About this property

Comfort, great views 110kms from Barcelona on Route of the Cisters

Located on the outskirts of a historical picturesque farming village, which itself is situated on a mountain-top overlooking the beautiful wide valley of the Conca de Barberà in the northern limits of the province of Tarragona, where we offer you B&B-style accomodation, more-or-less vegetarian and non-smoking, in a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. We offer an excellent self-service style breakfast 8€ a head.

In the lounge you will find a scrap-book, full of information on places to see and visit, a walk or a short car ride away.

The house is equipped with solar-heated hot water, which has electric back-up in case the sun doesn't shine in more than 2 days, which is extremely rare. There are either summer or winter duvets on all the beds. The windows are fitted with anti-fly screens, and there are virtually no mosquitos in the whole village. Each guest is provided with a hand and shower towel, which are checked before departure, as is the kitchen equipment. The flushes in the 4 separate WC's and the water taps are fitted with water-saving devices, and the central heating is a special low-consumption electric system. There is a big satellite dish, so in the visitor lounge, (shared by the 4 double bedrooms) the TV receiver also has Chromecast which with the good optic fibre WiFi, means that you can see anything you like in the world

The great advantage of staying up in our village and not down in the humid sweltering heat of the coast in summer, is that although it may be as hot outside as the coast on a very sunny day, in the evening there is a delicious freshness, when one can open the windows and let the cool into the house, keeping them closed during the day, as the very thick stone walls of the house keep a steady temperature of 23-25ºC in summer and with the heating on the rest of the year at a steady 18-20º.
Setting
This being a mountain-top village, there are unparallelled views over the wide valley of the Conca de Barberà right the way down to the sea 50kms away, and from behind the village we see the whole long chain of the Pyrenees, covered in snow except in summer.

So apart from a walk up to the top part of the village for the views and to visit the 1000-year-old Romanic church and wander round the old village, or taking a walk in the local countryside to visit the ancient spring or to pick aromatic plants, there many interesting visits to be made locally.

Our place is in the lower part of the village, which avoids being shrouded in clouds as is the top part when it's cloudy, but just as cool in summer, and is at more or less the same altitude as several local places that can be cycled to along the tracks improved by the windmill installers. The windmills provide great wondering for younger visitors, and although initially their presence scared off most of our local eagle population, recently we have been noticing the return of soaring great birds of prey in the skies over the Conca..

We are very lucky to have a few minutes drive away the brand-new 5-star thermal spring establishment of Rocallaura, extremely well-equipped and guaranteed to make you feel a new person in two hours. We have multi-ticket entries which reduce the price from 26 to 20€ all-in. We have also installed a foot-massage and steam sauna therapy cabin on the ground floor next to the yoga room; afterwards you feel better than taking a shower. Cost 5€ per half-hour session.

With the village strategically situated on the Route of the Cisters, and the public rambling route GR Saint James' Track passing in front of the house, giving easy access to the 3 famous historic monasteries, Santes Creus, historically fascinating, Vallbona de les Monges, quaint and still functionning, and Poblet, beautiful and much-appreciated. 50 km. away from Tarragona and its wonderful beaches. 115km from Barcelona.

There are two ways to have an interesting and pleasant stay with us: being accompanied, or under your own steam. So, unless you come in your own car, you will be met at the airport (Reus the nearest) and helped with accepting a hire car (best booked previously), and we will show you which routes to take. Or, being accompanied, when we will meet you at Reus airport with our 9-seater VW, and once lodged, we will take you to visit nice places in the afternoons. In the mornings you can take walks nearby or round the village, or stay and rest or study in the relaxing atmosphere of the house.

Apart from visits to the Cistercian monasteries, which get many emotional, there are spectacular caves in Espluga of Francoli, an equestrian center for horse-riding, 20min drive., the Museum of Rural Life, in several villages there are modernist cellars, with well-known wines of origin; at 6km is a luxury thalassotherapy center (15 € / 2h), 15 km the Toy Museum, A historical area, beautiful natural spots for bike rides and walking, and especially the excellent local cuisine, not expensive at midday during the week (13-15€) with the beautiful beaches of Tarragona at 50km.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

We are vegetarians, except we do eat fish (which is delicious in restaurants around here), so we'd prefer you didn't cook meat in our home. If you cannot do without, we don't mind you keeping some sausage or ham in the fridge in your kitchen, Your past of the house is for is for you to feel completely at home in. Non-smoking house And in general, all that is consideration for others to share the same building. We take via this website initially € 80 deposit, which is returned after you return the keys, having found the towels, bedding, etc., with no loss or damage. Damages will be charged at a commercial rate, as it is very expensive to get work done in this isolated area. As guests have the entire floor to your own enjoyment, there is a charge of 30 € for final cleaning, unless all guests leave it reasonably clean. Reasonably clean means that afterwards it will only take about an hour to make it perfect before other guests can arrive. If it needs several hours cleaning, a cleaning lady will have to come, which costs 30 €. The staircase is rather high, so to avoid problems, any child 7years or less must be escorted in and out, up and down the staircase. We need you to sign that we have warned you to take care on the staircase, and when opening the front door, which is heavy, for insurance purposes. We can send you that beforehand. For those with mobility problems, there is a bedroom on the ground floor near the door, with a bunk bed, and its own luxury bathroom. Consult before bringing dogs; only small lap-type dogs are practical

Although we purchased in 2007, it took me until 2012 renovating this old stone farmhouse before it was ready to receive guests. We paid particular attention to detail, and everything is as eco-logical as possible; the electricity is made from nearby widmills, the hot-water is solar-heated, and we have water-saving devices. Having spent half of my life travelling all over, it's time to settle in one place, and receive guests instead of always being the guest.

Why they chose this property

Being very well strategically situated, in an area of great cultural wealth (Route of the Cisters), not far from the beautiful beaches of Tarragona and near the foothills of the Pyrenees, this classic-style construction of the Catalán 'más' or farmhouse, is very solid and insulates agianst cold in winter and keeps cool in summer. We chose this village because of its historic famous references and its impressive views, as it's known as the Look-out Point 'el Mirador de la Conca', looking out over the vast valley of the Conca de Barberà, full of interesting places to visit, and with views from the yachts on the sea near Tarragona, to the skiers on the ski-slopes of the Pyrenees, on a clear day.

What makes this property unique

Useful as a base to visit the monasteries of the Cister, the unique museum of Modern Art in Verdù, the spectacular caves in Espluga de Francoli,, the famous Art-Nouveau bodegas in nearby villages, the Gaudi centre in Reus, the mediaeval villages, or the beautiful beaches of Tarragona and Salou (Port Aventura)
