Our 'butterscotch' cottage is a peaceful hidden gem located in the heart of Asheville. Beautiful high ceilings and the original tall diamond-paned glass windows fill the historic 2-BR/1-Bath cottage with sunshine. Outside offers a lush evergreen private porch and patio. Driveway off-street parking space is tucked alongside the house in this safe and quiet neighborhood.

The house has new central heat and air, all new appliances, washer/dryer, side-by-side refrigerator, dishwasher, disposal, range, microwave, gas grill. There is outdoor lighting on the patio and exterior furniture for sitting or dining.

An historical 1911 cottage, it was once owned by the Thomas Wolfe family. The location is ideal for walking to downtown restaurants, grocery stores, night life, and shopping. Quiet brick sidewalks lined with honeysuckle and hollyhocks take you along a tranquil avenue to the vitality of Asheville’s cosmopolitan downtown – a 4-block walk -- see map in our photos.

While one is exploring the animated downtown another could play golf at the famous Victorian Grove Park Inn Golf Club less than 2 miles away– or fly fish in the idyllic mountain rivers within an hour’s drive.

We have greatly enjoyed sharing the open floor plan in the kitchen/dining/living area. The space is perfect for small dinner gatherings. We've loved sitting at the granite countertop sharing morning pastries from the nearby bakery.

There are two cheerful private bedrooms. The 'yellow' room has a queen-sized bed and the 'aqua' room has a daybed that makes into a king. Even the living room sofa makes into a double bed if needed.

Four to five people can easily gather around the heart of the house at the granite countertop for easy meals from Trader Joes or delivered from many top local restaurants by Valet Gourmet. But the grill and kitchen also allow you to cook for yourselves.

The completely private back patio has a gas grill. Sculptural barstools like those at the River Arts District make good perches for listening to birds while enjoying morning coffee or a cool drink in the shade at the outside bar.

Children are welcome and a dog will be considered.

The full kitchen is elegantly and functionally outfitted for enjoyment by our guests. There is a full bath with tub and shower. Mirrors in bedrooms allow a couple to share efficiently.

N. Lee St. Cottage

The N. Lee St. cottage in N. Asheville is an easy walk to downtown, stores, parks, restaurants, etc. I often went for walks around the neighborhood with my dog.

The cottage was exceptionally clean, well-appointed kitchen with extras, like spices and items that you would not normally find in many rentals. The beds were very comfortable and well-suited for your needs.

The small cottage would be an excellent rental for couples. The driveway is a tight fit and the owner mentioned that to me which tells me that the owners are upfront and honest. I had no problem with my crossover vehicle. I had one minor problem in the bathroom and they were quick to fix it. That says a lot about how they care about your stay.

For us, the area was quiet with hardly any street noise. A perfect inexpensive getaway, especially if you like downtown Asheville. Friendly pets are welcome.

Cozy cottage in a lovely city

Really enjoyed our first stay in Asheville in this cozy cottage on Lee Street North. The airy cottage was well-equipped, very clean, and within walking distance of the Thomas Wolfe House and downtown Asheville. Grocery stores were a mere 4-block walk away. It was great having our standard poodle join us this stay, too. The water and food bowls were especially welcoming and the pet-friendly hardwood floors were as charming as they were convenient. I've rated the cottage 4 stars instead of 5 ONLY because of the narrow driveway and back alley location. We drive a minivan and backing in and out was tricky for us some days. A smaller car(and perhaps better drivers)may be able to manage these manuevers with no trouble at all, however. The neighbors were very friendly and welcoming which made walking our pet comfortable at all times, day or night.

Best Location Hands Down

During our month stay my husband & I left our car parked in the driveway most of the time as the cottage is in the best neighborhood for proximity to downtown, the Grove Park Inn, neighborhood restaurants, a superb yoga studio, Whole Foods/Green Life & Trader Joes, coffee shops/juice bars, and more. We enjoyed the quiet, tree-filled neighborhood so much we are actively looking to buy a home there. The owners were quick to resolve issues, and the cottage has great privacy, a wonderful cross breeze when you open both the front & back doors, & strong internet signal even in the outdoor spaces.

I didn't want to leave!

I loved the little cottage in Asheville. It was super homey and a perfect place to call home for a month. I actually tried to extend my stay, but it was already booked. I hope to go back soon and stay there. I recommend the new Liberty Coffee shop, Elements Juice bar and Plant for local spots.

Butterscotch Cottage

This very clean small cottage that is great for a few people and is conveniently located just north to downtown Asheville, grocery stores , restaurants and shops. Many amenities you won't find in other rentals like tea and coffee, spices, extra towels, comfortable bedding, and lots of cookware, with a functional kitchen. The eating area consists of a breakfast bar for four people. You can watch TV while you eat. The outdoor space had a nice long deck with furniture as well as an enclosed side area for grilling. Driving in Asheville can be difficult at times, being a very hilly area and that is another reason why this cottage may be the ticket because you are a short distance from many activities and can walk to the downtown area via Central Ave.

The lot is very small but workable for small pets. As a large pet owner you can walk your dog to nearby green walkways and small UNC and forestry office experimental forest or take your pet to a restaurant café. The street is quiet with virtually no noise; Lee St. N. being more of a paved alleyway. If your not a pet owner, the cottage had no pet smell and was expertly cleaned when I arrived.

As far as attractions: I liked all of it, including the hiking and the fun people greeting you along the way. The hard part is leaving Asheville.

The Butterscotch Cottage was everything I had hoped it would be.

I spent a month in the Butterscotch Cottage in Asheville, NC and it was all I could have needed for an extended stay. The owners have thoughtfully provided items for everyday use and the cottage is light and airy and the proximity to downtown can't be beat. This was certainly a memorable stay and I would recommend this cottage to anyone wanting to visit Asheville.
