Our newly-remodeled and extremely welcoming penthouse apartment, Aires de Barcelona, combines all of the modern conveniences with a unique design and a fabulous extra large (> 860 square feet) private terrace complete with fruit trees AND stunning views of the city and Montjuic. The apartment sleeps four: 2 bedrooms, one with a queen-size bed, and another with two full beds. This penthouse flat is a classic of brick and wood, typical rolling Catalonian style ceiling and access though a period elevator! (Please note that, this being the penthouse on a historic building, there is one flight of stairs between the elevator and the apartment that must be navigated by anyone staying at the property.) Something that any potential guest requiring full elevator service may want to keep in mind when considering a rental.) The penthouse's location, the barrio of Eixample, is characterized by long straight streets, a strict grid pattern crossed by wide avenues, and square blocks with chamfered corners (named illes in Catalan, manzanas con chaflán in Spanish). This was a visionary, pioneering design by Ildefons Cerdà, who considered traffic and transport along with sunlight and ventilation in coming up with his characteristic octagonal blocks, where the streets broaden at every intersection making for greater visibility, better ventilation and (today) some short-stay parking space. The grid pattern remains as a hallmark of Barcelona. The important needs of the inhabitants were incorporated into his plan, which called for markets, schools, hospitals every so many blocks. Today, most of the markets remain open in the spots they have been from the beginning. You will find something to suit every taste in this area, design and fashion shops, relaxing parks and a range of bars and cafes to have your morning coffee in. There are also a good number of restaurants, bars and discos for those looking for some of the nightlife Barcelona is so famous for. (World renowned TICKETS is 750 meters - a mere 8 minute walk- away!!!) In fact, there are so many tapas bars and restaurants in the vicinity of the penthouse - and in Eixample in general- that you will find it hard to decide where to have your meal! Likewise, you will find it difficult to resist the temptation to stop and try out the pastries and breads at the local bakeries located around every corner of this city's most welcoming neighborhood... :-)
Some parts of the Eixample were influenced by Modernista architects, chief among whom was Antoni Gaudí. His work in the Eixample includes the Casa Milà (nicknamed La Pedrera) and the Casa Batlló, both of which are on the wide Passeig de Gràcia, as well as the Sagrada Familia.
The apartment's location, right off the main city thoroughfare of Gran Via and within a few steps of the metro line, allows you to be at all of Barcelona's famous landmarks within the blink of an eye. The Sagrada Familia Basílica is, for example, only seven minutes - five metro stops - away. And famous Paseo de Gracia, where Casa Batlló and La Pedrera are located, is in the same barrio of Eixample as our property. The Paseo and Gaudí houses are thus only a three minute - or three metro stops - ride away! Plus Plaza España, Fira Barcelona, the new commercial center Arenas de Barcelona, Montjuïc, and its 'Magic Fountain' are just a ten minute walk (or one 1 minute metro) ride away!
