Incredible Location - couldn't have been better!
We absolutely loved staying at Catedral! It was the perfect location to walk to the market if we wanted to cook, the plaza for coffee in the mornings, and right around the corner from our 2 favorite spots to eat (Deavedura & The Mezzanine). Only things to keep in mind is no AC and needing to sleep with a fan on/bug net for mosquitos at night – but it only takes away from the experience if you let it!
There's a great walk to the beach (Playa El Escambron) that takes about 30 min, and it is always easy to uber to beaches further away, or San Juan for museums and to see the big city!
Property was freshly painted and sparking clean. Loved the open air living and hanging out in the court yard. All you need is a short walk away. Looking forward to returning.
Roomy apartment in center of Old San Juan
At first it was just as we imagined it. We have stayed in apartment all over the world. This one was below average in provisions. No sharp knives for cooking no colander for pasta. No English spoken. No WIFi. Very noisy until late at night from adjacent business. Housekeepers invades our private area without notice or permission one morning while we were still in pajamas. Nice and cool without air conditioning. No ice. Freezer was turned off. No instruction how to activate it.
Thank you for your feedback! We are are always working on improving our business and have taken note of the issues listed in your review. While our housekeeper may not speak English, the management staff is very fluent and available via email, text and telephone. We encourage all of our guests to contact us if there are any questions/concerns regarding the password for the Wifi, etc. It is important to note that this apartment is located in the heart of Old San Juan within walking distance of all popular bars and restaurants. The old city has a vibrant nightlife during the weekends, similar to that of the French Quarter in New Orleans. Due to the open air layout unique to 17th century colonial Spanish architecture, the sounds of the city have a tendency to float through the space. Some guests love this truly local experience, others prefer something a little more secluded. The freezer was in fact broken and we have since repaired it. We were surprised to hear that our housekeeper was in the space without giving you advanced notice. She normally never does this unless it is past check-out time. Nonetheless, we will make sure this does not happen again.
Casa Arana loved it!!!
Casa Arana ...Always wanted to stay in a historic house in Old San Juan with a garden courtyard! How blessed we are. We slept with our bedroom doors open to the outside garden courtyard which is our living room. Old and rustic with so much character. What a find. This is the family home of the late painter Alfonso Arana. His original artwork adorns the walls. Love love love this place. It’s Devine!
Great place to stay!
My girlfriend and I loved this place and had a great vacation. We loved the beautiful courtyard, the location in Old San Juan and the Luis was great.
Our apartment is on calle San José, the entryway of which is a gallery space of local artists. Around the corner you will find the Cathedral and the City Hall. It is one block from the main square Plaza de Armas, where you can find a supermarket and open air cafes, wonderful restaurants and bakeries. We are very near the 16th century fortress El Morro and a 20 minute walk to the Escambron Beach.

Why Luis Alfonso Melendez chose Catedral
My father, Luis Alfonso, and his two sisters, Rosa and Isabel, spent their early childhood in Old San Juan. Their house was in the Caleta de las Monjas until their departure to France in the early 1970's. In 1985 their father, the late painter Alfonso Arana, returned to buy this house in Calle San Jose and it became the family home. It is a beautiful building with the patio on the ground floor and beautiful terraces upstairs. My grandfather used to call it 'his Palace'.... In 2009, my father and his siblings, decided to open the house for guests, and furnished the downstairs apartment for vacation rentals. My father lives on the 2nd and 3d floor of the house, my aunts reside in Massachusetts and in Connecticut. We love our Old San Juan home and hope you enjoy your stay there.
