For detailed information and for picture galleries with many additional photos please use the link to our Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas website.

Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas is a charming beach front villa located just 5 miles south of Mahahual. It is a tranquil place far from mainstream tourism and full of options for discovery, adventure and relaxation. Enjoy activities like swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, beach combing, or bird watching.

Our two-story vacation home has been tastefully decorated and furnished and is designed to accommodate up to six guests. It is rented as a single unit only. You never have to share our exceptionally wide private beach (210 feet) or its amenities with other guests! This is an eco-friendly, self-sustained house. Our water supply is maintained by rainwater collection and electricity is generated with a solar-electric power generation system.

The villa sits sea-side on an extraordinarily large (1.5 acre) and delightfully landscaped beach lot. It is very secluded and private. The caretaker casita, with the caretaker family providing assistance and 24/7 security, is in 150 feet distance from the main house and neighboring lots are not developed. For additional privacy and security access to the property has been restricted with lateral fences and a fence at the beach road. The beach road does not cut through, but is set behind the property in 200 feet distance from the main house.

The house has two full bathrooms with warm water showers. Downstairs the house features a large kitchen- living-dining area with a fully equipped kitchen. A beautiful catalox (a native hardwood) dining table and rustic spiral stairs around a hardwood tree trunk set special accents to this room. Custom-build very large arched mahogany windows open to the ocean side for unobstructed views and optimal ventilation. The tiled front porch is shaded by the balcony and is our favored breakfast spot. A seating area behind the house is accessible through the back door. Here you can fully enjoy the beauty of our lush tropical garden and jungle park and observe birds and other animals. It also provides tranquility and shade during exceptionally windy days.

Upstairs our villa features two cooling-fan equipped bedrooms, each with a double bed and a roll-out bed and one of the rooms with an additional couch. A small locker room for storage of suitcases and cloths also contains a security lock box for valuables. Independently from both bedrooms, you can step out onto our spacious shaded balcony, which is a favorite place for hanging out in hammocks and catching a fresh sea breeze during hot afternoon hours. It is also a great place for an unforgettable moonlight dinner and to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over the Caribbean Sea. Stairs from the balcony lead to the tiled rooftop patio, which offers panoramic Caribbean views. It is ideal for tanning during the day (nude sun-bathing possible here) and for fantastic stargazing during the night (hence the name of the house).

Our private beach has many fruit-bearing coconut palms and for additional shade we build a palm-thatched hut for guests to recover from the intense rays of the Caribbean sun. You can string a hammock to one of our Sea-Grape trees and relax listening to the waves or reading a good book.

Instead of converting our beach into a sand desert– unfortunately the common practice at most beach properties– we landscaped our beach by retaining and planting native salt-tolerant plants that interlace in large patches open sand areas. These patches are not only much more beautiful, but also prevent erosion and provide diverse habitats for beach-dwelling animals.

The drop off at our beach is very good and in contrast to other Costa Maya beaches you don’t have to wade through very shallow water for hundreds of feet before you reach greater water depths, but you can swim and snorkel directly from the beach. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in front of Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas is arguably the finest snorkeling site in the Mahahual region. Minimal tide action, the lack of currents and of high waves provide for safe swimming and kayaking conditions, even for beginners.

In addition to free bottled water, weekly changed fresh towels and linens, propane gas, board games, CD player, etc., we also offer special amenities to make a beach vacation enjoyable: These include the free use of kayaks, life vests and snorkeling gear, an outdoor grill and the availability of a large and diverse library that includes a comprehensive collection of Caribbean and Mexico nature guides.

Last but not least, our very friendly caretaker will be always happy to assist with your problems, questions and special needs and to help making your visit at Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas an unforgettable pleasant vacation.

About Rudolf Jung

We are two families from Germany (by profession a biologist, an artist and medical doctors) who previously have been travelling widely. Almost 20 years ago we discovered the enchanting beaches of south Quintana Roo, the area which is now called the Costa Maya. We came back to Mahahual every year ever since. In 1994 we purchased our beach property. After experimenting a few years with living on the beach in simple palm-thatched huts (palapas), we decided to build the house in 1999. Our experience with the local climatic conditions helped us to design a house that is enjoyable year-round and that can withstand strong tropical storms. Since 2001 we have been opening our villa for guests to rent.

Rudolf Jung purchased this house in 1994

Why Rudolf Jung chose Mahahual

First of all- we choose the Costa Maya, because we wanted a beautiful place that is as far as possible away from mainstream tourism, yet reachable from the US or from Europe within a reasonable amount of travel time. Within the Costa Maya area we looked for a property with good elevation, a good water depth at the beach that allows swimming, and a beach which has the barrier reef close to it and protecting it from high waves and currents. We choose our particular 210-feet wide and 300-feet deep lot for it mostly intact beach- and coastal jungle vegetation, because this gave us the opportunity to create -through careful landscaping- a lush tropical garden-park by maintaining native plants. Finally, this sparsely populated location 5 miles south of Mahahual attracted to us because it is close enough to town for easy grocery shopping and restaurant access, but far enough to avoid town tourist activities.

What makes this house unique

Our house is very secluded and private. The beach road is 200 feet behind the house, the property is 210 feet wide and neighboring properties are not developed. Since we never rent the house to a second party, guests will always exclusively enjoy our entire beach and our other amenities. The natural environment our property offers is without peers. A lush garden-park surrounds the house and is home to countless tropical animals and birds that can be observed. A freshwater pond is a special feature of our garden, providing drinking water for birds during the dry season and a breeding place for tree frogs. We maintain about one third of our 1.5 acres as a private coastal jungle reserve. Our land is therefore one of the few places in the Costa Maya with over 50 old-growth Chi’it palms (a protected palm, elsewhere almost extinct). Also our beach-area has been carefully landscaped by us and therefore retains beautiful patches of native salt-tolerant plants and flowers that not only prevent wind- and water erosion, but are also an invaluable habitat for beach-dwelling animals. The barrier reef in our area (5 miles south of Mahahual) is considered the best snorkeling site in the Mahahual area. Healthy coral gardens with huge brain and elk-horn corals and a large quantity of colorful fish and other marine life can be explored on the wave-protected side of this reef. Snorkel enthusiasts will appreciate our artificial reef, which can be visited in just 50 feet from the shore. While this site is easily accessible even by children or not so firm swimmers, it is teaming with almost all the same fish species that can be found in the barrier reef.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is a wonderful place to stay if you are looking for a quiet getaway, without the hustle and bustle of anyone else. The house is gorgeous, and the sea just outside of your door is even more beautiful. We spent a week here snorkeling and lazying around, trying to warm up midway through a Canadian winter.

The snorkeling here is great, although you need to get out to the reef to really enjoy it. The sea floor is littered with giant conches, while around you swim giant rays and colorful fishes. All of this in warm, turquoise waters just outside of your front door.

It should be noted, that the last couple of kilometers are a bit rough in a tiny rental car, but the slow drive really sets the pace your upcoming stay. You wind your way through a tiny village and then follow the coast with amazing views of the Caribbean, while freshly fallen coconuts litter the sides of the road. I think it just adds to the charm of the place, a truly quiet and remote getaway on the Caribbean.

Charming beach house

  • 5 of 5

The house was just the right size for our family of four. Off shore winds kept us cool through the night and the snorkeling was amazing. At the artificial reef right off shore there were eels, turtles, and all sorts of juvenile fish. At the reef 300 meters off shore we encountered rays, barracuda and all sorts of beautiful corals. The real sweet spot were the coral walls listed on the map at the house. Snorkled in 15-25 feet of water with swimthroughs, tons of fish and amazing coral.

Beach is perfect for snorkeling but a bit harder for the kids to play in. We ended up heading to to town and some of the other places up and down the beach road for places for the 4 year old and 8 month old to splash around in. The house was located close enough to town that this was no issue but far enough from town that we encountered no issues with cruise shippers and basically just had the beach to ourselves except for a few campers and other visitors all the way to the town border.

I would highly recommend this house for anyone who wants to get off the beaten track a bit and just relax. Quiet days and nights are punctuated by night vistas that are OUT OF THIS WORLD. We did a star walk every night with our four year old and he had never seen stars like this. They were GORGEOUS. Things to think about if you are renting, especially with younger kids, at least this time of year, is where and how to get them into the water, and then if walking the beach is your thing, this isn't the beach for you as there is much vegetation.

We will be back!

Wonderful relaxing vacation. listening to the ocean lull us to sleep at night was so romantic!

the grounds lovely - landscaping was the best! Many places to sit and read or lay in the sun. I especially loved the wood bench at the waters edge, many mornings with coffee in hand watching the sunrise. oh and the property dogs who we called Greta and Ruby - were so sweet! Once they got to know us..... no more barking. They greeted us every morning.

Darvey and his son Kevin were so attentive to everything we might need.

long beaches to stroll up and down. Wonderful snokeling once you get out a ways. the kayaks were so fun to adventure out on. the ocean was warm - we all swam everyday

Mosquitos at night though!

Mahahual was lovely to drive into and have dinner on the Malecon, not a lot of night life. pretty sleepy little town.

over all though, one of our most relaxing vacations ever!!!

Your own little paradise

  • 5 of 5

We spent 8 wonderful days in this quiet beautiful paradise. What an amazing home. A very clean, fun and interesting house. Everything you could possible need. Many places to sit inside and out. Garden area with tropical birds singing and iguanas roaming. Warm caribbean ocean at your doorstep. With the Yucatan becoming more and more crowded this area and home is a real find, last of its kind. We spend some days just hanging out and snorkeling to the reef and other days doing road trips to Lake Bacalar, Xcalack and the town where they have cool beach clubs. I have been to the Yucatan 6 times now and this is by far the best trip I have had. If you want a quiet paradise with some local adventures this is the place to be. And the house was so charming !!

Fantastic relaxing trip to southern Quintana Roo

  • 4 of 5

We spent 12 wonderful days @ Rudolf's home the end of January of 2017. The house fulfilled all of our needs and met our expectatlons. We cooked in and ate out equally. Darvey (the caretaker) was very helpful with our sightseeing destinations. He also brokered a kilo of lobster from a local diver for us, kept the grounds very clean although plastic washing on shore is an eyesore. This part of Mexico is still quiet. If you are looking for a relaxing do it yourself place I would recommend it to you.

Excellent Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was from December 16 to December 28th 2016. My daughter found this place and we both fell in love with the pictures and the ability to get off the grid for a little while. We both work very hard and long hours and it was such a pleasure to let ourselves unwind in the fabulous gardens and house. The gardens are just exquisite we had breakfast every morning in the back of the gardens and the birds were the entertainment. The environment is so conducive to the wildlife the Jung's have created a paradise. The view from the house in the front gardens and the ocean view is the best I have ever seen this rivals any 5 star resort. The roof top at night for star gazing was such a treat you can see the full Milky Way and we even saw shooting stars. We always had a nice breeze blowing through the house and the upstairs bedrooms and to hear the ocean every night was just sublime.

We did on our way down stop in Tulum at the Chedraui grocery to stock up on of course liquor and basic food items, everything else can be found in Mahahual at the local marts. If you don't see it then ask for it they can either get it or have it somewhere else in the mart.

Darvey and his family were very accommodating and helpful they kept the gardens and the beach raked and would even offer to bring you coconuts so you could drink the water and then open it so you can eat the rich coconut on the inside. Darvey also provided tips of the area for ruins to go see and other areas of interest. The dogs ended up feeling like family, they lounge around with you and enjoy your company.

The best restaurant is only 6km up the road to the Travel In, it is a wonderful place and the food is off the charts! The owners are fabulous and make you feel right at home. The menu is local but with an eclectic flair. We just loved it!!!!

The WiFi is in great working condition so if you want to connect you can, it was also great for the ipad to watch Netflix if we wanted. I can't sing the praises of this place enough...if you want time away this is the place! Please do yourself a favor and go and see for yourself.

Perfect Base Operation for our Fishing Adventure

  • 4 of 5

I wanted to take my son on a fly fishing adventure for his high school graduation and I had selected the Mahahual/Xcalak area for that adventure. This home was a perfect base for our daily excursions whether to the North exploring the beaches and ocean side flats or to the South to the Chetumal Bay area. We had inflatable stand up paddle boards and there was a wonderful patio area to stage our gear for each days adventure. The home has the most beautiful garden beach area that I have seen outside of a commercial setting and with no other homes around us we felt like we were all alone in the Mayan jungle. The design of the home with is thatched roof also added to that natural setting. Darby, the caretaker, was just wonderful and we felt very secure in leaving our gear out on the patio while we were away each day because the area is gated and Darby and his great dogs keep an eye on things. The only reason I have not given this home a 5 star review is that the kitchen area just has a two burner stove and some of the supplies for cooking and cleaning need to be updated a bit and the breezes from the ocean did not flow through the home as well as they could I believe because of the great garden trees and or perhaps the thatched roof over the 2nd floor deck. Both great features but perhaps cut down on the breeze that might keep things cooler but for a couple of fishermen neither of those situations hindered our visit at all. I would recommend this beautiful spot to anyone who wants to be a bit off on their own but close enough to a cute town to get to a restaurant once in a while.
