Space 1,000 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, private yard, in the heart of downtown, close to beach

This recently renovated 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom cottage is a part of Oceanside's history. Built in 1925, the house has a retro feel with mid-century decor and unique charm. There is not another house like it!

Enjoy all the comforts of home, including a stocked kitchen and private backyard with a deck, barbeque, fire pit, and private, enclosed space to bring the family pet! The backyard provides a great space for entertaining and hanging out. This property is ideal for groups or families looking to enjoy local sights and activities with a comfortable home to relax in after long days in the sun.

The downstairs master bedroom includes a queen size bed, mounted television and DVD player, desk, and private full bathroom. The second bedroom is located on the second story with a full bed, vanity, and dresser. The third bedroom is ideal for kids, with two twin trundle beds, so it sleeps up to four people (trundle can be raised to make a full size bed, if desired). The third bedroom also includes dresser, vanity, and small balcony with view of the ocean. The second full bathroom is located on the second story. It was added to the home last year, so it includes new floors, fixtures, and plumbing. Living room couch pulls out easily into a full bed. House sleeps up to ten people.

The location is ideal for those traveling without a car. The house is centrally located in the heart of downtown, with shopping, movies, restaurants, bike trails, parks, beaches, pier, harbor, library, cafes, bars, clubs, etc, all within blocks. Oceanside is a small, lively city with great local events like the weekly Sunset Market, farmer's markets, concerts, monthly Art Walk, parades, and triathlons. It is also centrally located for quick access to Legoland, Disneyland, Wild Animal Park, Sea World, etc.

We vacation here often with our own family, and it definitely has a little something for everything.

About Rachel Witt

Jerry Witt purchased the house with his son, Jason Witt, for his own personal use when he comes from Northern California to visit his children and grandchildren who live in the area. While he's away, Jason and his wife Rachel manage the property as a vacation rental. Jason and Rachel travel a lot, but when they are in town they live in the studio next door. The Witts love Oceanside, particularly for its character and history. They love to go on hikes nearby with their dogs, walk the pier at night, go to the beach, sift through antique shops on the 101 highway, or enjoy craft beer at one of many local breweries.

Rachel Witt purchased this house in 2013

Why Rachel Witt chose Oceanside

The house has unique character that gives travelers the feeling of vacation, of getting away. At the same time, because we live here part time, we've equipped it with all the comforts of home, including all the necessary kitchen items and spices, beach toys and towels, barbeque, etc. We get to enjoy the privacy of our yard with our pets, surrounded by beautiful foliage, but with the city right outside the door. You could live here and never need a car! In researching the house, we discovered that the original structure was built in 1925 by the Richardson Brothers. It was their first home before they went on to build some of Oceanside's iconic structures, including the local Star Theater and First National Bank. The house is truly unique, and we tried to preserve its original charm in decorating it. Of all the properties in Oceanside, there is nothing quite like this house. It is one-of-a-kind.

What makes this house unique

We've lived in Oceanside for five years, and we share all of our favorite places and spaces with travelers in our guest book--from the best happy hours, to the best Taco Tuesday specials, we've got the inside scoop! This house provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy everything that southern California has to offer. If you wanted to, you could pack your days with going to the beach, eating out, grabbing drinks, seeing movies, going shopping, perusing street fairs, catching concerts--and all without getting in a car. Want to stay in? The living couch pulls out into a bed with the tug of a handle. Load up the couch, pop in a movie, and you've got a comfy spot to waste the day. The backyard is also unique, because it's like a little oasis completely enclosed from the rest of the city. Throw on your suit, blend up a Mai Tai, and let the vacation begin.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the convenient location--close to the pier and beach! The house was perfect for our group of 5 adults and 1 dog. We were also able to add one more adult on our last night of the stay and still be comfortable. We hung out in the yard and had a fire one night. Mostly it served as a great home base. We took two "field trips"; one to San Diego for a day and one to the Stone Brewery World Bistro--well worth the trip! Oceanside itself is a fun vacation spot too-we loved the Thursday markets and ate both breakfast and dinner there. Yummy food and good vibe!

We were there the week between Christmas and New Years and thought even in high season, this was a very reasonably priced place to stay.

Very cozy and cute!

  • 4 of 5

The place was a little more cozy than I expected but it was still the perfectly cute place. We had 10 people total which was just enough room for everyone. However, the trundle beds we're a bit rough on the back. Perhaps fine for a child but not necessarily a grown adult, but we made due! The back yard was so freaking cute and we had purchased a bunch of firewood and just hung out there most of the nights. The house is a bit old so everything isn't in perfect shape, but We still all had a great time. Thank you so much letting us stay!

Perfect walking distance to restaurants and beach

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great time at the cottage in Oceanside. It was a 10 min walk (slow walk w kids in tow, so adults could go even faster) to the beach and pier. The cottage had plenty of boogie boards and sand toys for the kids, which was really nice. We liked being close to the restaurants and library, lots of theater productions and movie theatre. The cottage is "cozy", but we actually didn't feel cramped with 2 adults and 6 kids, and everyone was comfortable. The outdoor space was awesome as well, much better than the condos closer to the beach (and less expensive). We grilled dinners and roasted marshmallows and kids ate and played games in the private backyard. Also it was a short drive to legoland. Overall, a great place to stay for families or couples and we hope to be back!

The house is amazing. We enjoyed every minute of it. It was our fist time staying at a home instead of hotel and we will not go back to hotels ever. The yard was perfect for kids. They could run around and were locked in. There was everything we needed and more. The owners were way nice and gave us tips and were so quick responding to my questions. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us. The kids want to come back next year. :)

Good, Good, Good Good Vibrations

  • 5 of 5

While natives of this part of the country can attest to the following descriptions as common, I, as a Chicagoan visiting the mythical land of Southern California for the first time (Go Bears), cannot speak highly enough of this cozy, gentle and soothing residence. The word therapeutic comes to mind.

Upon pulling up in my Uber, I estutley notice the well fenced area around the house itself. "Perfect," I thought. Nobody needs to see in the stuff we were going to do...

My wife and I were the only married couple in our group of fellow mid-westerners, so by default we got the bedroom with single queen bed and the attached bathroom. Fresh sheets saturated with the aroma of the salty Pacific air await your slumber. The bathroom had two sinks and nothing saves a marriage like two sinks and a big bed. I assure you, dear reader.

The front room, decorated with a modern Cali style, opens up into the dining area. Plenty of space for a dinner at the dining room. However, eating inside is for suckers in this part of the country. The dining area has two french doors that open into the true highlight of the dwelling. The backyard.

As I opened the doors I swear it was like opening Marselles Wallace's briefcase, white doves start flying in slow motion, "Pet Sounds" immediatly starts playing in the near distance and you feel like maybe this could be heaven...

The yard is garnished generously with the kind of West Coast vegetation that looks extra terrestrial to sheltered Great Plains folk like us. The prehistoric looking plants and palms are the kind that Cleopatra was fanned with by slaves. Very luxurious.

The deck is large and is bordered by a bar clad with stools perfect for those neon colored drinks with little umbrellas you are sure to have. It is illuminated by strewn lights (with surprisingly big bulbs radiating refreshingly non-fluorescent light) and there is a fire pit (with an assortment of sturdy chairs surrounding it.) At the other end of the yard is a love seat swing for when you have to "drunk talk". I was delighted to see a set of beanbag boards and bags as well as a gas grill, because I was afterall a product of the tailgating breed and we in Chicago have got that down to a science.

The washer and dryer are convenient but I was too busy having fun to wash ANYTHING let alone clothes. If (and I hope this review has rendered that a "when") you come say hi to the canine landlord Buddy. He is a treat to have around. Cannot recommend enough.
