About Ed and Damaris De Varona

I work as an attorney in Miami. I am 50 years old. My wife and I have been married 17 years. I am self employed and enjoy considerable scheduling flexibility. We like to get away on long weekends. Because of the kids, school the longer trips have to wait until summer. There is also some time for us on spring break in March or Winter break in December to travel. We enjoy traveling to new places in our small RV. We have two beautiful daughters ages,16 and 15. The girls are very friendly and enjoy exploring new surroundings. We enjoy the great outdoors but also enjoy museums and touring new cities. This home is available on short notice.

Why Ed and Damaris De Varona chose Blue Ridge Mountains

I was looking for a total getaway home that did not compromise privacy for convenience or space for amenities or views for location. Black Bear delivers more than your typical cabin in the woods. I can walk or bike into downtown Black Mountain for groceries or other provisions. I can park my RV out front or my cars in the two car garage. I can walk with the kids to the lake and the community pool. I can start hikes into the surrounding mountains within minutes from my home. I was looking for a place to relax and unwind to enjoy mountain sunsets from my decks and hear the sounds of nature and not the sounds of traffic or neighbors. I wanted to have a modern home with all the modern high tech conveniences. I did not want to settle for a 'Spartan' mountain cabin with limited or unpaved road access, internet access or spotty phone service. I wanted to have plenty of room for guests. I wanted a place to start my day trips into the Blue Ridge without having to worry about paved access, long winding gravel roads or adverse weather conditions. I wanted a home where AC in the Summer is strictly optional but four seasons can be enjoyed. Fall season at Black Bear is stunning and Winter season is mostly mild with some post card perfect snow showers.

I wanted a place within a day trip of all the Nature activities Western NC has to offer. Black Bear has delivered for me I know it will for you as well.

We could not have been more pleased in our two months' stay.

  • 5 of 5

The owners were readily available for help with a couple minor mechanical things--most accommodating. This is a well appointed modern home. We know Black Mountain very well and wanted to be close in town this stay, having always stayed in the hills in the past. It is 5 minutes from anywhere in town. There are several good restaurants. The kichen is spacious and well equipped. The upstairs master BR has ensuite bath and a study suitable for sleeping on a queen air mattress that is included. There is another BR with bath on the first floor. Additional sleeping is in a large downstairs room on a couch or you can bring an air matress or cot, or both. We grilled on the back porch. It is situated in a neighborhood in the end of an exquisitely quiet, untrafficked cul-de-sac. Except when we took walks or went out to eat, we couldn't see the nearby houses. It was ideal. When grands visited, there was wonderful play area in the long driveway and virtually empty cul-de-sac. The enclosed sunroom is also suitable for sleeping, but it was our favorite spot to sit for morning coffee, sometimes for four hours. Thanks for the use of your excellent place.

Owner's Response: I am really pleased BBR met your vacation needs. I want it to always feel like a home away from home. We fell in love with the area and I am happy to share it with our guests. I hope you have the chance to return again.

Beautiful home, great location

  • 4 of 5

This was our second stay here in this beautiful home. We like that is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Black Mountain is a cute, fun town, grocery store is close & there are great restaurants! Phil's Barbecue & Gondoliers Pizza are our favorites, Dripolator has really good coffee. We stayed here to ride our motorcycle--wonderful roads to ride, many places to go!! (we put 1500 miles on in a week! )

While the house is very nice, we had some issues with lighting & the Jacuzzi tub. There are not a lot of "staples" provided in the kitchen. It was clean & comfortable with plenty of room--my favorite is the sun room!! The deck is a wonderful, quiet place to eat & enjoy the sounds of all the birds. On our last day, we enjoyed seeing a mama bear & her two cubs in the driveway!! What a sight~~ and so cute!! :)

I think you would enjoy this home, Ed is easy to work with & usually responds quickly to any questions. We hope to return here again!!
