About Ed and Damaris De Varona

I work as an attorney in Miami. I am 50 years old. My wife and I have been married 17 years. I am self employed and enjoy considerable scheduling flexibility. We like to get away on long weekends. Because of the kids, school the longer trips have to wait until summer. There is also some time for us on spring break in March or Winter break in December to travel. We enjoy traveling to new places in our small RV. We have two beautiful daughters ages,16 and 15. The girls are very friendly and enjoy exploring new surroundings. We enjoy the great outdoors but also enjoy museums and touring new cities. This home is available on short notice.

Ed and Damaris De Varona purchased this house in 2007

Why Ed and Damaris De Varona chose Blue Ridge Mountains

I was looking for a total getaway home that did not compromise privacy for convenience or space for amenities or views for location. Black Bear delivers more than your typical cabin in the woods. I can walk or bike into downtown Black Mountain for groceries or other provisions. I can park my RV out front or my cars in the two car garage. I can walk with the kids to the lake and the community pool. I can start hikes into the surrounding mountains within minutes from my home. I was looking for a place to relax and unwind to enjoy mountain sunsets from my decks and hear the sounds of nature and not the sounds of traffic or neighbors. Bird watch from my backyard decks. Eat your meals "al fresco" every night as you watch the sunset. I wanted to have a modern home with all the modern high tech conveniences. I did not want to settle for a 'Spartan' mountain cabin with limited or unpaved road access, internet access or spotty phone service. I wanted to have plenty of room for guests. I wanted a place to start my day trips into the Blue Ridge without having to worry about paved access, long winding gravel roads or adverse weather conditions. I wanted a home where AC in the Summer is strictly optional but four seasons can be enjoyed. Fall season at Black Bear is stunning and Winter season is mostly mild with some post card perfect snow showers.

I wanted a place within a day trip of all the Nature activities Western NC has to offer. Black Bear has delivered for me I know it will for you as well.

A luxorious

  • 5 of 5

A luxurious, clean, beautifully decorated home high in the trees. The master bedroom has lovely views an honestly looks and feels like being in a tree house. Comfortable bed and attractive and comfortable furniture throughout. Well equipped kitchen. Our favorite room is the sun room off the dining room that leads to the deck. Again, views and lots of light. My contact with the owner was pleasant. Definitely 5 stars!

beautiful home, great location

  • 4 of 5

we have stayed in this house a few times now-Ed is easy to work with, usually responds quickly to questions. We love the sun room & the deck is a wonderful place to start the morning with coffee & devotions listening to the birds singing. The lighting could be better---quite a few bulbs are either missing or burned out. Black Mountain is a nice little town--Phils Barbecue pit is our favorite place to eat--delicious southern barbecue! The Dripolator is a great coffee shop. This home is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and other great roads to ride our motorcycle (we put on 1625 miles this year!!) I think you would enjoy staying here--hopefully we will be back again!!

Owner's Response: Hi Kate. Thanks for you feedback its great to have you back again. Hope you will see us again next year. I am curious. We are in the home now checking on things and doing necessary fixes and upgrades including new 60 inch big screen TV. Which bulbs did you find burnt out?. I am surprised that you found a lighting issue. BBR has the most lighting I have ever seen in a comparable home. I found a few bulbs that were not lighting but once I turned them they lit up. Please give me a call or send me an email with details if you recall which ones and I will try to rectify right away.

DISAPPOINTING

  • 1 of 5

Booked this home from April 8, 2017 to May 13, 2017. This is a beautiful location, quiet, peaceful with wonderful views and unfortunately that is the only positive remark we can make about it. Although this location has tremendous possibilities it fails in all other areas. In short, the property and building, inside and out have been poorly maintained. It gives the appearance of an owner who has lost interest and is hanging on without any additional investment.

Owner's Response: It is unfortunate you feel that way. I wish I could have spoken to you personally about your concerns. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and most people that have stayed have found the home most suitable in every way. I have had many long term guests that have absolutely loved my home no one has ever complained that the home is unkept or rundown. As you can see from prior reviews, I have also had many repeat guests who stay year after year. The last guest that stayed after you enjoyed BBR so much that she added an extra day to her stay. Rest assured we do all we can to upgrade the home as needed and will continue to improve our home over time. You had complained that the home was not clean enough when you arrived but when I offered to send my housekeeper over so that further efforts could be made to satisfy you, you turned them down. I also asked you to send me pictures so I can see the issues were complaining of and you never did. As you can see from my very positive reviews over the years, we are very responsive to the legitimate concerns of our guests and take every step necessary to satisfy their concerns within reason.
