Overview

About the property

Private Country Estate on 16 acres in California's Gold Country

Our private estate can host your family and friends for a vacation, a small conference, a celebration, or just a peaceful retreat. The home has beds for 16 people and 3.5 bathrooms. The master bedroom is a luxurious retreat, even featuring a claw foot tub! The home and property has plenty of room to spread out, while created to also come together around the kitchen and living area.

While our home is great for adults, we've tried to ensure we can also accommodate children. We have a pack & play as well as a small bassinet-type sleeper that will help parents of little ones feel right at home.

Our home also features a large great room (with half bath) downstairs that can be used for gathering together, dining, setting up tables for projects, and more! It can also be used for small conferences or yoga retreats. We have hosted groups of quilters and crafters, who enjoy the upstairs living areas, and are able to set up tables with their projects downstairs for weekends of crafting fun!

It has beautiful grounds that feature a seasonal creek, heritage oaks, and an Italian marble gazebo. The pastoral setting is wonderful for family photos or just quietly exploring. We enjoy walking the property, occasionally running into deer or raccoons, and watching the neighboring horses.

The California Foothills are fun year-round, and our estate is a central location for day trips to ski in the Sierras, go to the beach or San Francisco, hike in the Tahoe National Forest, visit the Wild and Scenic Yuba River, or learn about the history of gold mining while trying your own hand at striking it rich! Thanks for learning more about our home and area -- we hope to welcome you soon!

About The Owner

I love traveling and writing about my travels! I am a California native and love the beauty of the California Foothills, as well as sharing it with others.

The Owner purchased this farmhouse in 2005

Why The Owner chose Gold Country & High Sierra

I believe this is one of the loveliest areas in the state, and so many people have commented on the natural beauty of our estate in the Penn Valley area. It is a working vineyard, so you may see us occasionally out in the grapes or tending the garden, but you will have privacy during your stay in the Guesthouse.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Heritage oaks, beautiful pastures, and private areas to explore, the Rough & Ready Vineyard and Guesthouse is a unique, one-of-a-kind property, well-known in our community for it's beautiful setting and amenities!

Perfect Place for Family Birthday Celebration

  • 5 of 5

Our family gathered and spent a long weekend at this beautiful house--celebrating a family birthday. We're glad we discovered this peaceful vacation spot. We loved the morning walks around the property and vineyard (sampling the grapes since we were there at harvest time!). Much of our time was hanging out in the great room & kitchen area. Other favorite spots were the front porch and the deck. The cousins loved staying together in the "bunk room" that sleeps 4 in beds. We found this vacation rental secluded, yet close enough to town for morning coffee (Peets!) and eating out. One fun day trip was to the Yuba River near the old covered bridge. And another to historic Nevada City. But always anxious to get back to the house and just hang out. We can see how this would also be an amazing wedding spot...what a setting! We'd go back again, for sure!

Beautiful Private Estate

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed here as a family and came together for a wedding in the gazebo, followed by a lovely catered dinner in the chapel. It was a beautiful day and a restful weekend. I can't imagine a more perfect and peaceful place to spend time with loved ones and celebrate the beginning of life together. Thank you to the wonderful staff who ensured we had solid referrals to a great caterer, florist, and photographer, and made the preparations for us for tables and chairs as well as decor. The home was beautiful and comfortable, and provided every need. We hope to return next year for just a weeklong getaway with extended family to explore more of the area (we loved Bridgeport and swimming in the Yuba river!) and enjoy a restful week in the foothills. Many thanks!

Bridgeport on the Yuba River
Car: necessary

Bridgeport on the Yuba River is just 10 miles down the road and offers plenty of hiking and swimming opportunities.

The Penn Valley area offers some tasty treats in its cafe's and numerous secondhand stores for hunting down unique treasurers. There is a nearby grocery store (Holiday Market) and a number of restaurants for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Stroll along the streets of downtown Grass Valley with its eclectic mix restaurants, coffee houses, antique shops, and local businesses. Visit the Empire Mine, a California state park, to see what was one of the richest gold mines in the world! It is an adventure for all ages and a fun look back into the history of California's gold country.

Venture in downtown Nevada City for the quaint historic town tour. Many fine eateries line the streets of Nevada City as well as many as many great locally owned shops!

Centrally located, you can be skiing at Boreal and other Donner Summit area resorts in an hour, or exploring Lake Tahoe by driving just a bit further. Find a local fishing guide during summer to catch striped bass and king salmon on the Feather and Sacramento rivers. Old Town Sacramento is another great destination, only an hour away.
