About Faye Hambrick or Debbie Rickman

My mother purchased this little cabin after extensive renovations were done in 2006. She lived and loved this home and enjoyed showing it off to anyone who wanted to come in and see until her passing in November 2012. Wanting to keep the home in the family we have decided to follow in her memory of sharing this home with others and make it available for others to enjoy. Her name was Shirley and the grandchildren called her grandma Squirrel. Hence the name Squirrels Nest.

Faye Hambrick or Debbie Rickman purchased this cabin in 2006

What makes this cabin unique

This home was originally located on the Blue Ridge Parkway and many years ago was moved to its current location by a mule drawn wagon. The home is now on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Nice house with very comfortable beds

  • 4 of 5

My family stayed at the Squirrels Nest from 10/12 to 10/15. We had a very nice stay and enjoyed the comfortable beds, campfire pit and quaint living area. I would recommend this rental to others, which is close to the Natural Bridge and the safari which we enjoyed during our stay. The kitchen supplies were basic for breakfast and lunch but lacking for a big dinner. Just stating for others to be prepared. Thank you for sharing your house with us. Location was ok, but property was way overpriced. Property was not clean. Also, old, broken, plastic yard furniture blown around yard.

Homey Historic Cabin on Busy Road

  • 3 of 5

I recently stayed here w/ my son, husband, sister, brother-in-law, & niece. We planned a weekend on the river & to visit Natural Bridge. The cabin is on one of the town's main roads which is pretty busy. The home is located next to a vacant home (a little creepy looking) & across the street from a large cemetery. The back yard over looks the town & you could partially see the river (but barely with the leaves on the trees); you do not have access to the river at all from the cabin's property. The river is accessible within a 5 minute walk or drive around the corner. The cabin comfortably seats 5 people in the living room. You can add a chair from the kitchen table for additional people but if you are relaxing in the evening, it is comfortable for 5. For the most part the cabin was clean. Bedrooms felt clean. Kitchen felt like it could have used a little more cleaning. We saw a few bugs inside but nothing that was alarming. The front porch, chairs by the fire pit, and back patio could have used some cleaning up but the fire pit area was a nice are to hang out in the evening. The sidewalk & front porch were covered w/ grass & spiderwebs. A little sweeping and washing down would have gone a long way. Kitchen table sat 6 people comfortably. The cabin is small but very homey feeling. The store across the street was great, they had a little bit of everything you could possibly need. The home was well stocked for the most part. Coffee, creamer, and sugar were provided which was very nice. Plenty of paper products. Lots of kitchen items which was helpful since we cooked meals. We wished we would have had a little bigger pot to cook in but other than that, the kitchen was nicely stocked. The cable was not great, so don't expect to watch a lot of TV. The cable had limited channels and had a lot of static. Their is a DVD Player provided that you could use.We overall enjoyed our stay. The cabin is historic and in a quaint town, even though the town looks like it may be struggling, we really did enjoy the stay. As long as you are not looking for the property to be secluded, you know the cabin is pretty close to a busy road, and you do not have river access from the property, then you will enjoy your stay. Faye was nice enough to check on us while we were there to make sure we had everything. I would rate the cabin about 3 1/2 stars. I would stay again if I was going to enjoy the river and not looking to be secluded.

Cute cottage

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was cute. The AC was great as it was a hot weekend. We rented the house for a tubing trip that was on the river below the house. Btw you can't get to the river from the back yard you ha e to cross the swing bridge and go to the bottom of the hill. There are not a lot of restaurant choices in town but if you are looking for a cold beer the Flood Zone was fun. The movie theatre is very cute. There were some bugs in the house but overall a quaint stay.

Well furnished and maintained cabin that will accommodate 4 - 6 adults comfortably. Great location if you want to enjoy the recreational aspects of the James River. Several canoe / kayak floats nearby.
