About Karen Vahling

Karen purchased the land in 2000 and saved for 10 years before starting to build. We moved here because of the incredible natural beauty, simple life and friendly community. I work on the My partner, Jeff, helped me build the house, is very handy to have around and a great resource for island info. The photo was taken in our driveway.

Why Karen Vahling chose Estate Little Plantation

I fell in love with St. John 20 years ago and always wanted to live here. It is the best island because it is 2/3 National Park and US territory. Coral Bay is unique and unspoiled, full of natural beauty.

What makes this villa unique

This property is unique because it is on a large parcel of land (over 1 acre) and has an expansive view from its large deck and all windows, overlooking the USVI and BVI with development-free Coral Reef National Monument in the center of view. Stargaze at the milky way with no light pollution, fall asleep to distant waves breaking on the reef at Johnson's Bay and tree frogs peeping. Wake to doves cooing, amazing sunrises over the islands and great gourmet coffee! Then hit the beaches or go kayaking in pristine waters - kayaks are provided for you at no extra charge! If you have more than two people, there is a sofa bed. An additional king bed unit is available, with it's own separate parking and entrance, based on availability. One unit up, one down. Completely private and quiet, with solid masonry floors, walls and decks. Over sized wooded lot on a knoll overlooking the sea.

Wake up to a beautiful view every morning

  • 4 of 5

Accessing the driveway feels like you might be driving off the end of the world, but once the hills become second nature you can kick back and really take in the spectacular view.

If you need to be able to stroll from your bedroom to the beach, this is not the place for you, as getting to the beach takes a little work, but navigating around becomes part of the adventure and the fun. The home is very nicely decorated and very comfortable. At the time of our visit, Coral Bay was transitioning back into modernity after storm recovery, so we were actually on a generator, which was not ideal, and did not have internet for the bulk of our stay (although this was restored ). Going forward, there should be no issues. The hosts are gracious and respectful. Do not hesitate to book.

The Perfect Honeymoon OR Anytime Escape

  • 5 of 5

Karen and Jeff, the owners of this incredible spot, have created the perfect escape off the "beaten path" that is St. Thomas and Cruz Bay, Saint John. We were so glad that we decided to go the "locals" route, and not use the all-inclusive resort option. Joy of Life Villa is the perfect name for this property. It is impossible to have a bad day here. The amenities, views, and overall hospitality created the perfect honeymoon for us. It has only been a few days since we returned to the States, but I wish every second that we could return already. We cannot wait to be back, and will always have Joy of Life at the top of our list.

A stay in a place like this? PRICELESS!

  • 5 of 5

What can we say but this is simply the best St. John villa if you want jaw-dropping views, super nice hosts, tasteful furnishings, great bed and all the little things thought of. The deck is so nice it's hard to leave. Hosts gave us great island and money saving tips. The kayaks and paddle boards included also make it a great value. We are booking our next stay already.

Just what we needed!

  • 5 of 5

After a very stressful few weeks we were looking forward to our time at Joy of Life- from the minute we arrived until we sadly had to leave, we were transported to another world. When we arrived after dark and getting lost(mostly our fault), we were greeted by Karen and Jeff who took time to show us around and make us comfortable. We awoke to a beautiful sunrise and only then did we appreciate the spectacular view from the villa- the place itself is spacious and comfortable and supplied with just about anything you would need . The kayaks provided were a real plus for us and we enjoyed checking out the mangroves at Johnson's Bay and meeting Thalia and Dunia at Hanson's Cove. The coolers were a big help when taking a picnic to the beach. Although we brought our own snorkeling equipment, the ones at the villa looked to be in good shape. We did the usual nights eating out but also cooked in a couple of times- the gas grill is great and doing cocktails on the deck was such a treat.Although there was work going on on the property, the owners were very considerate of our privacy and made the" real noise "when we were away. There was another couple in the lower half of the villa and we never heard them at all. All in all this was One of the most relaxing vacations we've had on St John- thank you Karen and Jeff!

Breathtaking views - an oasis on top of the mountain!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Joy of Life for our 5 Year Anniversary and it was exactly what we needed. We've already dreamed about how we can come back and bring the whole family! Jeff and Karen are very respectful and kind hosts - if you need anything they'll reply to you quickly - but will otherwise let you be and enjoy your stay. The bedroom is extremely comfortable and you can opt for doors/windows open to hear the tree frogs and feel the breeze, or there's a great AC. Not to mention, you can lay in bed and see the views of the water!! The kitchen had everything we needed to cook breakfast and pack lunches, we chose to eat out for dinner but could have cooked anything we needed. The living room is great, but we honestly spent all of our time out on the patio enjoying the view if we weren't sleeping or gone. There is another 1 bedroom unit downstairs but there is absolute privacy. Unless you lean over the edge of the porch to see the lower driveway, you will not see (or hear) each other at all. We never heard a cabinet slam or anything, concrete walls make great sound barriers!

We LOVED how close this villa is to the North Shore beaches, as well as the beautiful bays around the east and southeast side of the island (we fell in love with Salt Pond and Little Lameshur). We could be anywhere in 10-15 minutes. We also really enjoyed the vibe of the Coral Bay side of the island - super chill, friendly, and still amazing restaurants! And for sure, take up Jeff and Karen's offer to use their amazing glass bottom kayak, single kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards! Plus, they have snorkeling gear you can borrow, too. Lastly, you really do need a 4WD vehicle to get up the hill to the house but it really isn't bad - my husband had a blast driving up and down it and the views are WORTH IT!!!! We would not hesitate to stay here again and again - we have found our slice of Heaven in St. John!
