About John Cunningham

Sons and daughters, born 1943 - 1950 of a prominent Burlington physician, siblings and their families have maintained the large, rustic beachfront cottage for over 65 years. The five owners have shared this six-bedroom camp during the summer months, bringing spouses, children, and grandchildren to this pristine beach community with excellent neighbors. Traveling from California, Florida, Maine, Western New York and Southern Vermont, the extended families enjoy relaxing away from their busy lives as doctors, professors, psychologists and educators at the Big Yellow Camp with the broadest view of Lake Champlain on Colchester Point.

John Cunningham purchased this cottage in 1949

Why John Cunningham chose Lake Champlain

A singular stretch of light sand beach, bracketed by prominent slate and cedar points, the Cunningham Camp faces the broad lake with a wrap around porch view of Camel's Hump mountain near Stowe, VT to Port Kent, NY, the western terminus of the Lake Champlain Ferry that links Burlington to New York and the Adirondack Mountains. This broad lake view attracted our father and mother to build the Camp in 1948. Three generations of Cunninghams have summered here and now are inviting others to share in the magic of a Colchester Point beachfront vacation.

What makes this cottage unique

Just 15 minutes from Burlington, named one of the top ten small cities in the U.S., by car and only 30 minutes by bicycle on rail-to-trail path along the lake shore, the camp is both convenient and private. The bike trail extends past Colchester Point well out into Malletts Bay, providing some of the most picturesque walking, running, or biking in New England. Boating, kayaking, canoeing, and sailing are as easy as sliding the watercraft into the water from the soft sand beach.

Internal space, with an Adirondack style, is enhanced by vaulted, two-story living room ceiling, knotty pine walls, a very large dining porch that catches the early morning light, and an even larger front porch with that breath-taking wrap-around view - -extending down the lake beyond the horizon. This vacation home is 'paradise found'.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Camp Cunningham provided a great family getaway! Naps on the beach, yoga with Camel Hump Mountain as a majestic background, canoeing from the beach (literally steps away from the front door). We loved the 100% Vermont decor; natural pine wood walls, wood floors and an absolutely one-of-a-kind driftwood full size bed in one of the six bedrooms. We will be back!

Great Family Getaway Location

  • 4 of 5

Cottage is rustic, but clean, well equipped and spacious! Location is great for biking and visiting area attractions or just kicking back on the beach - just outside the door!

We had a great week!

Thank you Cunningham Family!

Beautiful location for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Simple (not luxurious) camp house, in a wonderful Lake Champlain location. Very nice location for families with bikes. In same family since 1948. We'll be back.

A memorable week on beautiful Lake Champlain

  • 5 of 5

The house worked great for the 12 of us - eight adults and four small children. Six bedrooms, all with very comfortable beds, a great porch looking out on the lake, an eating area just off the kitchen that worked extremely well. The living room is large and well equipped, although with the excellent weather we didn't use it that much. The kitchen isn't large but worked just fine - a large refrigerator, lots of utensils and dishes, and well located in the house. The bathrooms are small but worked just fine, and there is an outdoor shower with hot and cold water that we used a lot. It is a great location, right on the shore of Lake Champlain, friendly neighbors, plenty of parking space. We would rent this again!

Perfect Week!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had the most wonderful week at this summer cottage than we ever dreamt we would have. Our grandchildren, all seven them aged 7 - 17 never left there except for one day when we had a big celebration party with family & friends in downtown Burlington. They lived in the water 80% of the time using the paddle board and the canoe . Bon fire on the beach was the perfect way to end the day. Of course we were so lucky, the weather was perfect. I would definitely want to spend another week there when the time is right for my family to come together again for another reunion. Thank you Cunningham family, loved every minute of it.
