The Reitlingstal is a valley in the north-western part of the Elm mountain range near Braunschweig and a popular destination for visitors. The valley intersects from the Elmrand at Erkerode and ends after about 3 km in a sprawling valley basin. On the surrounding hilltops are the remains of the riding-hill fortifications, prehistoric ring walls, which probably gave the population protection in wartime until the Middle Ages.
Tourist is the valley as a recreational and hiking area and used for cross-country skiing and cycling. It can be reached from Erkerode on a road running along the honeycomb, which leads further into the Elm to Tetzelstein. Since the end of the 19th Century, as at other places in the Elm, over the Reitlingstal a forest restaurant. From there you have a good view of the valley, which is one of the most popular places for Elm visitors. At the parking lot begins a 4.5 km long "nature adventure trail Reitling" with 7 experience points. The path was established by the "Open-Air and Experience Museum Ostfalen" (FEMO) with headquarters in Königslutter.
