About the property

Private, Quiet Lodge With Beautiful Mountain & Lake View

Payne Lake Lodge (20 minutes east of Waterton National Park) is only 2 miles off the beaten path (highway number 5) yet perfectly sequestered in the hills just above the well know fisherman's Payne Lake. It sits on nearly a quarter section of treed land just waiting to be explored and enjoyed. With ponds and ATV trails, paddle boats and canoe, your family is sure to have a great holiday.

It is rare to find affordable accommodations big enough to house more than one family. That's why we are unique and one of a kind. We are typically rented by family reunion groups but we also rent to small families or groups to. . We also have a cabin that holds up to six to eight people that can be rented separately. You may look at it on vrbo.com/69699 and even another large lodge 3 km down the road that sleeps another 20 persons vrbo.com/722581 and is very lovely with great mountain views and right on the highway

A full lodge booking (all 8 bedrooms including basement) is $850.00 per night plus taxes. All prices are before taxes. The cleaning fee is 157.50 including tax. Though there is a cleaning fee our customers are still required to do a basic clean up before their departure. We provide a check list for this.

Priority is given to customers booking the full lodge and can be booked 2 years in advance. We do take one night bookings during the week but on weekends we require at least two nights.

We have 8 bedrooms with TWO large beds in each room as well as two futon couches, queen bean bag mattresses and two single beds. There are four bathrooms - one between every two bedrooms as well as a half bath. There is a lovely grand piano in the great room for musicians to enjoy. A speaker and mikes can be rented from us as well if you need to present programs and entertainment. Our rec room has a full sized pool table, foosball table, t.v.s for DVD and video. Our fully equipped kitchen with two stoves, two fridges and another small kitchen in the basement makes handling large groups easy. There are multiple tables, chairs and sitting areas. There are five picnic tables on the deck with BBQ and a fantastic view overlooking Payne Lake and the Mountains. A fire pit, horseshoes, volley ball net and boats are included.

Most people rent this property because it is close to the famous and beautiful Waterton National Park but we have had customers tell us they loved just spending time at the lodge enjoying the pond, boats and exploring the hills.

This lodge is set up to accommodate upwards of 40 people plus customers are allowed to bring R.V.'s and put up tents for a very minimal charge.

Towels are provided, folded sheets sets are placed on each bed for your use, garbage bags, toilet paper, hand soap are also provided. There is a laundry area which can be used for two dollars per load and customer provides own detergent.

It is our goal to make you feel completely at home and comfortable. Families come back again and again because it is simply one of the best locations, best priced, most accommodating large group facilities in the area. And..... there is SO MUCH TO DO in this little corner of Alberta! You and your family will love Payne Lake Lodge.

About Cheryl Davidsen

We are Eugene and Cheryl Davidsen and have managed Payne Lake Lodge for 13 years now. I (Cheryl) was born and raised here in southern Alberta and grew up in Mountain View. Payne Lake Lodge has an interesting story. It is owned by a wonderful Japanese lady named Yumi who still resides in Japan. She purchased the property back in the '90's when she came to visit Canada. In Japan she had met my nephew who was was on a two year LDS mission there. After his mission ended she requested to visit Canada. She fell in love with the land and was in awe at the wide open space of Alberta. She decided to purchase property and build a lodge. Though it took several years to complete, it has always been a spot for families to gather. As more and more people hear about the lodge it's booked many times two years in advance. But there are always spots for last minute bookings as well.

Why Cheryl Davidsen chose Cardston County

Families love this facility. It is in a private beautiful spot. You feel all to yourselves yet you are not that far away from the main stream. It seems to be in a perfect location only 20 minutes from several main attractions including- Waterton, Cardston, Great Canadian Barn Dance and even the U.S. border where the Glacier Parks are located. For families and friends to rent a large enough facility in Waterton, cost would be high. Many times you do not find a place that can keep everyone under one roof with a large enough room to all gather in. Imagine playing, singing and laughing to your hearts content. Imagine writing up an itinerary of amazing fun activities for your family event and only minutes away; hiking, biking, dancing, attending live theater, horse trail riding, ATVing, boating, swimming, fishing, old fashioned horse carriage rides and much much more. Imagine putting on programs in the lodge with a sound system for your entertainers in the family. Imagine doing treasure hunts, games, paint balling, water sliding; the ideas are endless for you and your family to have a hoot! We've had families bring in their own ATV's, their own play grounds, their own games, their own horses, even a train of carts pulled by a sit down lawn mower. Mini water slides can be made to slide down the hill right by the lodge. The field is big enough and flat enough to even have a great game of softball. In the winter you can skate on the pond and sled down the road. It's fantastically fun.

We have loved taking care of Payne Lake Lodge. The area is so beautiful and it is so satisfying to provide a place for families to gather. We clean it, we maintain it, we cherish it. It has become so dear to us because it brings families together! And.... they have a GREAT time!

What makes this lodge unique

By far, the best thing about Payne Lake Lodge is it's surrounding beauty. To stand on the deck and look out over Payne Lake with the sun going down behind the Rockies, to travel down the road towards the lodge and see Old Chief Mountain staring you majestically in the face, to actually see the star filled sky at nights, to hear the frogs singing, the coyotes yipping and best of all to see your family enjoying the beauty, the sounds, and the joy of just plain being together. It's simply the best.

GREAT propety especially for large groups

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this property from september 8-10 2017.

There were 14 guys and let me tell you we had a blast. The lodge is exactly as described and pictured with absolutely everything you could possibly need. We came to this property on the weekend that waterton was evacuated due to the wildfires and I must say that Cheryl Davidson the property manager was extremely professional in keeping me up to date with the wild fire situation right up to the day that we arrived. Cheryl always made me well aware of the smoke in the area and wanted to make sure that we were making and advised decision should we still decide to come, fortunately for us we did decide to still go and had an amazing time.(Too bad the fires were going as this place would be so beautiful surrounded by the mountains on a clear day!) This place sits on 160 acres of land and is in very close proximity to the lake and there are many fish to be caught there. I can't think of a better place to go if you want to be in the waterton area with a very large group and if you own dirtbikes and quads this would be absolute paradise. Thank you Cheryl for keeping us informed during this tough time for you and everyone else in the waterton area and we will be sure to return in the future for another wonderful stay.

Really quite wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Big reunion so we filled the place to capacity - 40 on the busiest night. Everyone had a place to sleep, every bed was fully supplied with sheets, blankets, etc. Beds comfortable. Kitchen fully stocked with the exception of a large coffee pot. Luckily we brought a 40 cup machine - would recommend they purchase one. If you have a big group do check if this has changed, otherwise you'll be making many pots. We brought large plastic glasses which came in handy as there wasn't a whole lot of large glasses/mugs for beer, etc. Location to P lake, Waterton is excellent. Kids walked 5-10 min down road to lake.

We all brought fold-up lawn chairs which came in VERY handy! Would absolutely insist you bring - they have plenty of hard fold up chairs (that you would find in a conference room), but the fabric lawn chairs much more comfortable.

Only slight criticism is that the list of activities outlined in discussions did not really pan out. No horseshoe pit (have to pound stakes into grass), no archery game (stuck in customs), no freebie golf set up, no volleyball set up. But otherwise place was really quite wonderful! Would definitely come back.

Thanks Cheryl and Soonhui, you are both very helpful and accommodating

Excellent Services, beautiful property, and lots of fun

  • 5 of 5

We had our family outing of 11 families, total 37 people. The place is very beautiful. Two ponds and one lake.

The lodge is huge and had enough beds. Lots of activities for kids e.g. boating, foosball

Cheryl was very nice and came to the lodge to make sure that we have everything, she helped us to carry the boat to the pond, got us some life jackets. Our whole group was very impressed with the services and the facility.

I think this is the best place to stay for a large group in Alberta and BC. It is close to the Waterton Lakes Park and also Payne lake is so good.

Payne Lake Lodge is located between two wonderful historic towns, Waterton National Park and Cardston and only twenty minutes from either town.

Waterton is a hiker's paradise with some of the world's most spectacular scenery. Enjoy boating, mountain biking, exploring nature and sight seeing. Elk, deer, mountain sheep, moose and bears are always a common attraction. There are trails for the novice hiker or advanced. There are magnificent mountains to climb and guides to take you if you wish. Peddle Bikes, Mountain Bikes, Surries and Scooter rentals are available at Pat's Garage and are a great way to see the Waterton scenery. Cross Country Skiing and Snow Shoeing are popular winter activities there.

Cardston has the historic Remington Carriage Center (voted Alberta's Best Attraction), Cobblestone Manor

(an amazing historical restaurant), LDS Temple and Visitors Center, Pioneer Card home as well as shopping conveniences, museums and restaurants. Cardston also is famous for it's wonderful live theater productions, a must see if you are in the area.

Payne Lake Lodge is nestled in a lovely treed area just 2 miles off the main highway. Quiet, private and surrounded with Mountains, lakes and hills. The town of Mountain View is only 3 miles away and has gas, convenience store items and camping amenities. Also nearby is Mountain Meadow Trail Rides, a wonderful horse riding adventure with amazing hosts Dan and Terry Nelson.

In the town of Hill Spring 10 miles north is the famous Great Canadian Barn Dance run by the talented Kunkle family. They offer a great country down home experience with dancing, entertainment and dinner.

Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump and the Famous Frank Slide on Turtle Mountain are only 45 miles from Mountain View.

This corner of Alberta is considered one of the best tourist attractions in Canada because there are just so many things to do within a short radius. A few other attractions are the historic Fort Mcleod and the Mounted Police musical ride, Writing On Stone Provincial Park filled with hoodoos and river beach fun. The city of Lethbridge 60 miles away offers great shopping and historical sites as well. Calgary is two hours North and has the famous Calgary Stampede.
