About Faye Hambrick or Debbie Rickman
My mother purchased this little cabin after extensive renovations were done in 2006. She lived and loved this home and enjoyed showing it off to anyone who wanted to come in and see until her passing in November 2012. Wanting to keep the home in the family we have decided to follow in her memory of sharing this home with others and make it available for others to enjoy. Her name was Shirley and the grandchildren called her grandma Squirrel. Hence the name Squirrels Nest.
Faye Hambrick or Debbie Rickman purchased this Cabin in 2006
What makes this Cabin unique
This home was originally located on the Blue Ridge Parkway and many years ago was moved to its current location by a mule drawn wagon. The home is now on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Very clean with everything that you need.
Property is on a busy “local” road but does not take away from the experience.
We very much enjoyed staying at the Squirrels Nest. The house has living room kitchen one bedroom and one bathroom upstairs. Downstairs ( basement ) has two bedrooms, one with a double bed the other with twin beds and one bathroom. Downstairs tends to be about 10° cooler than upstairs. Both bathrooms have stand up showers . Staying at the house was almost like staying at home, it was that comfortable. Faye stopped by to say hello and to share a couple of things about the house and the town. The best local place to eat in Buchanan is going to be the North Star. They tend to be really busy with local business, but in our opinion the food was worth it. It’s just a simple little diner but has large portions. The houses in between Lexington and Roanoke. It’s about 23 to 25 miles in either direction. This worked out fine for us because we hiked in Pembrooke Virginia at the Cascades, and then went to the Safari village in Lexington, and Natural Bridge. It was in a very convenient location. I have already recommended this property to several others. We would stay at this property again as well. Thank you Faye Hambrick !!!!!
Thanks for the great review. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We appreciate the recommendations and hope to have some of your friends stay with us. Please call on us again for future trips to our area.
Will be back!
Exactly what we needed and were expecting. Perfect location and just the right amount of space for our small group. Debbie and Faye were very responsive when we had trouble with the code. Thanks!
Nice little cabin in the hills!
Squirrels Nest is a nice little retreat! We enjoyed our stay! The owners were very accommodating for our group! We had a short, overnight stay to cut down our Christmas tree from Bedford Evergreens! And it just so happened that we were there for Buchanan's Christmas Tree Lighting! Such a nice little town!
We hope to come back in the summer and canoe this stretch of the James River!
Take the time to visit Fincastle Winery! The wines are excellent and reasonably priced! We brought home a whole case of mixed wines!
An Historic Gem in a Jewel of a Town
On behalf of my guest who traveled with me from Knoxville (Kori) and our close friends who joined us from Savannah (Sherry & Larry), I want to thank the owners again for opening up their "historic" and oh so cozy Squirrels Nest to us! We loved everything about the cabin and this area of Virginia, particularly all the extra things provided inside the cabin to make it feel more like home. A favorite for all of us was "front porching" and waving back at all the local folks who drove by and waved at us! What a friendly town you have!
After getting settled in Friday afternoon, we drove to Porters Mountain Overlook (which was absolutely beautiful!) and then on to tour Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest (the President's private retreat away from the stress of politics and the hustle and bustle of Monticello). Our guide was so very knowledgeable and our group asked some amazing questions -- we learned so much about Mr. Jefferson and the architecture of the property which is being restored. If you go to Poplar Forest, check out the two "essentials" on the property (brick outhouses set away from the main house that were well ahead of their time!).
On Saturday, we made it a full day of sightseeing and visited Black Dog Architectural Salvage in Roanoke (which is often featured by Knoxville's own HGTV channel!) and the stunningly beautiful Saint Andrews Roman Catholic Church. After lunch we went down to the swinging bridge in Buchanan and walked across it, taking some absolutely gorgeous photographs of the historic footbridge and the James River. Then we milled around Buchanan's quaint "downtown" area. I was lucky to purchase the LAST jar of Gross Orchard Pumpkin Butter (made locally and to die for!) at the Antiques store (Purgatory Emporium), and we all had treats at the Buchanan Fountain and Grille. NOTHING beats homemade shakes, ice cream cones, and cherry fountain cokes while playing a quarter jukebox! Our evening was spent grilling out at the cabin.
To top off our last morning in Buchanan, Sherry just had to try a fried bologna sandwich from the Hilltop Market right across the street from the cabin! There is not much better than this...except possibly to have stayed longer!
Many thanks to the owners for stopping by to see if we needed anything. It was great to find out firsthand the "history" of this 100+ year old cabin and how it ended up on the National Register of Historic Places. Don't overlook it!
