Other things to note Welcome to The Ball Family Farmhouse
More than a century ago, this farmhouse became part of the Indiana countryside. Many decades later, we restored it because of a lifelong love for Culver—a place where summers were spent learning to water ski on Lake Maxinkuckee, attending Woodcraft Camp, gathering with family, and slowing down enough to appreciate life's simple joys.
Our family's connection to Culver goes back generations.
In 1944, William Hudson Ball, son of William Charles Ball—one of the five Ball brothers who founded Ball Corporation—purchased a cottage at 1746 East Shore Drive on Lake Maxinkuckee as a gift for his wife, Agnes. She had recently lost her mother, and he hoped the cottage would give her a peaceful place to retreat, grieve, and heal.
It also gave William and Agnes a home in Culver while visiting their son, William H. "Bill" Ball Jr., who was attending Culver Military Academy.
That cottage went on to become much more than a place to stay. For more than 80 years and four generations, it has been a gathering place for the Ball family—a place for summers on the lake, family meals, water skiing, laughter, celebrations, weddings, and countless memories.
Today, we have the privilege of sharing that home with other families as a vacation rental called by it's historic name "The Aubenaubee Lodge," so they too can experience Lake Maxinkuckee and create memories of their own. It is an honor to share a place that has brought our family so much joy.
The Ball Family Farmhouse is a newer chapter in that same story. Throughout the farmhouse, we've included small touches that reflect our family's history, including vintage-style Ball jars and a copy of Ball Corporation: The First Century on the coffee table. The book tells the remarkable story of the five Ball brothers, including William Charles Ball, our great-grandfather, and the company they built together. These details are our way of connecting this old Indiana farmhouse with a family story that has been intertwined with Indiana—and with Culver—for generations.
We hope your family finds the same peace here that ours has found in this special corner of Indiana.
Whether you're visiting Culver Military Academy, exploring the lake, sharing meals around the table, or simply watching the sunset over the old barn, our wish is that this becomes one of those places you'll remember long after your trip is over.
Welcome to our happy place.
