About Jay Chavez

Captain Jay Chavez pictured off the Island of Kauai on the Pride of Aloha. Jay and Diane are long time residents of the Big Island and have raised two Sons in Waimea. The Big Island is a great place to enjoy the outdoors.

Jay Chavez purchased this chateau / country house in 2009

Why Jay Chavez chose Kohala Coast

The peaceful location in the center of town offers so many advantages. The location is perfect for long walks, convenience to shops and restaurants and has a relaxing vibe.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Waimea has a lot of micro climates and the dry side of Waimea is often desired. It frequently rains daily which keeps the hillsides green but there is a magical quality about watching the sky at night when the sun sets. The view is why we fell in love with this unique home.

Lovely perch over Waimea

  • 5 of 5

We had a very pleasant stay at this A-frame home situated on a hill above Waimea with a lovely view out toward the ocean, Hualalai, and Maunakea. The house is very comfortable with many unique and personal touches, especially in the paintings. The kitchen is very well equipped. The lanai is marvelous, but if it's too cool or wet to sit out there then you have an equally good view from the main windows at the end of the A-frame, as seen in the VRBO photos. Yes, the driveway is *steep* -- take it slowly and you'll be fine. Waimea/Kamuela is a good base for visiting the beaches of the northern Kohala coast or for the beautiful over-mountain drive to/from Hawi on the north shore. And several restaurants in Waimea are better than many other places you'll find on the rest of the island. Enjoy! -- we did.

Very Nice Waimea Rental

  • 5 of 5

The Captain's Quarters is located on the "dry" side of Waimea, up in a pleasant, quiet neighborhood known as Nob Hill. Great views of Mauna Kea down to the Kohala coast. At about 2900', the evenings were always a pleasant temperature for sleeping and the daytime temps usually varied from cool mornings to warm afternoons. The house is spacious and comfortable and the kitchen quite well appointed for at home cooking and dining. Loved sitting on the deck for sundowners and grilling fish. Within good walking distance of Waimea Coffee and several great restaurants. A quick drive takes you to local farmers markets and some of the Kohala coast's best beaches. House comes equipped with sufficient beach chairs and boogie boards.

Owners Jay and Diane are very amenable and accommodating. We did overlap for a few days (while they were staying at their smaller "above garage" apartment uphill from the main rental house) but we never felt like this impinged upon our privacy.

Some reviewers have remarked upon the steep driveway, which is a rather common feature for many homes in this hilly area. Something we quickly grew accustomed to negotiating.

All in all, a very comfortable, well-located and well-priced accommodation for a visit to the Big Island.

Good, comfortable rental

  • 4 of 5

This rental is a good, quiet choice for those we want to stay in Waimea and enjoy its restaurants and cooler weather. The house is comfortable and provides lovely views of the surrounding hillside and, when the air is clear, the Kohala coastline. The only reason I rated the property with four stars instead of five is the driveway is steep and narrow. Although there is adequate parking on the street below, navigating the steep driveway on foot can be a bit difficult for seniors like me.

Quintessential Waimea Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time staying at the Captain's Quarters. The setting of an Aframe meets Waimea views was perfect. Whether we had a rainy night and woke up to make a fire in the stove or a beautiful morning with the birds singing, it was all very perfect for the Waimea experience. The beds are very comfortable, the kitchen is fully stocked and a joy to cook in. The owners are very acommodating as well. We highly recommend this lovely home for your stay in Waimea.

Kamuela visit to Captain's Quarters

  • 4 of 5

I was very pleased with the property which for us was in the perfect location. The view was spectacular! The home was quite nice. The driveway was a little tricky but worth the effort and parking on the street is always an option. I would definitely return to the home.

Thank you for this great opportunity to stay in the Captain's Quarters!
