About Mara Liske

I grew up on a small island nation in the South Pacific and living in the United States could not be more different. However, living in beautiful Santa Cruz and the Ocean that connects me to my ancestors is a short walk from my home. Zach and I love it here and it gives us great pleasure to hear our guests have an enjoyable and restorative experience in our home.

Mara Liske purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Mara Liske chose Santa Cruz

It truly is a private sanctuary and yet convenient to the downtown Pacific Avenue restaurants, shopping, museums, movie theaters, Boardwalk, Wharf, Cowell's Beach, West Cliff Drive, Mission Street restaurants, Wilder Ranch, and Pogonip.

What makes this cottage unique

Quietude! Listen to the birds and rustling of the bamboo taking in a soak in the hot tub.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This little Santa Cruz sanctuary is exactly that. It was a wonderful and relaxing nook tucked away in a quiet neighborhood of Santa Cruz. The space is exactly as described. Definitely take the time to enjoy the private hot tub, it was exquisite. The bed was extra comfortable and the patio was perfect to watch the super moon lunar eclipse from. We would definitely rent this Again!

couples weekend

  • 5 of 5

Hosts are very nice and accomadating, they will even ask what temp you like your jacuzzi set at. We walked to emilys cafe every morning (great coffee and pastry), to the beach and to downtown for dinner and drinks every night. DvD player, ipod docking radio and stereo, comfy couch aNd everything you'd need in the kitchen to stay home and cook. We can't wait to do this again next year. Worked out a whole lot easier then a comparably priced hotel room and we didn't have to share the jacuzzi with anyone! Thank You both for a great weekend! Also this place would be perfect for a family, it could easily sleep two children.

Cute, warm welcoming cottage centrally located in Santa Cruz

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was clean & well equipped. It had a very nice secure yard for pets. My hostess, Mara couldn't have been nicer. She made herself available to help in any way but yet very respectful of my privacy. I am a senior lady traveling alone with my little dog and felt very safe & secure there. I even extended my stay an extra day!! I would definitely stay again if I found myself wandering that way again

Cottage Sanctuary

  • 4 of 5

This is a charming, private cottage well-situated on the Westside of Santa Cruz. It is really a very large studio -- with the sleeping quarter separated by wall units/bookcases/cabinets. It is perfect for one or two people. Any additional folks would be sleeping on an air mattress in the common area. Kitchen is modern and up-to-date, easy to make your own meals. It has a beautiful hi-top table & 2 chairs. Bathroom is modern is very nice shower. We didn't try the hot tub but it looked inviting. Washer/dryer is in garage next door to house, so it requires going outside to do laundry. Location is about half a mile from shopping, restaurants. With the beautiful weather we had, it's a nice walk. Mara lives next door and was responsive to our communications. We enjoyed our visit! Thank you!

Great Cottage Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Mara's cottage for the weekend to celebrate my partner's birthday. Mara was attentive to our needs and made sure we were comfortable from the moment we arrived until our check out. The space exhibits great attention to detail, from the roster of books on display to the supplies of spices and cooking ingredients available for guests to use. I even messaged Mara after hours to ask about the location of a broom, and she responded within minutes! The cottage location is ideal for strolling, whether you are heading into town or to the beach. On our last evening, we cooked up a robust meal and enjoyed it on the sunny patio, alongside hummingbirds, sunset, and lavender. Excellent rental spot, and a relaxing addition to your trip!

Absolutely very nice!

  • 5 of 5

I loved my stay here at Mara's cottage, it's truly a gem. The cottage is very well maintained and it's sure a home away from home. It's very quiet and peaceful. The cottage is a good size home and has everything you would need. The layout is very spacious and fully decorated. Mara and her husband were very tentative and welcoming, I'm very gracious for their hospitality. The cottage is located about 15 mins away, by foot from SC's main strip, and it's a nice little walk down. I would definitely stay here again the next time I come down to SC.

Needs some TLC...

  • 2 of 5

We read all the reviews talking about how cute and cozy this studio is so we tried it. It is cute but needs a lot of TLC.

Hot tub.. we own a hot tub. The chemicals need to be checked at least once a week, more often if it’s being used. There was no chlorine in the water. There was a container of chlorine near the tub but no test strips nor a measuring cup. No PH test nor chemicals. The leaves from the trees he’d been sucked into the intake valves so the water was not clear. we didn’t use it.

To close the bathroom window someone had to stand outside and push while someone inside turned the lever. Very rusted. The same for a window in the living but that was because there was no lever so my wife would push from the outside while I tried to turn the screw mechanism with my bare hand.

The microwave cover above the stove would fall on you when you open the door. It hit my wife in the head. It needed to be correctly re-attached.

.

The bathroom tiles haven’t been correctly sealed so after a shower the soap scum dries on them making them look dirty.

The bed is way too soft. You sink into it and it doesn’t breath so it’s hot. And if you sleep on your stomach your head will sink down into it and you won’t be able to breath. My wife moved to the couch but that has a large broken spring in it that makes it uncomfortable.

As stated by another reviewer, the garden is very overgrown.

I texted the day before we left to see if we could have an extra hour to check out. They didn’t have anyone arriving for 3 days according to their calendar. Check out is at 10am which is early for a VRBO rental. We received no response so we rushed and left on time. As we were leaving the cleaning lady showed up just to see if we were leaving. She then left to another job. I then remembered that the contract says that if you leave an hour late they’ll charge you $50 an hour.

Also, despite the fact you must pay with Paypal they then will subtract their fee from your security deposit. So we were charged nearly $40 to pay with Paypal for 6 days. And it took a month for the refund of the deposit. They say they need to see if there were any movies rented but that information could be available in 5 minutes if you go to Directv.com., not wait until your bill arrives.

When it was first built it must have been really nice but the wear and tear of constant rentals has taken its toll.
