About Jay Chavez

Captain Jay Chavez pictured off the Island of Kauai on the Pride of Aloha. Jay and Diane are long time residents of the Big Island and have raised two Sons in Waimea. The Big Island is a great place to enjoy the outdoors.

Jay Chavez purchased this chateau / country house in 2009

Why Jay Chavez chose Kamuela

The peaceful location in the center of town offers so many advantages. The location is perfect for long walks, convenience to shops and restaurants and has a relaxing vibe.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Waimea has a lot of micro climates and the dry side of Waimea is often desired. It frequently rains daily which keeps the hillsides green but there is a magical quality about watching the sky at night when the sun sets. The view is why we fell in love with this unique home.

Simply Beautiful!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at The Captain's Quarters. It's close to wonderful restaurants, farmer's markets and several nice beaches. The view from the deck is very nice. The house was clean and the bedding was comfortable.

Lovely house, gracious hosts

  • 5 of 5

The Captain's Quarters is a lovely house, unique in architecture, well-equipped, clean, sooo comfortable, and very much enjoyed the paintings/artwork throughout. The hosts, Jay and Diane, were gracious and available for questions. Driveway is steep, but that one thing is offset by the all the wonderful aspects of our week's stay. Also delighted by the privacy of the house, but still close enough to walk to town for groceries or shopping. And close to Hapuna Beach! Fun place to stay! Very happy!

The Captain's Quarters, don't look any further!

  • 5 of 5

The owners, Jay and Diane, are very welcoming and friendly, they are wonderful people. Always ready to answer to your questions and very helpful in helping you finding the best place to visit on the big island. Captain Jay and skippers Diane and son are awesome sailors. We were able to spend 4 hours whale watching and able to do a little swim in the ocean.

This property, few minutes away from Waimea town, has a breathtaking view, is extremely clean and fully furnished house "in other words, a home away from home" but with a lot more to it. After our daily expeditions, we loved to sit down on the large deck and watch the sunset with our favorite drinks. In the morning, with a fresh Kona grinded coffee, the view on the Mauna Kea volcano and its observatory labs is simply magnificent and fills you energy. There's also lot's of bird singing, geiko visiting and the perfect temperature for us. Not too hot and cold enough at night to sleep like babies. Everything is close from this home away: (some of the nicest beaches +- 15 minutes; Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes +- 60 minutes; Hawi +- 45 minutes; Volcano National park +- 2 hours).

Don't let the steep hill impress you as after a couple of ride up and down, you'll easily become an expert. We had rented a Chevrolet Tahoe at first but found it was a little to big and went to change it the next day for an Armanda 8 passengers which was the perfect size for the parking lot.

We highly recommend this home away and everybody in our party loved it. If you are looking to visit the big Island, this is the place you'd want to stay. Don't look any further, this is it!

Now that we are back in our respective homes in Canada (Quebec & British Colombia) we have awesome memories of our 10 days stay in paradise.

Thank you Jay, Diane and son.

Wonderful home in Waimea

  • 4 of 5

The Captain's Quarters is a wonderful home with a lovely view. Clean and well appointed with all you need for a stay, and the owner is very helpful. Lovely walkout deck from the living room. We highly recommend it and just wish we could have stayed longer. Only very minor drawback is the driveway, which is quite steep and meets the street at a sharp angle, making it hard to navigate without the bottom of our car scraping against the ground (although with more practice this might have been avoided).

Beautiful home in the mountains of the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with the Big Island, and being up in the mountains away (but still a very short drive) from the beaches and the coast was a great way to experience the place. Jay and his family were great hosts, very helpful and responsive, and even devoting a lot of time to helping us with some car troubles we had! We have three small kids and while we definitely had to keep an eye on our 20-month old with the porch and the wood-burning stove, it was plenty of space for us and the whole family loved it.
