The House of the River was so lovely - quite nicely and recently redone and very comfortable. The back porch was perfect to enjoy a morning coffee. The house was clean and comfortable; we would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.
Had a great stay! The check-in process had an issue but the owners were quick to respond and to solving the issue. I would recommend this rental to friends and family!
This was the perfect home for my parents, daughter, son-in-law and grandson who were in town for a family birthday celebration. Location, view of the river and the charming home gave us space to chat, watch basketball and just chill!
Stayed with coworkers for a few days. Place was very clean and large enough for everyone to have privacy. Will definitely be coming back in the future.
The house was very cozy inside! It was perfect for our ski trip. The hosts are very nice and communication and planning were super easy! I would highly recommend staying here.
Beautiful home on the Wisconsin river with stunning views! The property was clean and had beautiful decor and thoughtful amenities. Very comfortable and convenient! We wanted to stay longer!
This property was perfect for my husband and I, our two boys and their friends! We came for a long weekend so the boys could ski at Cascade. The house was clean, beautifully refurbished, and the set up was perfect. The boys stayed in the bedrooms upstairs, the kitchen was perfect for what we needed, and there was plenty of room. I can’t wait to come back!!
The house was so cozy and clean. It backs right up to the Wisconsin river. Downtown portage was close to the house and super cute. Right by cascade mountain and 20 minutes from devils head for skiing and snowboarding. We had an amazing stay at the house!
Such a beautiful & welcoming feel as soon as you walk in the door. Relaxing in the back yard, visiting with family, we just enjoyed the view of the river! All four of us +my 4 year old was very pleased of the place over all. The thought of doing our family get together here, annually, has crossed our minds.
We had a wonderful stay! Charming home with original details, clean, modernized and well equipped. Cute town that’s close to lots of activities. Host recommendations were greatly appreciated. Kayaks, fishing, morning coffee on the porch while watching the river, hiking at Devil’s Lake were just some of the highlights. Hosts were very responsive to communication. Great family memories made here
Everything from pre-trip communication throughout stay was wonderful. The pictures matched the actual. The house was clean and comfortable and spacious enough to fit our family of 5. Wonderful having the Wisconsin river in the backyard and within quick drive to cascade mountain for skiing. Highly recommend!
The house was very nice. It was very comfortable and clean. Communication with owner was top notch.
It was a great location for a ski trip to Cascade Mountain and would also be a wonderful place to visit any season.
As an unexpected treat, there were many card and board games available...some classics and some that were new to us. We sat around the table in the evening played games and made some great memories.
The inside of this modest looking Cape-Cod style home has been beautifully restored and is a work of art with original woodwork and doors. The updated kitchen was well stocked with paper products, a wide variety of complimentary Keurig coffee, and bottled water. The rooms were spacious and the beds very comfortable.
But the most spectacular feature of this rental is the view of the Wisconsin River from the back porch or the upper deck. Both provide outstanding vistas of this stunning waterway, and they each have comfortable chairs and tables. We enjoyed breakfast alfresco each morning.
Portage is a small, relatively quiet city, which is conveniently located within driving distance to the Wisconsin Dells, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin, and Devils Lake State Park, as well as the Cascade Mountain ski resort. My wife and I enjoyed the boat rides at the Dells, followed by fine dining at nearby Fields restaurant located at the Wilderness Resort.
We also visited historic sites in Portage, including the Indian Agent House and the Surgeon’s Quarters. The latter is located a few hundred feet from where 17th century French explorers, Jacques Marquette (a Jesuit missionary) and Louis Joliet, “portaged” from the Fox River to the Wisconsin River and then down the Mississippi.
