. Dave's Beach Cottage is just what we needed for a quick trip by the sea. We loved the authentic feel and original touches, and the open-air feel of the Dutch door leading to the front patio. The house is filled with great books and the boogie boards and kayak got a lot of use. This was so much better than staying in one of the cookie cutter condos that you find all over the beach. We will definitely return! 5 Stars!!

Charming house in the heart of Mission Beach

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house. A quick walk to Belmont Park to entertain the kids on days that were too cloudy for the beach. The ocean is just a few feet away. The owner was incredibly responsive and accommodating. We read comments about ants and prepared by refrigerating most items and we never encountered any problems. We would highly recommend this adorable house to anyone looking for a true San Diego beach house. We'd love to come back again!

Great Beach Experience!

  • 5 of 5

This was exactly what my wife and I were looking for. It felt like home the minute we walked in with our two young sons, who loved the bunk beds and all the sand toys and boogie boards for the beach. The house had everything we needed and we really liked the fact that it is a single house on it's own lot - no shared walls or shared yard. The sidewalk court it is on is very nice with friendly neighbors and the beach is just a few seconds walk away. It's in a great area of Mission Beach with Belmont Park and the roller just a short walk down the boardwalk, but far enough away not to have any noise or crowds. The owner Dave is very attentive and you can tell he takes a lot of pride in the property. He told us he'll never tear the house down and build condos like most others have, so we plan on being regular guests in the future. I highly recommend this unique and historic house for a real beach experience.

This beach house is as advertised. It was everything we could've hoped for! Close to the beach (about 50 yards to the water). And about a 10 min walk to belmont park. Yes the home is dated but that is the appeal of it! A REAL beach house! Once we opened up the house and let the ocean air in we never closed anything. The owner is a professor and by the looks a antique book collector. There are so many books to choose from to take on the sand or just sit near an open window and just lose yourself. I wouldn't change a thing about this place! And i hope the owner doesn't as well. It was absolutely perfect for my family andwe are already planning on booking again. Thank you Mr. Simmonds

Some issues

  • 3 of 5

Great location!!!! This is an older home which is fine. The major issue was lack of ventilation. The are no screens on the windows which don't open. There are no screen doors. You either have to use fans and keep the doors closed or keep the doors open and fight the flies which live in the yellow bush in front of the porch.

Location, location, it enough?

  • 3 of 5

Can't beat the proximity to the beach and still bypass the boardwalk craziness. And the 2 parking spaces with the property (though tiny) are a boon. However, the cottage is VERY rustic (circa 1930), broken/lopsided drawers, windows hard to open. The stove & faucets have been upgraded, the bath towels okay. The refrigerator needs upgrading - its door no longer has storage as all the little "railings" have been broken off. We could not get the freezer to make proper ice cubes even though we turned the temp down. The shower door sticks badly and there is mold behind the silicone caulking which looks gross. The water pressure is great (sea level ). There is internet and 2 tv's though we never turned them on. Some of the amenities were falsely advertised: really flimsy rusty beach chairs, NO useable umbrellas (rusted, broken), broken plastic toys should be trashed. The kayak and paddles were ok. The pack-n-play was in good shape. The bedding fine. Could use more beach towels - we only found 2. Very few electrical outlets - bring power cords/extension cords if you want to use one of the 2 fans. MAJOR problem - the flies!!! Not kidding! There are no screens on any of the windows and hordes of flies are everywhere when trying to cook or eat. And of all things? The kitchen trash receptacle did not have a proper lid so it was always full of flies. As San Diego residents, we were able to cart much of our personal belongings and went home to cart a few more (beach towels, beach toys, extension cords, fly swatter!) One more thing, upon arrival there was a car parked in one of our designated spots. The owner was called but NEVER responded. Turns out it was a local resident there temporarily but still we should have received a response. This little cottage could be sooo inviting with some TLC. Go in with your eyes wide open and prepare to rough it. (Could there be some wine glasses, please?)

Owner's Response: I'm always surprised at the occasional negative review, but am always reminded that each person has their own perceptions. Of the last 20 reviews most have been 5 stars, a few 4 stars, and a 1 star from a guy who tried to stay another night when new guests were arriving, then claimed I overbooked, which is impossible to do in the vrbo system. What are you going to do :) Anyway, I'm sorry the house wasn't to your liking. The vast majority of guests have liked it a lot. Yes, I know the fridge could use replacing now - it still works great but some recent guests broke the rails in the door, but with every night booked all summer I need to wait for a break in September to replace it. And flies are a fact of life at the beach in the summer, they breed in the kelp. The City has been picking up trash twice a week in summer to help mitigate that, but otherwise it's nature. I haven't been to a coastline anywhere in the world where there weren't some flies in the warm months. The beach chairs and sand toys are replaced every start of summer and by August they may not seem new - they get a lot of use. My wife and I take a lot of pride in the house and do our best to keep it original and appealing at the same time. I have owned it since 1990 and will never tear it down and build condos - my kids would kill me!

Phoenix, AZ.

The place was just like it was advertised and is very close to the beach.

We enjoyed our stay & loved the location...close to the beach, restaurants & Belmont Park (for the grandkids). David was very quick to respond to my questions before we arrived. My husband wished the tv carried more stations but frankly we weren't watching much tv anyway. We would definitely book it again.
