Overview

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

The historical apartment - on the second floor with private elevator - still fully furnished with the family's ancient furniture, is located in the the historic center, in the most ancient area of the town - Vergini district - and is part of a 16th century palace, still belonging to the same princely family who built it.

There lived, in the 18th century, the Great Saint, Alfonso de Liguori (August 1st on the calendar), Doctor of the Church and Founder of the Congregation of the Very Holy Redemptor, and in that area he started his apostolate.

The apartment, composed by two double-bedrooms (king-size and queen-size beds), dining room, living room, bathroom, fully furnished kitchen and huge panoramic terrace (90 mq - 1,000 sf), is in an area very well linked to everywhere (2 subways, 5 bus-lines and taxi rank) and offers many touristic attractions (Greek Hipogea of 4th century B.C.; Sacrarium of Fontanelle; Saint Gaudioso and Saint Gennaro's Catacombs; and many aristocratic palaces and important churches).

In five minutes walk, you can reach Naples' Cathedral, with the priceless Saint Gennaro's treasure; and the National Museum of Archaeology, with the finest pieces of Pompei and the wonderful Farnese's Collection.

By appointment only, it's possible to visit the Prince's apartment, composed by several reception rooms, a huge ballroom with 18th century frescoes on the ceiling and a splendid 18th century chandelier, a very important library with 16th - 17th - 18th century books, in which rooms the princely family regularly organizes cultural events as concerts, theater exhibitions and debates.

On these occasions, and especially by night, some ghosts belonging to the family have appeared and seemed to enjoy very much to be in company. :-)

About Francesco

We are still the princely family who owns the family's building.

We work in PR and we speak English, French, Spanish and German fluently.

Francesco purchased this apartment in 1500

Why Francesco chose Napoli

David Gepner (Germany)

Gianfrancesco's apartment is really as beautiful as it looks in the pictures. When we got to Napoli, we met up with his mother Paola, who gave us the key and showed us around. She is extremely friendly and helpful and provided us with invaluable assistance throughout of stay, making sure we got the most out of our trip, and Gianfrancesco was always available by phone, in case we had a problem. Our apartment, together with hers, occupies the entire third floor of a huge, family-owned, aristocratic building, right in the center of Napoli. The palace itself is very old, with very high ceilings (some frescoed) and huge windows. Our quarters were six rooms (including two bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom, which is accessed through one of the bedrooms) plus an enormous terrace which overlooks a marketplace district below, where seemingly all the locals went for their daily shopping. Needless to say, the food was sublime, with cheap quality groceries available in the shops on the street below and incredible restaurants scattered throughout the city. The city itself is extremely vibrant and full of history, and the surrounding countryside is some of the most gorgeous I've even seen (especially the Amalfi coast) . All in all we couldn't have asked for a better or more memorable experience, courtesy of Gianfrancesco and Paola. We will certainly be back!

Will Brag (S. Francisco - USA)

This rental made our stay in Napoli outstanding. I have to admit we were a bit skeptical about visiting Napoli but Paola (our hostess) was as charming as lovely as anyone could be. She put us at ease immediately and continued to treat us as family. We were sad to say goodbye to Paola but I am sure we will see her again. Now we have a reason to visit Napoli. The apt itself was as charming as Paola, filled with antiques and art. The very large private terrace was a great place to relax after a day of visits. Honestly, we can't thank paola enough for her sweet kindness!

Enchanting stay in Naples

  • 5 of 5

To stay in this apartment is like no other rental experience that my wife and I have ever had. From the moment of our arrival we were treated like old family friends and folded into Principessa Paola’s life, taken over to her side of the palazzo to see the old library, given welcome drinks and pastries. This breakdown of the barriers between owner and renters remained in effect throughout our stay, making our time here seem like a return to the house of an old friend or a relative. Our rooms (strictly speaking) were comfortable and charming and atmospheric with the added benefit of interesting art works on the walls which derived from friendships between Paola’s uncle (I believe it was) and some interesting 20th C. artists. The palazzo itself is located in rione Sanità, which is a supremely interesting Neapolitan neighborhood, throbbing with life from early morning until late at night. Markets and booths in the street selling food, clothing—just about everything anyone could ever need or want. Piazza Cavour (with its metro stops) and the great archaeological museum are nearby, but then so are many of the great Neapolitan churches. The apartment is ideally situated for serious art historical work in Naples. For those interested in adding some serious exercise (i.e. climbing), Paola will tell you how you can reach the great Capodimonte museum on foot. She will also keep reminding you of what monuments you need to go visit and on several occasions most graciously she took us to places that were not open to the general public. It was a particular thrill to gain admittance thanks to her to Palazzo Donna Anna in Posillipo for a private concert. And to be introduced to some of her interesting long term tenants, like the painter whose studio is on one floor and the theater and dance and circus troupes who use the beautiful rehearsal space on the primo piano of the palazzo. And (since we are dog lovers) it was gratifying to be caught up in her finding a better home for a neglected dog whom Paola was temporarily housing. The immersion in the life of a Neapolitan neighborhood was a gift that we could not have envisioned in advance. We were not newcomers to Naples, we have stayed before in many different parts of the city, but this visit took us farther into the heart of “la vera Napoli” than we had ever gotten before and remains an unusual highpoint of all our years of traveling in Italy.

A spacious apartment in a palazzo in old Naples.

  • 5 of 5

I wrote a lengthy review but forgot to add stars, so perhaps the two can be joined. Francesco's mom was a gracious hostess who took care to make sure I had information about all that might interest me in Naples. Much enjoyed the neighborhood, and my stay. Great location in a lively part of town with a group of food vendors a block away and a great pizzeria next door. Close to the archaeological museum.

Paola arranged for me to go with a preservation group led by an architect to see the interiors and historic underground structures of a number of buildings in the neighborhood. Fascinating.

Historic home in bustling Naples

  • 5 of 5

Francesco is very prompt and helpful. His mother Paola is a lovely lady who is as interesting as the palazzo she calls home. She made us feel incredibly welcome and had great advice. If she hadn't of told us about the Monteoliveto church we would have missed the incredible Vasari chapel, and her family tomb! The apartment is full of wonderful antique furniture and paintings. The rooms and beds are very comfortable. Located just outside the city walls, it's within walking distance of many sights. I can't wait to go back to Naples and I definitely want to stay with Paola again when I do.

Loved Naples and your great apartment

  • 5 of 5

The location was in the heart of Naples, the people, the markets , the museum .

Our hostess Paoula was as gracious a hostess that one coukd ever have, she was continiously checking up on us, giving us advice where to go, eat , shop and her reccomendations were always fantastic.

Her home is a palatial family palace and we were so priviledged to be shown it with her, such an honour.

I would highly recommend this aoartment to a couple or 2 couples .

Although there is only 1 bathroom it was still very workable and oleasant.

Thank you so very much

Formidable expérience au coeur de Naples

  • 5 of 5

A découvrir absolument!

Unforgettable!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for a few nights in August. I wish it had been longer. Both the city and this apartment are amazing.

Napoli has not fared as well as other parts of Italy since confederation. What was one of the oldest and richest kingdoms is now suffering from an undeserved reputation as a rather unsavory destination for tourism. It's too bad, because we found it to be a vibrant, noisy, cheerful, busy, and beautiful place. It is an ideal location for staging day trips to Vesuvio, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the incomparable Amalfi Coast.

The apartment itself is spacious and comfortable, and the very large rooftop terrace is a perfect touch. The private lift gives easy access, and the period furnishings give one a sense of time and place that is sadly lacking in modern hotels.

Our host was born a Princess into the family which built the palazzo. She is a force of nature....a Roman-born aristocrat who came back to Napoli to live, and who is working for the betterment of the community. Her advice and recommendations for sights and side trips were invaluable.

Napoli is the birthplace of modern pizza, and one of the best pizzerias in the city has been right downstairs since 1951. Fresh cornetti and coffee are right across the street from early morning on, and the National Archaeological Museum of Naples is a short walk away.

I can't think of a better place to stay, and recommend it to anyone who plans a trip to Napoli.
