About the property

2 Bedrooms, pull-out bed in greatroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 5

Aloha! Ascend the 7 stairs at Mama J's Pond House. You may be tempted to walk to the end of the 300sq ft deck & check out the large private pond before entering this lovely Hawaiian style home. The greatroom is spacious w/ vaulted ceilings. Open some windows so you can hear the ocean. Get settled into 1 of the 2bdrms thru the archway on your left. There is a lightswitch on rt side of Arch Room to illuminate the pond whilst you unpack if you've arrived at night.

Each of the 2 bdrms has a king bed w/ new 100% cotton sheets & 4 pillows ea. 2 extra pillows, quilts & afghans on closet shelf in Arch Room.

Altho' ea bdrm is basically the same in size w/ nightstand, alarm clock, bedside lamp, Hawaiiana artwork, ceiling fan & a luggage rack, they ea have their own unique features.

Deckside bdrm toward front of house has screened sliding glass door opening onto the deck. It has a small closet for things you may need to hang up. The bed in here is actually a California king, 4" longer than a regular king.

Seaside bdrm toward back of house is a bit breezier w/ extra window affording peek-a-boo view of Wai Opae Marine Sanctuary. This is the side the sun comes up on but curtains are dark so you can sleep. It has its' own small balcony w/ 2 chairs & a table. Perfect for watching the sun come up on the ocean or having a bit of outdoor privacy if you are traveling w/ others. Altho' there is no closet in this rm, there are hooks on the back of the bdrm door and a small closet in Arch Room to hang your things.

You may smoke on deck or seaside bedroom's lanai using provided ashtrays. PLEASE shut the windows &/or door closeby to keep inside of our home smokefree. Mahalo (Thank You) for respecting our home concerning this rule.

The Arch Room is large and adds to the spacious feel of our home. There is a beautiful teak writing desk in there. Also a landline for Big Island outgoing calls. Use your calling card for long distance. As you will find w/ most places in Puna District, cell phone reception is spotty. AT&T seems to work best. This landline has been provided for your safety & convenience.

There is a regulation size ping-pong table in this room. Electronic plastic-tip dart board game at end of hall. See rules for some dart games in top drawer of desk.

Bathrm is big by Hawaii standards. There are 3 tiled stairs (please watch your step!) leading to a beautiful sunken shower stall. The shower has good water pressure. There are 2 small frosted windows in bathrm that may be left open for that peek-a-boo view of the ocean as you walk in. They are up high enough and no neighbor back there, you will still have your privacy.

There is a w/d in a corner of the bathrm. Bath towels are provided as are beach towels. Please take only beach towels (colorful ones on bottom shelf) outside of house. There is a laundry hamper behind bathrm door.

There is also an outdoor shower (coldwater only) to rt of front door stairs for rinsing off after the 5min walk to the tidepools. Hang your suits & towels on the clothesline at top of stairs so that they're ready to go again!

In the bathrm we have provided shampoo, bodywash and air freshener. They are all products w/ scent so you may wish to bring your own.

Kitchen has a 4 burner gas stove w/ oven. Service for 8. Ice-maker in freezer of the full size fridge. There is a toaster, 12 cup coffee machine, bean grinder, blender, microwave & pots n' pans. Think you will find everthing you need but may wish to inquire further if you are used to cooking gourmet meals. Salt, pepper, some basic seasonings, cooking oil and soy sauce provided. 1 roll papertowels, coffee filters, dishsoap & sponge provided. No auto dishwasher but there is a pretty peek-a-boo of the ocean out the kitchen window to make washing dishes less of a chore. Our water supply is from the city so it is safe to drink.

Weber grill on site, byo charcoal. Please no grilling on the deck but there is a lovely outdoor space close to the deck. Bbq tools provided.

There are four bicycles for making the 15min cruise to The Champagne Ponds. If you like more of a challenge, Ahalanui (also known as Millionaire's Pond) is slightly uphill but just a few miles away. Please always use the provided lock when away from the bikes. Tirepatch kit and airpump are in Archroom.

The greatroom (living rm/ kitchen) has 2 ceiling fans and lots of screened windows. Cool and breezy. Tho' it is wonderful to sleep w/ all the windows open and wake up to the sound of ocean, you may experience salty stickiness on the new laminate wood flooring throughout house in the morning. E komo mai (Welcome) to beach livin'! We have provided a dust mop and suggest wearing house slippers or socks as remedy to open air= sticky floor mornings. Or, shut windows before you retire & rely on the ceiling fans, extra plug-in pole fan & a Vornado air circulator provided.

Living part of room has comfy loveseat, reclining chair & 2 wide seat wooden arm chairs. The loveseat pulls out to bed for some more lounging room. Linens and extra pillows in Arch rm closet.

32inch hi-def TV w/ Blue-ray DVD player. You will receive code to access wifi upon arrival.

About 30 DVDs on our bookshelf. Many books pertaining to Hawaii, especially Big Island. There are also a few board games & playing cards in the drawer.

Beautiful hand-hewn kitchen table made in Indonesia from retired fishing boats seats 4. We have 2 padded folding chairs & 4 personal size folding tables to add to living rm furniture area for tv side dining. A table on the deck seats 6.

Now let's get to the real reason you are considering Mama J's Pond House as your base for all the Big Island has to offer...relaxing outdoors at your fairly secluded home away from home. We are located at the end of a cul-de-sac, seldom will you see a neighbor. The large front deck has lots of seating (see pictures) and overlooks your own private pond teeming with fish.

The hammock for one sets up easily & holds up to 300lbs. The light comfortable parachute material hammock is stitched in a way that you can pull it up over yourself for a nap. The sounds of the nearby ocean will lull you to sleep.

The large private pond is amazing. You may find yourself lost in meditation as you gaze at the fish. Watch the tide in the pond rise & fall. Many types of birds flit around the surrounding trees. You may even espy a mongoose. Water is clear unless it has rained hard the day before. Usually is clear again on next day.

For your safety, we do not allow swimming in our pond. It is a tranquil gazing pond. The water is clear and you may view the fish & bottom which is 7ft deep in some parts during high tide.

The pond's fish are self sustaining meaning that they survive on the many types of small crustaceans in this natural pond.

Wai Opae Marine Sanctuary as peekabooed from many of our windows and a 5 min walk away has the best snorkeling on all of the Big Island. We have 4 snorkels for your use kept on a shelf in Arch room. We have outdoor shower to rt of our front stairs for rinsing off. There is no shower at Wai 'Opae.

Surf, swim, fishing areas close by. Hotponds including Ahalanui 10 min drive & Champagne Pond 5min drive. Volcano National Park is 40miles away.

Altho' our home has a king & a Cal-king bed plus a pull-out sofa in living room, We think you will be most comfortable w/ 4ppl max. 5 ppl staying is our limit. Please respect, be honest when booking reservation ab amt of ppl that will be staying. We do charge a nominal amt for more than 2 ppl.

If there is a problem w/ anything during your stay or things not as expected upon arrival, please call Stan. We will find a way to make things right. Our nearby housekeeper/maintenance team will show up at YOUR convenience should the unlikely event that they are needed arise.

We take pride in our vacation home and would like to share our home with you. Mahalo Nui Loa (Thank You very much) for considering your stay at our little piece of paradise. Aloha! Jahnys and Stan

About Jahnys & Stan

Born & raised in Whittier, Calif, I moved to Oahu in 1981. My longtime partner Stan was born & raised here on Oahu. Owning our piece of Paradise in Kapoho is possible because of my Mom. We named the house in her honor, Mama J (Joyce)'s Pond House.

Our Hawaiian style home was blt in 1974 and remodeled in 2005. Many old school architectural features remain such as vaulted ceilings, blt-in cubbies & the Arch Room. The flooring & paint are new as is all of the furniture and most appliances. We have much pride in this house, it is for family & friends to get together on special occasions. We are constantly working on improvements...utmost is safety, cleanliness & comfort. We are proud to share our home for your getaway and have you find it up to our standards.

We want YOU to be as happy as we are when we stay here. We will be just a phone call away to answer questions and do what we can to make your stay more comfortable. In the unlikely event that something was overlooked during cleaning, please call upon arrival & we will make it right via our nearby housekeeper.

Aloha,

Jahnys and Stan

We enjoyed our time at Mama J's Pond House. It is spacious, comfortable and convenient to places of interest. Our friends who live in the area accompanied us to the Volcanoes National Park, The Tropical Botanical Gardens and walks on the lava fields.

The large deck overlooking the fish in the pond is a great way to relax on a warm day.

There are 2 masks w/ snorkel on this shelving. Also where you will find the hammock in the r/y/g color parachute material bag. Hooks to hang it up are the big eyebolt next to white closet on deck & kitty-corner post across. There are two 28qt/41 can coolers. We have found these practical to take on our shopping trips to Hilo (the food prices are more reasonable). There are 2 terry cloth bath robes for your use hanging on back of bathrm door. Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

I can't say more nice things about this gem of a rental in Kapoho, the wraparound porch with view of the idyllic peaceful pond, the bikes they have for getting to the snorkel areas, the nice neighbors! Also loved the nice modern kitchen (every kind of utensil for cooking you can imagine) and comfortable and clean bedrooms and a shower with amazing water pressure. You simply *must* stay here next time! The owners are great at communicating and touches like the bouquet of fresh island flowers on the table, coffeemaker and mini-library of Hawaiiana books were the icing on the cake of our tranquil and fun stay~

So Many Thoughtful Touches

  • 5 of 5

If you are thinking Mama J's is too good to be true - It's not, it is just like the pictures.

The house is huge and airy. At one point I thought about renting a place even closer to the water but it would have been baking and Mama J's has lovely shade.

The lanai is cool and wonderful, very few bugs. We spent a lot of time there watching the fish in the pond (tilapia btw) during the day and listening to the coqui frogs at night. We were always kept company by cute green geckos (like Geico).

A word about the frogs. There are everywhere in that part of the island. Driving down I thought there was something wrong with the car but it turned out I was hearing the frogs while driving with a/c running. They start up at dusk and fade out in a few hours. Some people may need earplugs to sleep; I could tune them out. (They are waaaay less irritating than the roosters in Kauai)

Like I said, Jahny and Stan have gone to great lengths to make the place special. There are 4 bikes, older, but obviously well maintained. A large library of Hawaii books of all kinds and a big DVD collection with some great eruption videos. There is also a huge collection of coolers, towels, chairs, snorkeling gear etc. I have never seen a place that provided water shoes before.

Everything was in good working order. The shower is a work of art!

To be even handed there are a few things. This is the tropics; there will be a few bugs in and out. It is not an expensive, exclusive resort, some of the neighbours (and their children) could get a little loud both late at night and early in the morning.

I can't wait to get back.

I have snorkeled almost everywhere on the islands and the tide pools are among the best. It's a five minute walk. Go on a high tide (ha) wear fins and get out as far as possible. Bring a camera since the water is crystal clear and shallow.

Its about an hour to Kilauea and a very scenic half hour on #137 to Kalapana to watch the lava. Rent a bike its a long boring walk but a short ride on a good gravel road all the way. Rent a real bike, not a direct drive as they don't have low enough gears for the hills. Leave at dusk, the bikes have lights.

Kaleo's Bar and Grill in Pahoa was a treat.

Stay on #132 where it crosses #137 onto the dirt road. 100 yards before the end turn right on the 4 x 4 road ( again ha!) over the lava to get to some cool and exciting entrances for snorkeling.

Have Fun

Owner's Response: Mahalo for such a complete review! Most of the fish in our pond are tilapia but at this time (occasionally a tidal surge will sweep some away or bring us new ones)there are also 4 colorful palani, about a dozen blue & black striped mamo, a school of 6 mullet & if you look hard...you may spot the lone puffer fish. Some guests have asked if it's alright to feed them. Altho' they sustain themselves on organisms occurring naturally in pond, you may feed them plain bread w/ no nuts or seeds. Koi pellets may be purchased at Walmart in Hilo, then watch the feeding frenzy! ~The coqui frogs can be music to some & annoying to others because yes, their whistling chirp is loud. You gave us a good idea of providing earplugs for our guests. ~To address the noisy neighbor issue mentioned here, we have a new family in neighborhood w/ 4 girls that are between ages of 6 & 13. Going to nicely speak to the parents & make sure they are aware of the 10pm-8am quiet hours in our community. Mahalo for the tips & your wonderful review. Jahnys n' Stan

Remote but close.

Everything you need to enjoy paradise! Only thing that could make this better would be a gas grill, not much into the charcoal thing. Thanks for all the amenities.

Great location and accommodations, house was very clean and had everything you could possibly need laid out (snorkel, beach stuff, pots/pans/spices, cooler, ect.). The place felt bigger in person than I had anticipated based upon the pictures. Owner communications were clear and concise, pleasure to rent. 👍👍

Magical place!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay at this awesome rental! The fish pond was the best, full of various tropical fish that love to be feed! And Mimi the gecko out on the deck would come running every morning to greet us, climb on us and eat out of our hands! Clean place with real Hawaiian decor and artifacts. The Hawaiian books and movies were a huge bonus that helped us appreciate Hawaii and all it has to offer!

We will be staying again and highly recommend it!!!

Thank you so much Jahnys and Stan for sharing!!!

Mahalo!

Light, bright and breezy

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay at the pond house! The house was open and airy, you could feel the Hawaiian breezes from every room! Sleeping to the sound of waves and coqui frogs was so relaxing, I miss that already! Bikes and grill were great amenities as we enjoyed exploring the nearby communities, beaches, and ponds. And we love to BBQ. House had everything for a relaxing vacation. I'm ready to go back!
