About this property

Early1880s farmhouse in rural Eastern Kentucky Appalachia.

The Old Farmhouse is located on an 80-acre working forage farm in the rural Eastern Kentucky Appalachian Mountains, an area rich in history and mountain tradition.

It's a step back in time but, with modern conveniences. With 2 full beds upstairs and a queen bed downstairs, it will accommodate up to 6 adult guests and you will have the entire home to yourself. It also offers a fully equipped kitchen, a parlor, an office area, a full bath with a laundry area on the first floor and another full bath upstairs, both with showers.

The house is believed to have been built sometime in the early1880's originally constructed with hand-hewn beams for the foundation, square nails and rough-sawn lumber. After a 3-year plus restoration of the home, much of the original structure was left intact. The house features original style mill work and siding, original window frames with the "wavy" window glass, original gable-end architecture, replicated and original window trims, a metal roof, half-round guttering, the original hand-made, hand-planed kitchen door with its square nails, locally milled hard-maple flooring and other time-appropriate features along with some curious construction anomalies left as originally constructed. It's furnished with early 1900's and vintage furniture and Victorian replicas including a 1930's working radio and a Sears phonograph, a 1924 farmhouse sink, Gone with the Wind lamps, antique fireplace mantle and decorative summer covers over the closed fireplaces. As a neighbor said, "It's like coming home".

During your stay, you may see various wildlife such as deer, turkey and other animals native to the area. On a clear night, you can star-gaze or sit under our partially covered pavilion watching the fireflies (lightning bugs as they are called here) and listen to the sounds of the occasional whippoorwill call or the "whoo whoo" of a Great Horned Owl and in early spring, the sounds of the frogs "singing". You have access to an outdoor grill, fire pit, picnic table, outdoor seating, outdoor games of horseshoes, and bean bag toss (cornhole) and (during warm months) an outdoor TV under the pavilion to stream your favorite shows. Or, if you choose, you may want to hike thru the woods on the farm or maybe just sit on the front porch in one of our cane-bottomed antique rockers and straight-backed chairs and birdwatch or enjoy checkers or chess in the parlor.

Since it is a working forage farm, on occasion, you may see and hear vintage tractors and farm equipment as we prepare for harvesting square baled hay.

The location is within approximately 35 miles of the Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Resort Park, Buckhorn Lake State Park, and Levi Jackson State Park. Nearby activities include rock climbing, hiking (including the Motherlode), Sag Hollow Golf Course, underground kayaking, ziplines, ATV trails (including Wildcat ATV Park in London, KY) bowling, indoor rock climbing and more.
