About this property

Holds Small Or Large Groups, Sleeps up to 40, 8 Bedrooms, Separate Basement Suit

Payne Lake Lodge (20 minutes east of Waterton National Park) is only 3 Km off the beaten path (highway number 5) yet perfectly sequestered in the hills just above the well know fisherman's Payne Lake. It sits on nearly a quarter section of treed land just waiting to be explored and enjoyed.

It is rare to find affordable accommodations big enough to house more than one family. That's why we are unique and one of a kind. We are typically rented by family reunion groups but we also rent to small families or groups to. . We also have a cabin that holds up to six to eight people that can be rented separately. You may look at it on Vrbo 697699 and even another large lodge 3 km down the road that sleeps another 20 persons Vrbo 722581 and is very lovely with great mountain views and right on the highway
A full lodge booking (all 8 bedrooms including basement) is $995.00 per night for up to 30 persons plus taxes. Extra persons are 20.00 per person per night plus taxes. (children 2 and under are free) All prices are before taxes. The cleaning fee is 250.00 plus tax. Though there is a cleaning fee our customers are still required to do a basic clean up before their departure. We provide a check list for this. At times we offer the lodge to rent by the room which is 250.00 per night for 4 people and 30.00 per extra person plus taxes. (This is offered on our off season only)
Priority is given to customers booking the full lodge and can be booked 2 years in advance. We have a minimum of two night booking.

We have 8 bedrooms with TWO large beds in each room as well as three futon couches, two extra double beds and one single bed in basement rec room. There are four bathrooms - one between every two bedrooms as well as a half bath. There is a lovely grand piano in the great room for musicians to enjoy. Our rec room has a full sized pool table, foosball table, t.v.s for DVD and video. Our fully equipped kitchen with two stoves, two fridges and another small kitchen in the basement makes handling large groups easy. There are multiple tables, chairs and sitting areas. There are five picnic tables on the deck with Gas BBQ and a fantastic view overlooking Payne Lake and the Mountains. There are two fire pits as well.
Most people rent this property because it is close to the famous and beautiful Waterton National Park but we have had customers tell us they loved just spending time at the lodge enjoying the the immediate area.
This lodge is set up to accommodate upwards of 40 people plus customers are allowed to bring R.V.'s and put up tents for a charge of 30.00 per unit per day plus tax.
Towels are provided, folded sheets sets are placed on each bed for your use, garbage bags, toilet paper, hand soap are also provided. There is a laundry area which can be used for two dollars per load and customer provides own detergent.
It is our goal to make you feel completely at home and comfortable. Families come back again and again because it is simply one of the best locations, best priced, most accommodating large group facilities in the area. And..... there is SO MUCH TO DO in this little corner of Alberta! You and your family will love Payne Lake Lodge.

Cheryl was awesome to deal with
We had an incredible experience at Payne Lake Lodge. The lodge was big enough for our family gathering. Cheryl was very attentive to our needs. She took care of stuff that required attention promptly. We ran into communication challenges exchanging and getting information via VRBO site but Cheryl and I manage to rectify the missing important details we required regarding arriving and entry to the property. Cheryl even offered her property for petting animals for my little nephews and nieces, weaving from their animal pets fur for both adults and kids alike and —— our experience with the wagon ride which we all enjoyed. She asked us to write our suggestions for minor stuff we noticed needs improvement. She was accommodating and delightful to deal with.

Perfect for large family
Our family of 34 stayed at the Lodge for a week and it was wonderful. There were plenty of comfortable beds and towels and the kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed to cook anything we wanted! We filled the 3 fridges with food for the week and had plenty of space. We used the bbq outside one night and it was great. I will be totally honest- if you are expecting the Marriott - this is not the Marriott. It’s a well loved and well used beautiful country lodge. We had wasps and mosquitoes and all the things you’d expect to find in the country. We even had a little bat sneak in somehow but he quickly flew out when we guided him towards the door. Cheryl was quick to respond and so helpful (and apologetic for the bat) None of the country critters spoiled our stay - We loved the view and the location was perfect for our family. So much space and grass area for little ones to play. We had wonderful weather but even if it was bad weather there was so much room inside we would have played games and still had a terrific time. I highly recommend this place and would love to come back again with our family. ❤️

Beautiful spot for a family reunion!
The location is beautiful, with gorgeous views of Payne Lake and the mountains. The lodge was perfect for our family reunion with a large kitchen, two fridges, plenty of outdoor seating and lots of folding chairs and tables if we needed extra. We enjoyed the games and rec equipment (volleyball, football, pool, etc) as well as the grand piano. We also appreciated the excellent customer service and communication provided by our hosts.

The lodge is an amazing panoramic view of sky and lake from the main living room.
We had so much fun visiting on the expansive deck and beuatiful living space with our guests that set up a music stage beside the grand piano. We did live mic and were entertained by our very talented guests. We played games in the back yard and even set up a slip and slide for the children. The hosts were very accommodating and even brought medicine for one of our guests rhat wasn't feeling well. Great hosts great views and great times. Love love loved it all. Our 31 anniversary couldn't have been spent in a better place. Thank u Cheryl.

Great place for a family getaway
The location is gorgeous, the pictures do not do it justice. Some parts of the property could use a little attention, which is the only reason why I did not give it a five star rating. One of the rooms was missing the screen door. It was essential to have the windows open, as the place gets very hot. Without the screen, you had to choose between heat or bugs. The deck is also in need of a few repairs. Nothing major, everybody had a great time. I would certainly recommend it to others.

Awesome Place
Visited this place in winter, Feb 16th 2020. The lodge is very spacious and clean. The owner was caring as she came to check in if we arrived safely. Nice lady to talk to. I am planning to visit this place once again in summer time with friends and family. I strongly recommend every body to look at this if they are planning for outing in this area.

Payne Lake Lodge is great for large groups!
So many things were wonderful about our stay at Payne Lake Lodge. The layout of the house was perfect for our group of 29. There were enough beds and baths for everyone. Plenty of towels and extra blankets. The eating space had plenty of tables and chairs, the deck had enough picnic tables for everyone. There was plenty of room to play out in the yard. We really enjoyed the piano. Two stoves/ovens was a huge help, as were the three refrigerators. The views were beautiful!! We really were very happy with our stay here. The only comments I can make are that not all of the beds were comfortable, some felt like they needed updating. Also, the kitchen was not very clean. We found many dirty dishes in the cabinets, and we had to boil the kitchen washcloths because they stank. However, we loved our time at the Lodge and would love to return for another reunion!!

Great place for a family reunion.
The Lodge is a bit rustic. I am VERY particular and came to realize that the fact that the place wasn’t spotless made for a more relaxing holiday with 16 children. The kids had an amazingly good time. I would book this again.

A perfect getaway for family reunion
Payne Lake Lodge was a perfect family retreat location. Everyone was comfortable staying in the lodge, which was well equipped with everything. The field outside was perfect for kids to run and play. Definitely will recommend this lodge to other groups looking for a place to accommodate family reunions with 20+ people. And I also want to commend the property manager. One of the fridges wasn’t working when we checked in and Cheryl had it replaced within a few hours. Cheryl was super helpful and readily available. Perfect vacation!

Perfect Family Reunion Location
This was the perfect spot for our family reunion! The views were gorgeous and the kids loved the huge field where they played all day. We loved all the picnic tables outside so we could send all the kids outside to eat. The many folding tables and chairs inside were extremely useful for any configuration that we would possibly need. The kitchen had so much counter space and was well stocked with all the supplies we could possibly need. The two fridges and deep freeze made it easy for us to organize all of our food for the reunion. The configuration of the rooms was perfect so each family was able to have two beds in each room and most rooms had their own sink with a shared bathroom with the adjacent room. I was surprised to find there were even more beds and futons that we could have used if we had needed. At the end of the trip, it was so wonderful to have several washers and dryers so multiple families could be doing laundry at the same time. Really our only wish would be for a larger sink so we could handwash the larger pots and pans easier.

Beautiful Views in our Mountain Escape
This is a beautiful piece of land with amazing views. The home sleeps 40 people which is a great find for a big family like ours. We enjoyed our stay. We did have a couple minor issues, but I was able to message the property manager and get them fixed right away. Like others have said, the properly could really benefit from a renovation and some updating, but for a family reunion it's a great place and was clean. The kitchen is very well stocked and it was easy to cook for 40 people. The location is very ideal, being so close to Waterton Park and Payne Lake. We enjoyed our stay.

Wet Cold Snowy May Long- weekend at Payne Lake Lodge
There is ample room, even when 20 people are forced to be mostly indoors because of inclement weather for a long weekend. We were warm and dry, well fed and adults, teens and young children alike could all find appropriate spaces. We appreciated the ample frig and freezer space. Cheryl is readily available by text which is helpful.

Host profile image
We are Eugene and Cheryl Davidsen and have managed Payne Lake Lodge for 13 years now. I (Cheryl) was born and raised here in southern Alberta and grew up in Mountain View. Payne Lake Lodge has an interesting story. It is owned by a wonderful Japanese lady named Yumi who still resides in Japan. She purchased the property back in the '90's when she came to visit Canada. In Japan she had met my nephew who was was on a two year LDS mission there. After his mission ended she requested to visit Canada. She fell in love with the land and was in awe at the wide open space of Alberta. She decided to purchase property and build a lodge. Though it took several years to complete, it has always been a spot for families to gather. As more and more people hear about the lodge it's booked many times two years in advance. But there are always spots for last minute bookings as well.

Why they chose this property

Families love this facility. It is in a private beautiful spot. You feel all to yourselves yet you are not that far away from the main stream. It seems to be in a perfect location only 20 minutes from several main attractions including- Waterton, Cardston, Great Canadian Barn Dance and even the U.S. border where the Glacier Parks are located. For families and friends to rent a large enough facility in Waterton, cost would be high. Many times you do not find a place that can keep everyone under one roof with a large enough room to all gather in. Imagine playing, singing and laughing to your hearts content. Imagine writing up an itinerary of amazing fun activities for your family event and only minutes away; hiking, biking, dancing, attending live theater, horse trail riding, ATVing, boating, swimming, fishing, old fashioned horse carriage rides and much much more. Imagine putting on programs in the lodge with a sound system for your entertainers in the family. Imagine doing treasure hunts, games, paint balling, water sliding; the ideas are endless for you and your family to have a hoot! We've had families bring in their own ATV's, their own play grounds, their own games, their own horses, even a train of carts pulled by a sit down lawn mower. Mini water slides can be made to slide down the hill right by the lodge. The field is big enough and flat enough to even have a great game of softball. In the winter you can skate on the pond and sled down the road. It's fantastically fun.
We have loved taking care of Payne Lake Lodge. The area is so beautiful and it is so satisfying to provide a place for families to gather. We clean it, we maintain it, we cherish it. It has become so dear to us because it brings families together! And.... they have a GREAT time!

What makes this property unique

By far, the best thing about Payne Lake Lodge is it's surrounding beauty. To stand on the deck and look out over Payne Lake with the sun going down behind the Rockies, to travel down the road towards the lodge and see Old Chief Mountain staring you majestically in the face, to actually see the star filled sky at nights, to hear the frogs singing, the coyotes yipping and best of all to see your family enjoying the beauty, the sounds, and the joy of just plain being together. It's simply the best.
