We have visited here three times and hope to be back for another stay. It is welcoming and relaxing. Sitting on the porch listening to the cows moo. At night counting the fireflies and stars. My son called this his heaven on earth. The owners are amazing, quick to respond and accommodating. Thank you for everything!

Peaceful Country Retreat

We wanted a relaxing stay off the beaten path and we got it. Kids loved seeing the cows and enjoying the lazy river. Quaint small town nearby, with a great experience at the Carter Family Fuld and a short drive to Natural Tunnel State Park.

Family time

This is our second stay on Iola Farms and we will definitely return! The farm is so beautiful and what a treat to hike the grounds down the river and visit with the cows. Perfect!

Short stay while traveling through

If you're looking for a remote getaway, this is it. Walking the property looks like pictures on a postcard... gorgeous! We were only staying for a day while traveling through the area, but the house had everything we needed and was a great place to stop and relax.

Amazing location

If you want to get away from it all, this is the place for you. Nestled between the hills it beautiful. We have rented this house and the other one in the property 3 times. Love it!!

Great Time

It is a beautiful spot nestled in the river valley. Stay was very quiet and relaxing, perfect for the weekend my brothers and I wanted to spend with our father. The river was slow and shallow enough that we could spread out from the access points and work our way around by wading, and everyone (except me) caught fish, from smallmouth to catfish and bluegill. It was great to unplug for a few days and watch the cattle grazing from the porch when we weren't fishing.

A Piece of Heaven

If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful vacation look no further. This location is perfect for a getaway in the mountains with beautiful views, a fun float down the river, and roaming the property with the cows. The house was clean and stocked with anything you could think of - down to a dog bin in case you ran out of supplies. Owners are very responsive and accommodating to anything we needed. Will absolutely be making this a yearly trip!

I hesitate to say how much we love this place, because we don’t want word to get out. Please DON’T go. Don’t enjoy the gorgeous peace and quiet of this gem of a place. Don’t enjoy the option of completely disconnecting and possibly not even leaving the farm for the length of your stay. You definitely don’t want to enjoy sitting on the patio with your coffee for hours in the morning and listening to the amazing variety of songbirds and watching the hummingbirds bicker. You won’t enjoy reading, napping, building a puzzle, or walking down the gravel road to PawPaw beach. You definitely don’t want to tube down the river or bike or walk the Mendota Trail, nor do you want to enjoy the quaint and delightful culture and attractions of nearby Carter Fold, Abingdon, or Bristol. You won’t enjoy the fireflies at night, the deer grazing at first light, or the cows grazing peacefully around the farm. Nope. Don’t go.

Holiday weekend in Mendota

This farmhouse was a nice rural setting where you can really get away from it all. We found the isolation peaceful, but it was only a 10 mile drive to civilization. Be advised that you need to be careful when walking around the property about ticks. If you do that then you can wander around on this farm to pick blackberries or wade or float in the river at the bottom of the hill. The house was well-equipped and supplied.

Great peaceful getaway

House was very clean. Great secluded location. Loved seeing the cows and their babies. No cell service in area, but satellite wifi at house is very good. Bring muck boots to walk property to avoid stepping in poo. Bring food with you, not much in area to purchase food and drink. It is within 45 minutes of The Devil's Bathtub, Natural Tunnel State Park, Appalachian Caverns, & Bass Pro Shop.

Remote and quiet

Super quiet little gem out in the valleys. We enjoyed our visit very much! Well equipped place with a lot of thought put into things and some more than just the basics in staples and condiments which was appreciated. Do NOT attempt this place in a car with low clearance as they are not joking about the driveway. It is steep and has water control speed bumps that are no joke. There is also a very steep left turn at the top of the mountain that reminded us of a roller coaster! Internet worked very well especially considering how far away from civilization this property is. Definitely suggest arriving before dark the first time, but the quiet and solitude are worth it. Comfy beds and good water pressure. All in all a very solid stay!

My Heaven on earth

I could live here! Quiet, beautiful. You can walk through the grass with no shoes. The river is wonderful. The girls (ages 5, 4 and 2) loved it. They said it is perfect, and they were never leaving. The guys had great fun fishing (ages 36, 12 and 12). I think the 12 yr olds caught the most. The home is nice, clean, and well furnished, kid and pet friendly. My daughter enjoyed sitting on the covered deck crocheting while watching the kids play in the rain. I enjoyed the peace and quiet of no traffic, trains, horn honking or sirens. This was our second stay here and we will be back. Thank you!

Can’t wait to comeback!

This property has been the most secluded one that we’ve stayed at. The most relaxing one as well. Breath taking views direct river access with a cute picnic table and bonfire, there’s nothing more you could ask for. The farm workers were very nice and welcoming. This beautiful cozy home had everything we needed to accommodate our stay. Just be sure to go grocery shopping before you head to the house. It is a 30 min drive from when you lose service and 40 min from anywhere else like grocery store fast foods and gas stations. DoorDash does deliver but I met them at the entrance because the driveway is NOT for any car. Overall the stay was GREAT! We can’t wait to comeback and stay at this gorgeous property. Ps-My teens survived without their phones for Couple of days and wished we could stay longer. It’s a great place to get away from that running around and work life.

Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival

We had a great stay consistent with what one would expect of a beautiful rural farm in the mountains! As advertised, the driveway might give some pause at first but with ground clearance and taking it slow all is fine. The property is beautiful and we enjoyed walking to a nice slow part of the river to wade in and tube. The accomodations are as advertised and served all we needed. Our dog enjoyed the fenced in yard. Also as advertised, the cell phone reception is almost non-existant. The internet provided help to do the basics of email or mapping a location on GPS but nothing beyond that. We had a manageable 35 minute drive in to downtown Bristol for the festival. Would happily stay again if we find ourselves in a similar situation. Thanks!

Very relaxing!

So many great things about this property...the first--it was spotlessly clean! Plenty of towels, soap for the dishes, everything needed to live there for several days. The location is very secluded, for 95% of our time the cattle were our only neighbors. We loved the peace and quiet! We enjoyed fishing, caught several bass. (don't eat them due to warnings of toxicity). Out dog enjoyed the fenced yard & got plenty of exercise. We would definitely return in the future. All aspects as advertised in the property description--driveway is steep up and down. We did fine in a Ram 1500 4 WD truck. I would not want to drive a car up & down it. We have Spectrum cell service so we had to drive several miles to access it. We did connect through WIFI & were able to text elderly family members that way, to keep in touch. Due to the wifi restrictions we had minimal internet connection. Direct TV was available & had many channels. I highly recommend this place if you don't mind seclusion and giving up internet for your time there.

We visit the area frequently to be with family who love near by, enjoy the beautiful scenery (mountain and river), and get away from hectic city life. Iola Farms has become our go to location. It is amazingly peaceful and we never leave without wishing we could stay just a little bit longer. This June trip we took our two dogs and my husband’s parents. All four loved it! And all four were very interested in the cattle…..from a distance. We enjoyed morning porch sitting in the cool mountain air. The river is just a short walk away and perfect for wading and throwing in a fishing line. The blackberry brambles are full of berries this time of year.Can’t wait to go back in December for the austere version of Iola Farms….just as beautiful!
