The StoneHouse at Prairiewood is a fully restored, fully modernized limestone estate. One of the most unique properties in the region, this was originally the Farmsted of Sam Kimble – one of the early settlers to the Manhattan area. With construction beginning in 1860, the hand-hewn timbers that roof this limestone complex were crafted before the Civil War! Today, the main house of this estate is available to rent for accommodations. Fully renovated in 2014, this property features unsurpassed elegance in its amenities, while celebrating the heritage of its past by leaving many of the original elements exposed: originally milled rafters, hand-hewn timbers, ancient limestone walls, wide-plank wood floors (with original square-head nails!), and antique walnut trim.
We fell in love with the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie when we each came to Manhattan to attend K-State. Now, some 20 years later after graduating from KSU, we have made the Flint Hills our home - and Prairiewood our labor of love. Together with our 3 children, we enjoy the charm of Manhattan living, KSU sports, and the great outdoors of this special place.

The dream and vision for Prairiewood began over 10 years ago. It all started with a simple vision for saving some of the native tallgrass prairie landscape in and around Manhattan, Kansas. Along the way, we became more and more compelled by the idea of using the prairie to provide a place where the values of the land can find their way into the hearts and souls of its visitors–a place where the senses are awakened, perspective is renewed, and imagination is inspired. We have worked diligently over the past five years to bring together all the pieces for such a place. We have acquired land surrounded by native prairie ecology, created exquisite accommodations and meeting space, blazed miles of walking trails, and assembled a staff of tremendous individuals. Now, after officially opening in January of 2010, the next chapter of our story is just beginning... Prairiewood is now a unique property set aside specifically as a prairie preserve to be offered for special events and uncommon lodging accomodations. Whether an individual seeking a place to rest and renew, a couple seeking a romantic get-away, a small friends group looking for a unique and inspiring place to meet, or a board-of-directors requiring a state-of-the-art meeting room, Prairiewood won't disappoint. From our first-class, carefully appointed accommodations to our world class guest service, everything at Prairiewood has been thoughtfully assembled to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
The StoneHouse is very versatile. It is intentionally intimate, unusually private, and thoroughly welcoming. While just next to town, there is feeling of being a million miles away. The prairie has a subtle yet profound beauty that tends to calm our nerves and inspire our dreams. We always feel refreshed after spending time there, whether waking the trails or sipping coffee in the sun room. We take great pleasure in sharing this very special place which we so love.
The celebration of our parent’s 50th anniversary was held in this Prairiewood home, a perfect venue for such an occasion. Both represent standing the test of time, aging gracefully with each other with each passing year. Thank you to the Prairiewood staff for making this the most memorable occasion. This was truly an unforgettable event.
My childhood friend and I were looking for some togetherness, some solitude, some quiet, some nature, and a place to rejuvenate before heading into an active 2015-16 work and family life. We found it in the StoneHouse! The house was impeccable, along with its historical quality and modern amenities. We loved all the tucked away corners both outside and in, as well as the large gathering spaces, including the comfy outdoor patio and relaxing hot tub. Canoeing up Wildcat Creek was a highlight. We liked having the full kitchen to bring our own breakfast and lunch, then going out to dinner where we had many choices. Hope to make it an annual event!
There is no better place in my mind to have a retreat than the StoneHouse in Manhattan, Kansas. Whether it be a retreat for something of substance or just time to connect with good friends, the atmosphere at The StoneHouse takes you back to a simpler time in a spot of such beauty and a house that is so graciously appointed and comfortable. Time on the patio around the fire pit or down by the natural spring pond or relaxing in the hot tub after a day hiking or golfing make for great memories and relaxation away from the bustle of our everyday life. It is a perfect spot to get away with good friends and each time we leave we are talking and dreaming about when we will be back. So often when I see pictures if a house to rent for time away, the actual place does not live up to the pictures and I am disappointed. This is not true if The StoneHouse. Everything in it is as it appears in the pictures. It is not only immaculately clean, the bedrooms and baths are luxurious. It is a step above places of its kind. If you chose to stay there you will not be disappointed. It is a five star plus in my book.
