Why Peter Perkins chose Gold Country & High Sierra

Ten years ago Peter Perkins and Catherine Ione-Perkins came upon their present day home, the Casa del Campo--a diamond in the rough located at the end of a quiet country lane near Grass Valley, California. Comprised of a main house, a guest house and a variety of out buildings, set on several acres featuring open spaces and old growth forest, the property had the bones of greatness--it just needed some loving and purposeful attention. With the creative inspiration of a brilliant local craftsman, the willingness to learn and innovate, and no small amount of artistic vision on their part, Peter and Catherine undertook the process of transforming the houses and land, room by room, yard by yard, into a unique and exciting testimony to what is possible with sincere good intention. Still a work in progress, the Casa is a vibrant canvas, constantly evolving--a spiritual place of positive energy, a fun and relaxing place to rest and plan each day.

A truly relaxing, comfortable respite!

  • 5 of 5

The Casa is great place to get away and enjoy nature in a beautiful, clean and guest house where all the little details have been meticulously and tastefully taken care of. Peter and Catherine are terrific hosts who will help you with a smile and a solution to your needs. The Casita Fresca where we stayed was spacious, the bed comfortable and all the descriptions very accurate. We will be back and would recommend to friends and family.

Not enough stars and I rarely write reviews

  • 5 of 5

I rarely write reviews, but I am making an exception for Casa Del Campo. I am million mile club member of a major airline, so I have stayed in many places over the years. When other members of my family visit this area, this will be my first recommendation. I recommend Casa Del Campo for any individual or family.

For basics, I stayed at the Casita Fresca and it gets an 11 on a scale of 10 for cleaniness, spaciousness and comfort...and the grounds are delightful.

The host and hostess are warm and friendly, knowledgeable of the area, and happy to spend as much time with you as you want. They are extremely proud of the space they've created and it shows in every detail...including the artistic touches throughout the property.

I stayed only one night, but both Casita Fresca and Casita Mexica are suitable for much longer stays. They have full kitchens and dining spaces. The grounds are open to guests and there are plenty of places to relax with a cup of coffee or dessert after supper.

Beautiful grounds in a beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Casa del Campo for just one night with my boys earlier than this stay. We live close enough that one night felt fulfilling but the owners were so hospitable, the Yuba River so magical, and the studio so charming that we came back for a few more nights. The owners (including Boo and Marley) are very warm, welcoming, friendly, and helpful. As far as the grounds, there is a lot of beautiful and artistic detail at every angle, most, if not all, is custom work by the artistic owners. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. We went to see what swimming in the Yuba River would be like and found this little place that we will return to again and again...

Creative, inspirational, friendly hosts

  • 5 of 5

If you want to be surrounded by peace, quiet, natural beauty, and an environment infused by creativity, this is the place for you. Our stay in the Casita Fresca was everything we could ever hope for. The apartment was very private and was beautifully and creatively decorated by our hosts, Peter and Catherine. These two imaginative folks have devoted themselves to reimagining the things they see around them, and they have succeeded marvelously. Their property is a testament to what can be done with a little (or should I say "a lot" of imagination. For example, an old aviary becomes a beautiful, restful retreat for reading or just being. A goat shed becomes a meditation room. The whole place gives a peaceful, tranquil feeling. Our hosts were friendly, welcoming, and lots of fun to chat with. Although we couldn't spend as much time at the Casita as we would have liked (we were in town to visit family, so we spend most of our time with them), we felt like Casita Fresca was our home away from home. We will definitely be back!

Welcoming Oasis of Beauty & Tranquility in the Pines a Few Minutes From Town

  • 5 of 5

Casita Fresca was exactly that, and so much more. Even during a heat wave with highs in the upper-90s, the casita remained cool and comfortable by employing the common sense of closing drapes & windows while out during the heat of the day, a ceiling fan to keep the air circulating. Returning to the casita at day's end, it really felt as though gentle air-conditioning was on. Quite amazing!

Beyond that, the welcome extended by Peter, Catherine and their 2 friendly and extremely well-behaved dogs was genuine and heart-warming. A tour of the incredibly beautiful grounds with invitation to use the many comfortable and soothing areas they've created was accompanied by a running commentary on how they achieved it (amazing what can be re-purposed, and to what effect!), along with recommendations about the area: where to hike, drives for great views, restaurants not to miss, etc. There were thoughtful items left in our casita too - snacks, maps, and books on the area for us to borrow. Further suggestions were freely given each morning when we had coffee with them and discussed the day's plans.

The Casita itself was gorgeous - spotlessly clean, imaginatively decorated (Catherine is a genius with fabric, mozaics, color), spacious, cool and super-comfortable; we slept better there than anywhere else during a 3-week trip. Perfect silence at night, and venturing outside we saw a million stars including the Milky Way spilled across the sky, the only sound the soothing trickling of a fountain. The bed was wonderfully comfortable, bedding beautiful and of high quality. When the evening was warm, the ceiling fan kept it cool in our Casita. Beautifully decorated in cool green & white hues encompassing tile work, fabrics, cushions, the casita is composed of a huge central room with sleeping alcove, sofa plus 2 chairs and coffee table, kitchenette with dining table, plus a TV corner with satellite tv (too many channels to explore!) and 2 chairs. There was a walk-in closet and a big bathroom, a wonderful walk-in shower with great water pressure and no lack of hot water. Towels were big, soft & fluffy. A variety of shampoos, lotions & homemade soaps were thoughtfully provided.

While we were there, wifi connection was spotty but Peter let us borrow his computer to check in for a flight & print boarding passes, and a nearby cafe with tempting pastries offered fast & free wifi so we stayed connected. Highly recommended, we'll be back!

Gorgeous Garden Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a very relaxing stay at the Casita Fresca, a tranquil space to soothe the busy mind. The decor is beautifully handcrafted and seems to make the large room at one with the garden. Although it is the lower of two units it is wonderfully light and refreshingly cool. The kitchenette is well laid out and I had no problems cooking dinner each night of our stay. The gardens surrounding the casita are delightful, with many different seating areas and plenty of shade for warm days.

The hosts, Peter and Catherine and their furry friends Boo and Marley, were an added enhancement to our stay. We were warmly greeted and then toured around the whole property, so we feel at home there. Peter lent us a book on local hikes, which resulted in a great walk near the Donner Pass. If you need anything they are available and very happy to help.

If we are in the area again we would happily stay at Casita Fresca.
