About Karen Vahling

I purchased the land in 2000 and JUST finished building the home. I moved here because I love the incredible natural beauty, simple life and friendly community. I work on the house and do nonprofit consulting and fundraising projects.

Karen Vahling purchased this villa in 2000

Why Karen Vahling chose USVI/St. John

I fell in love with St. John 20 years ago and always wanted to live here. It is the best island because it is 2/3 National Park and US territory. Coral Bay is unique and unspoiled, full of natural beauty.

What makes this villa unique

This property is unique because it is on a large parcel of land (over 1 acre) and has an expansive view from its large deck and all windows, overlooking the USVI and BVI with development-free Coral Reef National Monument in the center of view. Stargaze at the milky way with no light pollution, fall asleep to distant waves breaking on the reef at Johnson's Bay and tree frogs peeping. Wake to doves cooing, amazing sunrises over the islands and great gourmet coffee! Then hit the beaches or go kayaking in pristine waters - kayaks are provided for you at no extra charge! If you have more than two people, there is a sofa bed. An additional king bed unit is available, with it's own separate parking and entrance, based on availability. One unit up, one down. Completely private and quiet, with solid masonry floors, walls and decks. Over sized wooded lot on a knoll overlooking the sea.

Stunning views, luxurious amenities, great attention to detail

  • 5 of 5

This home is absolutely stunning! The king size bed is amongst the most comfortable I have ever slept in! In fact I want to order the same bed for my home. The kitchen is stocked with everything you need to cook a full gourmet meal and there's an outdoor grill. Beautiful stainless steel appliances. Comfortable indoor seating area as well as extremely comfortable outdoor seating areas. Great lounge chairs for sunning as well as cozy outdoor furniture set with overstuffed soft cushions perfect for enjoying a glass of wine at Sunset while looking down at Coral Bay, and Tortola, BVI. The bathroom is very thoughtfully decorated with a nice big shower and great water pressure! This home even has an outdoor shower! Great air conditioning that works very well as well as ceiling fans everywhere you need one. Every window and all three sliding doors have screens, so you can let the fresh Caribbean Breeze blow through without worrying about mosquitoes. Extremely spacious deck with several different comfortable areas to sit and enjoy reading, eating, drinking a glass of wine, or meditating. The space is very clean. Spotless! The pictures she has posted are beautiful, but they do not do the view or the inside decorations justice. Every detail has been considered. I was so comfortable during my stay, I cannot wait to go back! I highly recommend this villa to anyone visiting beautiful st. John.

Fabulous Stay!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have been to several Caribbean islands and our experience on St. John took the prize for the best stay! We rented the upper unit of this amazing house and could not have been more pleased with the facilities, views and overall welcome feeling we got from the owners. They shared activity ideas, gave us snorkeling gear, a cooler to use for our day trips, access to a glass bottom kayak and even offered to take us on an evening hike to Ram's Head. It was so nice to come back to a quiet, relaxing, and clean place after daytime adventures. We loved it and will definitely rent again.

Fabulous view, clean, comfortable, quiet,.

  • 5 of 5

This is a very comfortable place to stay. The views were to die for and extended to the east end of St. John and beyond to the BVI's. The stone shower is a work of art. The bed is top notch, and seating, both indoors and out, is relaxed and comfortable. We were hesitant to rent at first, as the owners live on the property, but that was a non-issue. We never even heard them. We could, however, hear the ocean below us. Wonderful spot!

Beautiful Home with Amazing Views!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Joy of Life Villa from February 20-29 and could not have been happier with our stay. We truly felt at home there. The house is beautiful and well equiped with everything you need. If you like peace and quiet then this is the place for you. The drive up to the house is a little intimidating the first time but you quickly get used to it and it is definitely worth the views! We watched the sunrise almost every morning from the deck and enjoyed viewing the night sky that was filled with so many stars. There was a steady breeze so never had to use the AC and it was nice to wake up to the sound of the ocean every morning. Both the indoor and outdoor showers were awesome! Karen and Jeff were great hosts. I cannot say enough about how helpful they were. Our favorite places to eat in Coral Bay were Aqua Bistro, Miss Lucy's, and Skinny Legs. There was great snorkeling at Grootpan Bay (recommended by Karen and Jeff), Salt Pond, and Waterlemon Cay. Our favorite beach was Honeymoon Beach. It's a bit of a hike to get there (unless you want to pay $20 to park at the Caneel Bay Resort...but you still have to walk down to the beach from there) but it is well worth it! Francis Bay Beach is also beautiful. If you are there during the full moon I recommend doing the full moon hike up to Ram's Head (another recommendation by Jeff and Karen...in fact they invited us along to go with them!) Another must do is hiking the Reef Bay Trail. Make sure you go to the pool to see the petropglyphs. The great thing about St. John is with an AWD Jeep you can go everywhere and see everything without having to go on tours. My husband and I are looking forward to returning one day (hopefully we can bring some friends) and when we do we will definitely return to Joy of Life.

Hardly needed to leave

  • 5 of 5

Of all the places we have rented for vacation over the years, this was the first that we felt had almost everything we could need for our days (and nights). We almost never left. Situated just past Coral Bay on the way to Salt Pond, the house is on the quiet side of the quiet side of the island. Sometimes live music from the restaurants below wafted up in the breeze which was fun but mostly it was the noise of the wind in the trees and the birds. The setting was fabulous, high above the water in the breeze with a wonderful view. The deck had ample spots for sunning or reading in the shade on very comfortable furniture. We did leave each day to go for a swim or snorkel or use the available kayaks but we would usually try to be back for sunset. Looking southeast you could see the beautiful light on the clouds and nearby islands even though the full sunset was blocked. We ate most of the time right there, outside on the deck. The kitchen was well equipped so easy to cook in. There was a big fridge and freezer. The bed was very comfortable and looked out on the sea and sunrise. While the road to the house is in good condition, it is steep and a 4x4 vehicle is probably necessary. (Just as a note, we rented a jeep from the airport and shopped in St Thomas and took the car ferry over. I believe this was a little less expensive.) The hosts, who live in the apartment below the one we rented were very helpful and quiet when they were there at all. The house isn't completely finished yet, someday there will be a third floor, so there are signs of construction, but once you walk down the steps to the deck you never notice it. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and will return if we can.

Wonderfully relaxing stay at Joy of Life Villa!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have just returned from two glorious weeks at the Joy of Life Villa. We absolutely loved the house and had such a wonderful relaxing time there. We were impressed with the quality and the thoughtful layout of the house and the views can't be beat. This was our third trip to St. John and Joy of Life Villa is, by far, the best place we've stayed.

We love to cook and the kitchen set-up works so well; all the appliances are high quality and work perfectly as does the outside grill. We've traveled to many islands and other places and have rented many villas and, in most cases, the kitchen has left something to be desired but not here. We only went out to dinner twice the entire time as the sunsets were too beautiful to miss and it was just so relaxing after a day at the beach to sit on the comfortable outside furniture watching the sunset and then head into the house to prepare dinner. And, if you're an early riser, the sunrises are pretty spectacular too.

Yes, we do recommend that you rent a 4x4 vehicle not only to be comfortable getting up and down the road to the villa but, overall, the island is pretty hilly and access to some of the best beaches is over some bumpy and rutted terrain.

Karen and Jeff, our hosts, were wonderful, thoughtful and caring making our stay even better. Thanks so much to both of you! We will be back and won't hesitate to let our friends know about the aptly named Joy of Life Villa!

Don't miss the best snorkeling at Waterlemon Cay, the tranquil beach at Maho Bay and a hike to the petroglyphs on Reef Bay Trail. Or, just relax on our deck and let the day slide by watching the sailboats and stargazing on clear, tropical nights.
